How is someone not accepting that you exist/have the right to exist (not sure exactly how to interpret it since last I checked gay people aren't like Tinkerbell and saying I don't believe in homosexuals doesn't make them vanish) *not* extremely bigoted?

I don't know who he is but I think what he said is fine. He chooses to take on acting roles that reflect his beliefs. It's not as if he's an actor (I assume he's in a music group right?) so that would be his main focus. If he is an actor, well he can choose what job he wants.

Yeah, he sounds homophobic to me. Maybe not as homophobic as, say, my uncle who wants to "play shoot em' up with the gays" (gee that sure makes me feel safe at family gatherings AT HIS HOUSE ), but he sounds homophobic, none the less. He just sounds like the more civil type of homophobe (hahaha that sounds like an oxymoron).

Eh... I don't know who this person is, but if people are attacking him/giving him shit over that statement, I think they need to learn to live and let live. I've met a lot of Christians who don't like to acknowledge homosexuality, but they try to be respectful and low-key about it. It's STILL homophobic but at least they're not picking fights about it and only bring it up if people ask them a direct question about it (e.g. "So what are your views on homosexuality?"). You can call them out for it, but I don't think that belligerence is very likely at all to change anyone's thoughts, and it's not like they're hurting anyone by NOT stating their opinions unless directly asked. So why do it other than to feel all RIGHTEOUSLY ANGRY?

Siwon is homophobic. Is he awesome in other ways? Of course! However, that doesn't mean he isn't also bigoted. Not all bigots are ugly people with terrible personalities, and just because he's handsome and charming doesn't mean he's perfect.

Also, I hate the "he can't be homophobic, he's friends with Heechul/whatever other guy in Super Junior acts in a 'feminine' way." We don't know for a fact that Heechul is gay. These are Korean idols, and their personalities are mostly manufactured, not to mention that just because he acts in a stereotypically girly way doesn't mean he's gay.

2) in korea, they're worse about homosexuality than the us. (they still consider it a "disease") the christians there are more conservative than the us ones, if you can believe.

4) i've always felt that siwon was only giving a canned answer because he really seem to "acknowledge" people. that doesn't mean "oh he's bffs with ____, so that's clear proof that he's not homophobic!" i just figured, "it's a canned answer that he says to protect his ass from hurdles of his fellow christians."

Yes, Siwon comes from a culture that is far less tolerant of sexualities and lifestyles that deviate from anything heteronormative--but this does not erase the fact that what he is saying and has said is incredibly hurtful and problematic.

As a lesbian AND a Christian AND a k-pop fan (though not a Super Junior fan), I have to call it like I see it. What Siwon said is indeed homophobic. Though just because he was raised Christian doesn't mean that he has to be so bigoted (I'm an example of this). The dude doesn't acknowledge our existence. If that's not homophobic, I don't know what is anymore.
