I wouldn't agree with that because I myself am a Christian. Would anyone still be up in arms about his statement if he said it about Christians? It doesn't seem likely.

Well that's good to know. It just seems like to me a lot of people like to bash on conservatives/Christians. Though it seems that these responses are due to him saying he doesn't acknowledge 'the existence of homosexuals'. Which I find a bit odd.

I mainly have a problem with conservative christians because I see the damage they do. Some kids at my moms church through rocks at some gay prop 8 protesters. My uncle wants to kill all the gays. As a kid I went to one of the famed "jesus camps" where they literally try to brainwash you. My grandma thinks that natural disasters are gods wrath, and I know many who think that only gay people and sinners get aids, so they think that all of the children in Africa with aids are made up by the "liberal media"
I love when you all do things do that are good. Fundraisers for disaster victims, helping the homeless, that sort of thing.

tl;dr, my problem with christians is how some (hopefully the minority) handle it as a way to spread hate and bigotry.

Yeah, I don't understand that stuff. The Westboro Baptist guy gives Christians a bad name. He even came to our church and they started yelling at us. Why would he be yelling at fellow Christians? o_o;

I think a lot of people who don't study the Bible (Christians and non) assume that they can do what they want and are covered by grace and that God is on their side, and that justice is done etc etc. They seem to forget what Christ taught. He was just but he was also loving to his enemies. He even told Peter not to get revenge on the guards who were taking him to be arrested.

I don't understand how they can think that children in Africa with aids are made up. o_o; We have a relief fund for Haiti that we've been working with for years and we do a lot in our community too to help others and let them know about Christ. It's unfortunate thought that you've encountered those who give Christians a bad name, and I'm sorry for that.

Yeah, I know what you mean. My family always yells to read the bible, and I've read it 3 times (cover to cover) and no one in my family had even read it once. They think that because I'm an atheist I can know nothing about their religion when they refuse to read their own holy book. It makes me sad. I think that if they read it they could understand their own faith so much better. (i personally read it because I believe that it's important to understand what all faiths believe, and in the u.s, christianity comes up the most so it's important to understand it).

And thank you for that. I know not all christians are like that, but it sure is frustrating to have so many like this in one area.

Would you be interested in any Bible studies? That helps me a lot even though I've studied the Bible for years. I often get behind on the cultural significance and modern significance hehe.

I can't judge them since I don't know them but in the Bible it says you'll be known by the fruits of the spirit (by that it means the holy spirit, which if one believes that Christ lived and died for our sins, was resurrected, then they'll have Christ inside of them in the form of the holy spirit) and those fruits are love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. It's from Gal. 5:22-23.

I'm not perfect but through Christ I am made so. If your family members start getting mad at you or whatever, just kindly point them to that verse. And I mean kindly haha. Really, other Christians are suppose to chastise those in the church for being jerks, in a nice way. =)

And yes I agree it's important to know where one is coming from, so that's why I don't fly off the handle when someone disagrees with me.

Aw, that's sweet of you, but I think I'll pass c: I did a bunch of those as a kid and (younger) teen (i'm 18 now, and the last one I did was when I was 16, I think).

That's a nice verse, I've always liked that one. I think I'll tell them that one the next time they act unsavory.

Um, what on Earth? I'm a conservative Christian myself, but that is just... ridiculous. Seriously though, I think a lot of what you're referring to here isn't exactly Christianity, but just plain ignorance ((though yeah, the latter is very often disguised as the former.))

Yes, if he said he didn't acknowledge Christians it doesn't seem people here at F!S would be so up in arms about it because a lot of people here seem to be of the liberal etc branch where I am not.

I don't mind either way since that seems to be the norm but I just find it interesting that if it was on the other foot it doesn't seem people would say 'he's being Christian-phobic' etc. That's not a word I know hehe.

I think the difference here is that Christians are not a marginalised group - certainly not in the Western world anyway - so I'm not sure how relevant the comparison is.

Hmm yeah, that's true. But it certainly seems to be marginalized now a days. I say that because I have a degree in art so I was pretty much the minority and at school/work it doesn't seem very conservative-friendly. Which is funny since they like to complain they're the minority when in reality it's not true.

Yes. Yes, it is. 'The Church' is not officially in charge of anything but when the vast majority of our politicians are Christian and many are very open about how their religion influences their views, especially in the Republican party.

I think I'd have to disagree. Perhaps it is challenged more nowadays than it used to be, I don't know, but I still wouldn't call Christians a minority group.

I've never heard of anyone refusing to acknowledge Christians in the same way many refuse to acknowledge, or "don't believe in" homosexuality.

To my mind, conservatism is more of a belief set or ideology, whereas your sexuality is a part of who you are, the very core of you (so I think/have experienced). You can (usually) choose what you believe, but not choose who you are. So, perhaps when you say your workplace is not very conservative-friendly, maybe what your colleagues are reacting to is conservative ideology and "values", rather than who you, a conservative, are as a person. Which just takes me back to thinking that it's not sticking to or having beliefs that is a problem, it's specifically what those beliefs are - and whether they are offensive and/or hurtful to those around you.

Hm I don't think my beliefs and ideologies are hurtful in any way since whenever someone says 'Christians are stupid' or 'Republicans are dumb' - those are very broad responses to what I've heard over the years but I'm surprised how quickly people respond that way when it seems they don't bother getting to know said groups.

It's the same for conservatives lumping liberals in the same group, but I think that's dumb as well since it doesn't show a need to understand why.

What I was meaning earlier is that it doesn't seem I can express myself via Christianity (which is what I'd consider myself first) or a conservative (my second and lesser known view) because it's not popular and deemed as wrong; which I don't agree with. That and people don't seem to think of me as such because of how I look.

Where do you live? I've grown up in KS and it's surrounded with liberals, it's not a wholly red state as most believe.

If Christians seem to be marginalized in the arts, it's most likely because there's more acceptance of actual minorities. And if there's a lack of good will toward conservatives in those places, well, all you have to do is look at the news to see why.
