If it's the same fic I'm thinking of, I hardly blame you for it tainting your view of the pairing when half its fanbase lauded it as the best fic since sliced bread. Argh. Glad I stopped shipping it.

...I don't know that I'd call that fic out-and-out rape, per se (it's dub-con at most), but I didn't like that particular fic, either. Zuko is far too rough with her in it. He might try to assert himself with her, but he'd never intentionally hurt her, especially when he's trying to make nice with her friends.

Even for dub-con, it dances a little too close to the line for me. Partly because...yeah, Zuko would never take it to that degree. Especially in third season.

I find this to be a pattern in Zutara fics - the OOCness of the characters. I ship a lot of things and I have to say that I rarely enjoy Zutara fan fics. This fic was kind of awful. Zuko was...well I'm not even much of a Zuko fan and I think he deserves fic treatment better than this.

Yeah, that's half of why I stopped shipping it. A combination of the generally horrible fic (even when taking Sturgeon's Law into account) and the fanbase's tendency to be douchecanoes over the slightest little slight.

Yeah, there are a few of the "hailed as the best" fics out there that I'm just like: "Really? You think this is good?" I just tend to avoid Zutara fan fiction. The ship is kind of cool, but the fans are kind of scary.

Yeah. I read some of the stuff that keeps showing up on rec lists and wondered if they were even watching the same show.

I agree. The ship is okay, but the fanbase has left a rather bad taste in my mouth of late (to put it mildly).

I just stayed away for the most part but I saw snippits of it. The misogyny claims, Aang bashing, the Zuko-woobification, the character and relationship twisting, etc. I like my fanon without the side of canon-bashing and character-warping.

I'm pretty the reason that it's on people's rec list is because it was porn. It definitely caters to a certain kind of kink, regardless of whether or not it was OOC. (I do agree about it being "too close to the line", as you had mentioned from above.)

I still sorta ship Z/K myself but I moved away from the fandom after I couldn't handle being swept up in post-finale madness. It stressed me out, lol. Plus, my interests/outlook eventually changed so it's a back-burner pairing I go to when I'm feeling reminiscent~ or something.

Firstly- douchecanoes = best word EVER. Love it. A lot.

Secondly- Funnily enough, I was originally a Aang/Katara shipper, but I joined a SERIOUSLY hostile forum that was very ZUTARA MUST DIE, so I pretended to ship Zutara to piss them off, them I actually shipped it. I found a couple grounded, mature fans of the ship and stuck with them. A lot of the other fans are definitely a bit...overzealous. Heh.

Yeah. I skimmed about half of it before my half-digested lunch started scrambling for an exit.

I stopped shipping it due to the fanbase. JFC. I'm still ashamed I was ever one of them because ho-lee shite, the crazy. But the generally godsawful fic didn't help.

The simple explanation? Like most fic for widely-beloved ships, Zutara fanfic doesn't need to be all that great to get praise because the ship is so ricockulously popular and the fanbase is not exactly discriminating. Slap anything together with that ship, and you'll get your gushing reviews and instant gratification. Fic for other ships needs to be good if the author wants people to even read it, nevermind be inspired to leave some feedback.

It seems that anything that shows Zuko and Katara can be together (even if it is horribly OOC and makes no sense) is a winner in the fans' eyes. I always got the feeling that despite protestations to the contrary, "being canon" was extremely important. So important that every character, every rival ship, and every situation was twisted beyond belief.

I lost interest when I realized I was perfectly happy with them just being friends.

I've actually told people, if they want to get noticed, write Zutara. Don't bother to make it "good", because it won't even matter. Then I showed them the 1,000+ reviews "Stormbenders" has on ff.net, and dared them to find fic for another A:TLA pairing that even came close to getting that kind of acclaim (regardless of quality).

But in defense of Zutara fic, Kataang is half as popular, but the fics are just as bad.

You know, we get it. You don't ship it anymore, you hate the pairing like the fire of a thousand suns. But you keep generalizing about the shippers being batshit, and...really, it's only a handful of Z/K shippers that are that bad; the rest of us kind of just hang out in our own little corner and write/read/look at fanart.

I know you know this, too, because you knew some of the worst offenders and had them in your comm. So why do you keep denigrating the fans as a whole? It's kind of hurtful to hear you're "ashamed you were ever one" of the fanbase.

I don't deny that some Z/K shippers are over the top, but I don't let that ruin my fandom experience. It is what you make of it. *shrug*
