I don't think being in Ravenclaw is necessarily about natural smarts. It's about how you approach things.

[identity profile] jessieheart.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think wanting to learn is enough to get you sorted into Ravenclaw. Sure, you'd spend some time stuck outside the Ravenclaw common room trying to sort out the riddles, but you'd become more clever for it, and I think you'd make the house proud.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
yeah sometimes i feel this way, but gilderoy lockheart was dumb as hell and he still got to be a ravenclaw! SO WE'RE OKAY!

also remember what harry says at the end lol-- you can basically choose your house anyway.

See, I think I'd probably be sorted into Ravenclaw, but secretly hope for being Gryffindor.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you need to be smart to be in Ravenclaw. Imo, Ravenclaw attracts people who enjoy learning, thinking about the meaning of life and things like that.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
no

not "here"

there is no "here", Ravenclaw does not exist, Hogwarts does not exist

earth to OP, please stop evaluating your self-worth based on fictional shit

I think being Ravenclaw is not just about intelligence...it's about a thirst for knowledge, for wanting to learn and know and discuss things.

[identity profile] tenonthedot.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I identify myself as a Slytherin but I'm not going to try to trick or murder people.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of the time I went to a HP midnight showing and all the high school kids dressed up as Ravenclaws. Not gonna lie, it made me smirk a bit.

BUT SERIOUSLY THOUGH, IT'S ABOUT CHOICE. JUST TALK TO THE SORTING HAT and wait it's not real. Shit, that's depressing.

Anyone else feel super dumb for not getting the riddle to enter the common room in HP7? I mean, maybe they made it harder cause it was McG and she's better than everyone, but still. I was like, '..Oh.'

Either way, I feel you, OP. So I never know what house I should belong to.

Eh, it's not just about IQ, I don't think, it's about intellectual curiosity and general bookishness. At least I think so.

[identity profile] violent-aki.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, what brilliant comments! I feel the same, OP. As a kid I just went with Gryffindor because it was the ~main house. As I got older, I wanted to be Ravenclaw, but didn't think I was smart enough, so I started thinking maybe I was a Hufflepuff. But in the end, Ravenclaw won out, and I think the above commenters make some good points - it's about where you want to be and where you think you'll be most comfortable. Ravenclaw pride!

(Sucks that our colors and mascot got all mucked up in the movies, though...)

I used to think that since I used my brains to do stupid things like ponder the nature of magical sentient runes and figure out how video game mechanics would translate into a plausible world, I probably wasn't Ravenclaw material.

Then Luna came along, and I decided... yeah, I guess as long as you've got a certain kind of scientific curiosity and willingness to explore, maybe it doesn't matter so much what you're curious about and willing to explore. XD I think it's more an interest in having and pursuing knowledge than already having it, or having a natural inclination to be book-smart.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with all these comments. When I read your secret, I was amused because I think it's the opposite for me. I'm probably smart enough to be a Ravenclaw (logical mind, puzzle-solving skills, straight A student, and all that) but I've never identified with Ravenclaw because I would not call myself inquisitive or bookish and in general don't aspire to be a Ravenclaw. I think it's about what you value and what you cherish. I don't cherish the traits of curiosity and being a bookworm, and I don't find my intellectual abilities a large/important part of my identity. You strive to be a Ravenclaw, though, and so I think that's where you belong. For me, I think I'd be happier in Hufflepuff.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I thought being a Ravenclaw was about a thirst for knowledge, not about being super smart.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
But that was the whole point of the House sorting: that whichever house you most want to be in is the one that's right for you. Remember Dumbledore's line? After Harry confesses to him in Chamber of Secrets that he was almost sorted into Slytherin, and was only placed in Gryffindor because he'd asked to be, Dumbledore replies with something like, "Well, yes. And that choice reflects that what you most value is bravery. House sorting is based on values, not on abilities." Implication being that anyone who *wants* to be in Ravenclaw belongs there, because the trait that defines Ravenclaws isn't that they're clever or wise. It's that they *value* cleverness and wisdom.

Don't even worry about it.

Gryffindor: Insufferable self-righteous bullies
Ravenclaw: Humorless aspie egomaniacs
Hufflepuff: Passive-aggressive loser cowards
Slytherin: Evil

I'M NOT MAD I DIDN'T GET MY HOGWARTS LETTER

[identity profile] jewelia13.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
No worries, OP. I was dismissed from university after two years (more due to my own laziness than anything else) - I can still read about eight 300+ paged books within ten days, regularly hand my boyfriend's ass to him in terms of Jeopardy and technology (and he has a Master's and a BA), and have a vocabulary/writing level higher than the majority of people my age (actually tested as gifted or near-gifted a few times). /littlebitofindulgentbackpatting'scuseme /coolstorysis

Of course, I also tend to be insufferable, long-winded and a bit condescending (could you tell? *eyeroll/facepalm* Sorry).

I usually test as Ravenclaw > Hufflepuff > Gryffindor > Slytherin (and self identify as a Slytherclaw), make of that what you will!

Something to cheer you up. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0Z5_wipT2o)

It always seemed to me that where you're sorted doesn't depend on what you are, it depends on what you value.

That's okay. Hermione's smart as hell but she's not in that house. It's not about BEING smart, it's about what you think is really important (Luna might not come off so bright, but she's inquisitive and believes in mysteries that other people dismiss and like...lives to explore shit, just to learn about it. You know what I mean? She's Ravenclaw all over.)

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to be a Gryffindor, but I don't think I'm brave enough to be there... I feel your pain. :(

Ravenclaw is more about curiosity, desire to learn, and so on than actual intelligence. I always ascribed creativity and open-mindedness to it as well, because Luna.

You sound like you'd be a fine Ravenclaw, really.

Harry Potter sorting woes are kind of hilarious to me, probably because I've overwhelmingly tested for Slytherin and I like to joke that every time some evil plotting was afoot I'd be that kid in the back going WAIT I THOUGHT WE WERE GETTING PIE?!

[identity profile] sociopsychotic.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
After being a Harry Potter fan for 10 years, I am still not sure where I would be sorted, so I've decided that I would just ask the Sorting Hat to place me in the same house as my best friend who is older than me and would already be placed somewhere.
