My friends and I mock shit we don't like all the time. If they were doing it in private, it's really none of your business. And unless they acted nice to your face while they were mean in private, it wasn't behind your back, it was just private.

And I don't think them not saying it to your face was a lack of bravery, they probably just didn't feel the need to break your fragile little heart, since private mocking amongst friends is done for fun rather than drama.

I don't doubt there are people who snark my stuff in private either. It just doesn't bother me and I'll never see it unless they bring it to my attention to start drama.

Oh, and before anyone self-righteously replies that they never have because they're a 'good person' or some bull, note that watching a shitty movie with friends to laugh about it is the same. If you see nothing wrong with laughing over shitty movies or tv shows but think it makes someone "creepy, immature and insane" to laugh over bad fanfic, you're probably projecting insecurity.

Ha, an anonymous conversation posted online that can be (if not readily) accessed by others including the subject? Doesn't sound so private to me, even by the screwy standards of privacy we go by on the Internet. That's more like the usual "I want to talk shit but I don't want to put my name on it" dealSticking to a single topic for months at a time doesn't strike me as merely a bout of playful snarking either, especially not if it also veers into personal insults. OP never specified where the criticism was posted. It could have been behind someone's flock. So if OP dug their way into it, then no, it wasn't meant for them to see, and it's on OP for snicking their nose where it didn't belong.

I find that unlikely. For one thing, if this is LJ (and it seems to be), generally the only time people feel the need to go anon is in a public space, be it a meme or a community like FS. Would you go anon on a private friends-locked journal? "A group of anonymous" seems to suggest an anonmeme, in which case there is hope that at least some of them are trolls.

Not surprised by snarking, but it can still hurt, especially if anons get really vicious. Personally, I go to some anon memes (from roleplaying, not fanfiction, but the point still stands) because sometimes there's good, fun discussion, and on rare occasion there's even good criticism from people who don't feel comfortable for one reason or another approaching a player on their HMD. There are other reasons to go to an anon meme besides wanting to participate in wank.

Look, I know the internet is a public place (hence my comment) and posting your work in a public place opens it up for criticism. I'm not arguing that, and I'm not really interested in getting into the completely subjective and often-pointless internet criticism etiquette argument.

I find it highly unlikely OP somehow hacked into a series of flocked snark entries, and if it was flocked why on earth would the commenters be anon? It seems likely from the description that it was some kind of anon meme. Which is public so anonymous people can post in it.
