That's what I've been thinking, too; the kogal look, the ganguro look and all these alternative fashion styles was really seen as empowering of Japanese teens/women, because they were rebelling against the standard ideas of femininity and rejecting them. It's taking it to an extreme to make a point.

I don't think ganguro is necessarily attractive, but the history of trends like kogal/ganguro is actually quite interesting.

But when you say that, couldn't you also say that of guido fashion, taken from an objective standpoint? It's pretty out of line with the traditional Western view of beauty, and if you take into account that most of the kids on Jersey Shore (and who follow that fashion trend, trust me, I'm from Rhode Island) aren't from New Jersey, can't you say that they're trying for the same affect? Maybe guidettes are the great fashion rebellion in the US.

I'm not saying that it couldn't be, but I'm not quite sure of the history surrounding this. I'm trying to search the internet for anything about this but I can't find anything.

It COULD be a fashion rebellion, but most of the things that I've seen aren't necessarily directly contradicting fashion trends. It's out of line from the traditional view of beauty, yes, but I don't think any of the individual elements directly contradict it. For example, it is fashionable to have a tan and not be too pale; guido fashion seems to just take that too far.

I just now that from my reading that these styles in Japan were a direct rebellion, and I'd actually be very interested to read anything about this, actually.

I wasn't serious about that.

But the thing is that it sounds, from what I've seen, that the idea that ganguro is a rebellion was just a retroactive justification for some really horrible fashion choices. Your explanation makes it just a bit worse for me, because originally I thought it was just a bit of ludicrous fun and now that I know it's apparently post-modern it's sort of spoiled for me.

lol, OK, I just wanted to take your post seriously; I try to keep an open mind about that sort of thing.

Sorry for making it worse for you; it COULD be retroactive justification, especially since ganguro came after the style that really was the main rebellion which was the kogal style. I mean, at this point it's hard to know what the first people who did it were really thinking. This is just what I've heard, and I just think it's fascinating.

This is coming from someone who did NOT see the appeal in kogal/ganguro styles at all, thought it was really ugly, and then read further into it.

Which is not to say that I hate all fashion that is against the mainstream standard of beauty (http://www.nappturality.com/). But if you can't tell difference between natural hair and ganguro fashion, then...well, what can I say.

Ganguro fashion is different, yes, but it's also okay. I'm not saying you should like it if it's not to your taste. I'm not that much of a fan of it myself. But we, as a society, need to get over the idea that it's okay to judge someone based on their looks and style choices, whatever those may be.

Appearance is the first point of contact with real-life people, and how we craft our appearances communicates a lot about us. Someone who goes to the grocery store in a nice skirt and blouse is presenting a very different look from someone who goes in their pajamas, and thus communicating something about themselves. And if a third person goes to the store looking like they haven't groomed themselves in a year, that's another message, and you've probably got decent odds that your judgment to avoid that person is correct.

Everybody makes judgments based on appearance and that is not, in and of itself, a bad thing. It's what you do after you've made that snap judgment-- whether you let a superficial judgment affect a personality judgment forever after-- that's more important, I think.
