It is totally normal to feel that way, OP. That's my problem with RPF too. The idea of how I'd feel if it were me. It's one thing to maybe write a little fluffy piece (heck, even a sexual fantasy with your celeb of choice) but writng graphic, horrid events happening to them? I do think that crosses a line.

You're okay to feel how you do. I am sorry you had to go through that.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I've wondered about the difference between writing fluffy rpf and angst/graphic/horrible rpf.
Because on a personal level, I have had a bit of fluffy fic written about me and found it amusing. I think there are types of fic I would not find amusing.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you completely turned me off RPF. Sorry that you had to go through that, I would be terrified.

[identity profile] princesoup.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
is "RPF" where people write shit about real people

because that's fucking weird and creepy and people NEED TO SERIOUSLY STOP BECAUSE THOSE ARE REAL PEOPLE THEY'RE WRITING ABOUT keep your delusions inside your head ok

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's eal person fiction yes - though it's usually about celebs, not your friends. So this is a whole new level of creepy.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
In my fandom, it's generally agreed upon that they're not real people. They're fictional representations, caricatures. Celebrity X said in one interview that she liked strawberry milkshakes once in a while, so in fanfic, she gets the shakes if there's not one within arms reach at all times. In real life, Celebrity Y is an actor on a popular TV show, but in fanfic, he's a dogcatcher in a small town.

We know we're not writing about real people, because we don't KNOW those real people. We only know the celebrity side that they project, which more often than not is NOT how the person actually is, so we take that projection and run with it. YES, the fictional character has the same name, and YES, he looks exactly like the celebrity, and YES all his friends and family are there, but it's not THEM.

Normally, it's about celebrities, not people you know. Some readers/writers say that the celebrities in RPF are "representations", rather than the actual people.

RPF gets a really bad rap because it's created by fans of the celebrities and fans inevitably include nutsos. However, when you think about it, this sort of thing occurs all over the media and in literature constantly. It's just normally used in parodies. Historical fiction is RPF. Photo manips of celebrities are in the same vein, as are much of skit shows like MAD TV and SNL. A great deal of satire involves poorly disguised or blatant caricatures of politicians and celebrities.

You should also know that many RPF writers frown on fans sending copies of their work to celebrities. They don't want the celebrities to know that they do this.

I completely agree, OP. Especially when it's shown to the celebs in question. Think what you want in the privacy of your own head, but please don't wave it in front of the innocent celebrities who are just trying to do their job and interact with their fans. It's creepy.

*shudder* Believe it or not, this is the first impediment that comes to mind whenever I imagine what it would be like to be famous.

I can't even have a little silly dream about becoming a singer/actress/whatever without my brain pointing out that people could one day have total access to all my life and pictures and that they could write things I could never unsee about myself.

It never fails to kill my imagination.

shows how my brain works

RPF is a scary, creepy thing...

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a whole new level of creepy - to actually have someone you know do that!

But yeah, this is basically why RPF rubs me the wrong way in general.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is exactly why I find RPF creepy, and I'm more than a little wary of people who write it. Sorry that happened to you OP =/

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I can empathize with you on this, I've had RPF written about me also. It was ages ago though, and on a pretty small forum. There was one person that I was particularly close to and we would sometimes collaborate on fics... One day when I logged on they had publicly posted a smutfic involving me and another member. I NEVER contacted them again... RPF is just WAY too creepy.

story time!!!

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
omg
so this guy used to have a crush on my friend, right
um somehow she ended up reading this... story that he wrote about her

in the story she was a bounty hunter in space like samus aran
and basically this monster ate her in a really sexual way?

TL;DR DON'T WRITE VORE ABOUT REAL PEOPLE
or any creepy rapey stuff or whatever i mean jesus

Oh my fucking god...a friend wrote a rapefic about you?! That is some seriously messed up shit right there. I wouldn't be able to dump that friend fast enough. D:

It gives me SUCH a case of secondary embarrassment when people talk about/show their fics to the celebs they wrote about. I knew this chick once who went to a con with, like, a PHYSICAL FOLDER FILL OF FICS that she GAVE to this actor during an autograph signing. And then for literally the next 6 months it was all she could talk about and how happy she was going to be when she inevitably got a letter from him gushing about how awesome her fic was. HAHA he never sent her a damn thing. He probably never read her crap. She waxed dramatic on livejournal for a loooong time about unfair it all was. Every time she posted I just laughed to myself. Pathetic. Not to mention creep-tastic.

I'm sorry your ex friend did such a shitty thing to you, OP. I hope for your sake you never have to deal with them again.

And I agree that people who actually send their shitty fanfics to RL celebrities are pretty damn pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
O_O That's horrible! Poor OP...

RPF creeps the heck out of me as well. Actually, a LOT of aspects of celebrity fandom do but when you're publicly sharing your sexual fantasies - ESPECIALLY horrible kinky ones like that - that's creepy on a whole new level.

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
RPF is really fucking creepy. People tend to forget that who they're writing about are real people and not some doll in a playhouse.

That is fucking terrifying. o_o I don't see anything wrong with sort of shipping real people, like thinking "oh they'd be super cute together, I hope it happens", but writing actual fic about their lives creeps me out like hell. I'm SO sorry you experienced that first hand, that would be traumatizing. :S

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think RPF is kinda creepy. I am not super-bothered by people writing about huge celebrities as caricatures as discussed above (or personas that use an actor's real name but are essentially characters), but beyond that I really hate it. They're real people and they deserve respect.

Part of me wants to believe that G.Way actually wrote this secret. Because...yeah.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's truly awful, Anon. I guess my only point would be that when it's being written by a creeper like your ex-friend, yep, RPF can definitely be super creepy. But most people who write RPF are pretty normal and mostly well-adjusted and have a fair grasp on reality, and that tends to be reflected in their writing.

Basically, creepy people make everything creepier when they get their hands on it. Judging all RPF and RPF writers because of the creeps is not entirely fair (although it is understandable.)

lol RPF haters

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That none of you can draw a line between fans writing fiction for their own amusement and letgit stalking is more troublesome to me than all the writers combined.

[identity profile] zoo-baby.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very sorry you had that happen to you, anon. I can't imagine how awful you must feel. I've written a bit of RPF about my friends before, shipping them with their favorite celebrities, but it was a joke and they consented to it. And I would never want to write RPF about anyone that was like super smutty or really violent/disturbing... That crosses a whole new level of creepy.

Personally I don't have that much of a problem with it as long as it doesn't cross certain boundaries, but I do think it should be kept somewhat on the DL, and NEVER EVER EVER show it to the celebrities in question. Dear god.

[identity profile] oaktree89.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Firstly, I want to say that I'm so sorry you went through this, OP. It's incredibly fucked up that your friend a) wrote that and b) chose to show it to you (wtf??), and no one should have to experience that.

That said, although I'm not much of a fan of RPF, I respect people's right to write it. I think with the exception of crazy tinhatters, people understand and agree that they're writing about fictional representations of celebrities' public personas. These are people who have chosen to live in the public eye. This doesn't mean they don't have feelings or rights, or that they should be shown RPF about them (EVER, oh my god why do people do that), but I think a certain amount of speculation and gossip and RPF is going to come with the territory of being famous.

I don't have a problem with RPF so long as it remains secluded on the internet for the most part, and people understand that it's about (as I said above) fictional representations of celebrities' public personas.
