I like fanon!Teyla more than I ever liked canon!Teyla. I agree with you, she seemed condescending, and I thought the writers didn't give her enough flaws *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think that most of the main cast didn't have any flaws. The only flawed person was McKay really. Otherwise everyone was written as perfect and they were never called out on their mistakes.

That's why I like the fanon versions more.
veracity: (SGA - Teyla)

...McKay was the only flawed character? Seriously? He who pretty much dominated everything because he was the production staff's wish-fulfillment? McKay was catered to and babied throughout the whole show. He was always the character that got what he wanted, except in Trinity.

I'd say Elizabeth was the most flawed since the military did nothing but undermine her authority, just cause, and leave her to clean it up.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
McKay was also incredibly bad with social interactions, over-confident, hypochondriac, arrogant as all get out

So yes. McKay had some incredible flaws as a character, that particularly stood out when compared to the other characters [who also had flaws, just more subtle ones] - he also had some amazing strengths

His overconfidence got the team in a lot of trouble, like Sheppard. It's a definite flaw in both. Yes, it saved them, but it also put them in danger. Not to mention the constant whining and wheedling.

His stood out the most because he was the main focus for a large portion of the episodes, especially as time went on.

McKay was also the only character who was properly called out on his mistake, he's an asshole, really bad with people, he's condescending, sexist, whiner and a jerk. He was a main character (along with Sheppard), that's why there was so much focus on him. Sheppard and McKay pretty much had split the focus mostly 50/50.

He really wasn't catered and babied throughout the whole show. I know people who don't like him tend to forget this, but he was constantly the butt of the jokes. Constantly. Something bad kept on happening all the time and with the exception of few things (like second childhood, or the ascension machine but that only at the end) all of them were played out for laughs. So...yeah. I don't know where you see the babying.

OH. The relationship with Keller I guess. I didn't like that part much myself, because it turned McKay into not entertaining character and I guess the producers had a thing for Jewel in leather, but that's all I can think of.

But if you seriously think that Elizabeth (of all people...she really didn't have many prominent flaws - that someone undermines her authority is not her flaw because it's external force not internal) is portrayed as more flawed than McKay...yeah. Even Sheppard has more flaws than her and that's saying something. I don't know. I think you have hater goggles on too tightly.

I'd like to know how many times did McKay's overconfidencet's get them in trouble (other than himself alone - like with the ascension machine)? Except Doranda...do you know? I'm not being condescending or angry right know, I just don't remember. Because he mostly delivered on what he said.

veracity: (SGA - Teyla)

[personal profile] veracity 2011-08-05 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Condescending to the people managed to wake up the worst enemy possible, had her people killed and/or eaten because she had the audacity to help the newbs within a day, and then was systematically ignored or treated as the enemy when trying to explain the galaxy's delicate balance now that the entire race of beings that thought humans were the best nutrition source ever?

Yeah...I can see that. Except not at all.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you so defensive over this? Btw, I suspect this exact type of behavior is why the OP feels they can't say 'I don't like Teyla' anywhere but a secret.
veracity: (Default)

[personal profile] veracity 2011-08-05 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Because she was called condescending without any sort of support. Added to it, the girls are typically not loved within the fandom in favor of the boys.
popkin16: (☂ here comes trouble)

[personal profile] popkin16 2011-08-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. You feel very strongly about this, don't you? Forgive me for expressing my opinion. I mistakenly thought his was a public place where we could say how we feel.

Also? Her people were being fed on long before people from Earth showed up. The wraith were woke trying to save her and her people. Next time, Sheppard and people from Earth should let everyone just die. Oh wait, then you'd be jumping down everyone's throat on how cruel they are.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I always had a fondness for her.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've always been very... idk, like meh with Teyla. I think she grew on me, though.

[identity profile] irony-rocks.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
She was condescending? You mean against a group of people that came into her home galaxy and, put simply, fucked things up? I love Shep, Weir and McKay as much as the next person over, but you have to admit they kinda screwed her galaxy over, and the most condescending attitude I honestly saw of her during the first few seasons was a raised eyebrow and some reasoned argument. She distanced herself at first and had moral qualms, and that may have translated into a holier-than-thou attitude to some, but I don't think that was it at all. She had an opinion different than others and voiced it, as a leader should - and she was a leader.

I don't know - I just think Teyla rocked and got a bum rap from fandom, so often overlooked for her many admirable qualities.

[identity profile] caffeinefreeddp.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I loved her, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't dislike her but I don't really care for her either. I just... I don't know but I could never be interested in her. She's there and that's nice but she never earns more than a glance from me.

Which I'll admit is a lot better than me hating her but I think there was a lot of lost potential there.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
She's my favorite female character in Stargate, probably second only to Aeryn Sun in fandom as a whole. She's just cool!

[identity profile] babybeluga2003.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you don't have to like her. I love Teyla, but I don't like Elizabeth. Apparently that's a sin too.

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on where you hang out. The crowd I hang out with most of the time can't stand Elizabeth either. :D I think as long as you ignore the Sheppard/Weir corner of the fandom you're in the clear. :D

[identity profile] babybeluga2003.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that's hard, because I'm mostly into SGA and its fandom because of Sheppard (and McKay but that's unrelated).

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-08-05 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in the fandom for Sheppard and McKay too. So I mostly hang out with Sheppard/McKay shippers and GEN writers...and most of those I met don't like Weir too much. But I guess it really depends in which corner of the internet you are, haha.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Here we go, more rival-ship-fueled bashing of Weir and Sheppard/Weir. *rolleyes*

(Anonymous) 2011-08-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Or it's maybe that those who prefer to avoid Weir fans are just tired of their bashing of other characters (like Teyla and McKay)?

I know I am. Her fans made me hate her.

Meh. Personally I found her bland, tbh, which made me sad because I adore Rachel - but sometimes you just run across a character that, for whatever reason, just doesn't interest you.

[identity profile] dragonladyk.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if this helps/is what you mean, OP, but pretending to like a character and liking a character in spite of flaws the rest of the character's fandom is Hell-bent for leather on ignoring are not the same things.

*is a Snape fangirl who cannot stand the leather pantsing of one of her favorite assholes*
