TBH, the love of Narcissa for her son is the only portrayal of this particular emotion in the whole series that I found believable. Probably a case of telling vs. showing; I'm not fond of the whole "LOOK LOOK HOW MUCH LILY LOVED YOU OMG SHE DIED FOR YOU OMG SO EPIC LOVE."

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. My favourite scene in that movie (that didn't involve Nev) was her walking away with Draco.

Mine too.

I was bouncing up and down clapping like a friggin seal from "LUCIUS! COME! HERE!", but I am an odd person. Probably my favorite thing in all the movies tbh.

[identity profile] jessieheart.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I can't decide if I like her better in the books or in the movie. In the movie, she's such an awesome mom and I really respect how they portrayed her. But in the books, she and Lucius hold hands under the table and look for Draco together, and I was really moved by their strong partnership.

But yes, I'm with you, Anon. It's easy to say that you'd want to be a mother like Lily, but I think Narcissa's devotion to Draco was just as potent as Lily's devotion to Harry.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Agree. I loved what they did in the movie, she leaves with Draco and you can tell she's thinking "fuck you, Voldemort, that kid's going to kick your ass". But I like Lucius and I can't forget that he was as worried for Draco as Narcissa was, and that they were looking for him together.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Fully agreed. Hated that they weren't presented as a strong family unit. Felt it really detracted from all three of their characters. Lucius, from seeing what was really important. Narcissa, staying true to her characterization from the 6th book when she defended Lucius from Bellatrix and being the strong supporting woman who wears the pants in the family. Draco, for realizing both parents made mistakes and being grateful that he was able to keep them and love them still.

Malfoy huddle. No one else allowed.

It's sad that people who only saw the movie won't realize just how poignant this was. The book at least gave us Malfoys sticking together, and it grinds my gears when people just assume Narcissa couldn't care less about Lucius just based on the movie.

Besides, who's to say that Lucius wasn't making sure they weren't being followed before rushing to get away?

Why choose? Narcissa in all things for life.

Sometimes I feel like the only person who wasn't all pissy over Helen McCroy's casting

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was under the impression that she wasn't even a Deatheater but just got dragged into because of Lucius.

Though, I'm probably am wrong due to lack of sleep from Pottermore.

[identity profile] fickletastictot.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
OT, but can you get past the Congratulations page in Pottermore? That's pretty much all I'm getting atm.

Narcissa is a kickass mom. Just...the scene in the forest and you can SEE the second she makes the decision to lie to Voldemort (an extremely accomplished Legilimens, i.e. HE CAN READ YOUR MIND) for the slim chance to save her son from this madness. And that's the pivot point on which the ending of the book hinges - she lies, she (inadvertently, I'm sure) saves Harry's life, Harry goes on to kick some ass and save the day.

All because one woman couldn't pass up the chance to save her child. Just beautiful.

tl;dr NARCISSA ROCKS.

Narcissa was great.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
ahaha so many things wrong with this... but she did turn out to be pretty cool.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I loved, loved, loved Narcissa both in the books and movies. The movies show a different angle, 'cause Lucius is shown as being more concerned with realizing injust how much shit he got himself and his family into, whereas in the books, it felt to me like Lucius and Narcissa were trying to get themselves through the ordeal together. So much hinges on Narcissa's lie, and it showcases the theme of motherly love so well...

I don't even know where I'm going. She's a great character. The scene was done beautifully in the film.

[identity profile] cornmouse.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I would rather have her as my mother than Molly Weasley or my own mother. Narcissa was fierce as fuck, and she handled a tough situation with class, love, and aplomb. A+, Narcissa.

+1

I agree with this. The love and protectiveness she had for her son, and what she was willing to do because of it (i.e. LIE TO VOLDEMORT WHO CAN SORTA-KINDA READ YOUR MIND) is one of the fiercest examples of mother love.

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
HP has the best moms. Considering it's a story about a 11-17 year old orphan Motherhood and Mother's Love are major themes.

After seeing the movie I really gained a huge appreciation for Narcissa. She did what she did for her son and lied to Voldemort for Draco. It's beautiful.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have no maternal instinct whatsoever save towards puppies and kittens, but if I did, Narcissa is the mother I'd want to be. She's just as good of a mom as Lily. Yeah, Lily giving her life to protect Harry and not even thinking of herself was pretty badass, but I think Narcissa would do the same if she was put in such a situation. I mean, she did risk her life lying to the Dark Lord's face just for some solace as to whether or not her son was alive.

[identity profile] novemberxi.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
She's a very loving mother indeed. I was impressed that she didn't sell Harry out.

After asking Harry if her son was alive she could have easily told Voldemort Harry wasn't dead and not risk being caught lying.

[identity profile] carey-pontmercy.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't adore the series like I did when I was younger, but I do love the Malfoys as a family. Yeah, they're not nice people and they enjoy twirling their metaphorical mustaches, but in the end they're just three little people looking out for each other.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Narcissa is a very admirable person when it comes to loving and protecting her child. If she had been in Lily's place, I truly believe she would have done the same thing for Draco.

However, she's an epic fail when it comes to imparting your kid with decent values. She never, in canon, displayed one single sentiment against the Death Eaters' agenda, until her own family was threatened. Whether passively or actively, she let her son grow up to be a racist, as well as a massive spoiled brat.

If Draco turns out to be an okay guy in epilogue-land, I doubt it will be because of her influence. She's an interesting character, one whom I wish had had more canon attention, but I probably wouldn't follow her child-rearing tips.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-06 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, anon, I really admired the love she had for her son too. I mean, considering how much guts it must have taken to lie to Voldemort's face for the chance to save her son, considering what he was known for being like? I think, given the circumstances, she did the best she could for her son. [Hell, she also made sure that someone would cover Draco's ass if, for whatever reason, he failed to kill Dumbledor]

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-06 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
No regrets. Narcissa is a damn fine mother.
