I was so mad that I felt bad for him and found myself cheering for him in this book. I seriously wanted him dead in all the others.

And man is Alfie Allen perfectly cast. He makes my skin crawl for one reason or another.

I think the one admirable theme you can pick up from that whole horrific subplot was that NO ONE deserves that level of torment and torture, no matter how awful a person they are. A lot of people who were eager to see Theon go through exactly what he went through changed their minds after actually reading it happening, and that's something GRRM did on purpose. All this desire for revenge and such sounds great in theory, but in practice just fucks everything up further, not to mention that even the worst people are still human beings that can and should elicit sympathy when they're subjected to sadism (as opposed to justice).

If you still think he "deserved" it, I'm glad I don't know you, honestly.

I don't feel bad for him, either. I think Theon deserved what he got, and his first chapter had me smiling in happiness. Yes, it is cruel - I just don't care. His were interesting chapters, but I don't feel sorry for him. I don't begrudge those who do like Theon, though. To each their own.

So funny story, whenever I hear someone decrying Theon as EVILLEST SCUM, HE MUST SUFFER, I just assume they're a bitter Stark stan.

Dislike him all you want, that's understandable, but Ramsay Bolton proves that you could do WAY worse than Theon in this series.

Seriously, though? The dude was debateably a rapist (and certainly a dick to women) and he murdered innocent people, including children. There's a lot about him to hate that isn't just about what he did to Winterfell.

You just made me think of something - are there any Frey stans? I've NEVER run into one. There are Theon stans, there are even Ramsay stans. Almost every character you can think of, no matter how detestable, has SOMEONE who likes em (even the Mountain That Rides), but I can't say the Freys do as far as I know.

I think his behavior towards the captain's daughter is borderline. She's ultimately willing, but he's also has a lot of power over her and uses it. And basically, he gets on board and is like, "I'll take that one" and no one can do much about it. He's clearly a man who feels entirely entitled to women and sex whenever he wants it and doesn't like hearing the word "no."

It's sort of like the argument over whether Dany's wedding night (in the books) is rape, I guess. Like, yeah, she says yes, but she also doesn't have much choice in the matter and just got sold to a man.

I disliked Theon long before he betrayed the Starks. I always thought he was a douche and a jerk. Not a bad guy, just a thoroughly unpleasant person. I definitly felt sorry for him in ADwD, but that doesn't make me -like- him any better than before, nor does it make me forgive him for the things he did. I loved his chapters, though, they were definitely interesting. I always found Theon's storyline boring as hell, but now I'm actually curious to see what will happen to him. Part of me hopes Stannis will give him a quick death, it would be mercy at this point. But I very much doubt it. So, yeah, I don't see a redemption arc or anything, nor do I suddenly like in. But as harsh as it sounds, ADwD finally turned Theon into a more interesting character for me. :/

I'm waiting for Asha to do whatever incredibly kickass thing she has to do to get back to the Iron Isles and make Theon declare the crowning of the new king unjust, even though I really don't wait Theon to be king of anything. (Then again, weak and infirm isn't really something the Iron Born go for, so I'm not seeing them crowning him). Or did I completely misunderstand that subtext?

But Asha was so in favour of the kingsmoot, it would look rather dumb for her not to accept its outcome. I don't know what I want to happen to Theon. A quick death would be the easy way, but that's unlikely. I feel like he has something important to do in the North ... just no idea what, considering the shape he's in.

Nah, I'm with you, anon. I found his chapters in ADWD super interesting, and I guess I feel bad for him in the sense that what he went through was horrible, but when the story was all "he's coming back to himself now!" I was like "ew, let him stay crazy and then die."

seriously everywhere I go all I see is "theon deserved it ugh what a jerk" "I don't care about theon" "his chapters are well written and great plotwise but I hate him sooooo much"

I never hated theon, I always thought he was designed to be a pathetic fuckup but more in a "look at your life, look at your choices" way than a hate way. if you didn't get that he always wanted to be a stark before adwd, you are bad at reading.

I think it was immensely obvious from the very beginning. Everything Theon does seems to be to try to gain Robb or Cat's favor. He despises Jon for challenging his place in the family's eyes and chooses to do many things that would benefit the Starks far more than himself- and for a douchebag guy, that means a lot.
