OMG a Gattaca secret! Seriously I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie and since I think it's incredibly underrated I'm happy to see this.

Also, yes I could definitely see issues from this film about genetic engineering and such being something that could happen in real life.

I love that movie.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have used clips of this movie in my class discussions about genetics and ethics, etc. Because I think it's an entirely too plausible possibility for the future and the idea terrifies me.

(I also get upset at how many of my students nowadays have never seen or even heard of it. Is it that old? AM I THAT OLD?)

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My class actually watched it in AP Bio last year. So at least we're getting to see it!

what :| it's like genetic racism ...

Me too. We watched it in class to basically show us how terrible the idea is, but I came out of it thinking it was a great idea.

You want people to be prejudged by the fact that they MIGHT be predisposed to having a genetic condition, so they should never amount to anything in life? Wow... I'm hoping you're being sarcastic.

Oh God, this movie. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, and as the years go on, it becomes more and more terrifying as the plausibility of the events occurring increases.

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. This film is a shining example of what sci-fi can be.

[identity profile] amberthetired.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved this movie, except it always bothered me that Ethan Hawke could pass for Jude Law. They just don't look anything alike to me.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Another comment just generally excited about the presence of a Gattaca secret.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Gattaca! I loved that movie. Seriously, there needs to be a fandom.

[Offtopic] If there's one thing in Gattaca I really don't want to come to pass, it's having the "on" button on the inside of the incinerator. I can see myself accidentally dying that way. [/Offtopic]

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE Gattaca!

I read an article on cracked.com recently that talked about basically what happened in Gattaca being something that will happen in the future. It scares me.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one of my favourite movies, and this secret has made me pathetically happy. I love you anon!

[identity profile] kouhette.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that movie. Th-that kind of future would indeed terrify me. Imagine all the kinds of things that could go wrong in believing genetics ensure everything.

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this movie, but from a genetics POV, don't panic. There is no way it's going to happen in the foreseeable future. Every one thinks human genetics is progressing like this

But I promise it's more like this

Only imagine the sloth's aim is to chart the entire floor of that river. Yeah. Look at him go. You're gonna make it one day, little buddy.

Today was the first time I thought about Gattaca in over a year. And then, bam! Gattaca secret!

I'm with you, OP!

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
That really is such a good movie.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Gattaca is one of my favorite movies. I hope this secret inspires some people to watch it!

The situation seems a bit exaggerated in the movie, but yeah, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Great movie, but, um, it's a dystopia. That's like hoping Brave New World or Hunger Games will come to pass.

If you actually want to see non-eugenics-created people relegated to the outskirts of society while the Richie-rich can buy their perfect designer babies, just because a movie was cool, then I'm afraid you've got a broken morality meter.

[identity profile] iamshunpike.livejournal.com 2011-08-22 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Is this the OP from secret 25? Your graphics skillzz and the font you use are lovely.
