I can understand it does not appeal to you, I can tell you some of us just find it fascinating to hypothesize about the genetics behind it.
Just like some of us like to make theories about how exactly time machines work, or if certain mutant powers could exist in real life.

Oh, but analyzing canon and how it works is a lot of the fun for many fans. It may bug you to see it being discussed, but there's no requirement for you to join the discussion.

As a biology major I would love this kind of thing except these discussions tend to devolve into punnet squares and crude genetic pedigrees. Whatever, half the time people don't even use 'dominant' and 'recessive' right so I should be generally psyched about the correct usage of 'heterozygous' but it's still so *wrong*. It never fits either one guys! Research the cool shit like RNA interactions, Transcription Factors, or genetic regulation in general. I'd punch a panda for the 'eyeless gene' to be brought up just *once*.

Tl;dr, I'm going to grumble about all these mother f'ing lit majors* in my mother f'ing genetic discussions.
(*and high school students, I shouldn't discriminate)

This secret made me laugh really hard- I don't see anything wrong with genetics discussions in the a:tla fandom and I could see how it could be very fun and interesting if you weren't as hopeless with biology as I am, I just think this secret is a good reminder of how our beloved show of magic karate and flying beaver-cows is kind of wonderfully ridiculous and shouldn't always be taken so seriously.
That is an awesome picture of Appa.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Magic A is Magic A. When you create a fictional system, you should make it consistent and understandable to your audience. You shouldn't just say "it's magic, I ain't gotta explain shit."

Honestly, it is something I really wish they had explained more in the show because it really puzzles me. Because if bending is indeed something that can be learned and taught and isn't innate, why must Aang be the last airbender? Why did the Fire Nation raids in the South Pole seem to be looking for people with innate talent and removing them from the tribe? It seemed like Katara was the only person down there who could learn. There's also pretty strict division in the learning of bending, except we know that isn't absolute because of those swamp water benders. But then if it's just learned and not genetic...why can't ANYBODY master all the elements through hard work and training?

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
there's meta about that?

...

those other fantasy things aren't enough?

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. I mean, I like thinking about it since I like stuff to make sense, but it really kind of annoys me when you get big discussions about THE ONE TRUE EXPLANATION for these kinds of things and people getting all butthurt because THEIR explanation is the only right one.

ATLA fandom loves butthurt, apparently.

That picture is adorable.

And I'm not an Avatar fan but eh, people like discussing what reasoning there could be behind stuff like the bending. Just because a show has magic elements or whatever it doesn't always mean scientific rules of our world don't apply.

Let me just... say......

Yes. The spirit someone has is a major factor in whether or not someone can bend. Reincarnation or destiny or whatever it is. But it's not the only factor. Notice that people with fire nation lineage are never born waterbenders. There is a genetic aspect to it. And people enjoy debating and theorizing exactly what the balance is and where the line is drawn. Especially people who have a fascination with genetics, like myself. It's no different than people trying to figure out how wizardry is effected by genetics in the Harry Potter universe. Identical twins in the Earth Kingdom have been shown as one Earthbender and one non-bender. Is that a difference of spirit? Is it nature VS. nurture? Or has the one sibling just not found his abilities yet? It's fascinating. I can't help but wonder, when it comes up.

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not into this show/fandom at all so I don't know what the hell is going on in this secret, but am I the only one reminded of an Alot here?

I'm interested in the mechanics and possibilities of passing on the gifts. In the new series Aang's son is an Airbender (why air and not water?) so there must be something genetic.

But all I really came to say is

APPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPA!! That is insanely adorable.

I will admit to over-thinking or over-analysing. It's a fun way to fill in the holes. But, yes, sometimes it's just nice to relax and chalk it up to flying bever-cows and magic karate.

This is honestly one of the best secrets I've seen here. Even the file name cracks me up. XD

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Love that Appa picture :D

[identity profile] liyosa.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Because some of us don't like swallowing shit without overanalysing what went into it.

It's certainly a lot less rage inducing than the so-called sociopolitical conversations where everyone starts applying their modern western ideals to a fantasy world which sometimes quite obviously does not have those ideals. It's also possibly eye-opening, and sometimes it can reveal holes which you can then fill in with your own ideas (and fic, and art, and other media that I haven't mentioned). You also find that in the process you strengthen your own world-building skills. And it's fun.

TL;DR: Yeah, it's fun.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
You go into a thread where people are discussing it, for fun, and get upset when they're angry with you for trying to trample on their fun?

No wonder it's a secret, jeeze. You sound like an unimaginative dick.
