Got any recs (sides Casablance, which I loved) on you?

I'd like to start watching older movies, but I don't wanna take shots in the dark and I'd like personal recommendations to avoid the obligatory and overrated. I'm not even that versed in movies before the 80s so anything before that would be cool.

And Gone With the Wind is on Netflix and I'd like a rec before I sit down for four goddamned hours.

* Anything Hitchcock (but especially Rear Window)

* The Philadelphia Story

I could really keep going, but this should be a good place to start.

This is another vote for Rear Window! God, I love that movie.

Uh, I did not like 'Gone With The Wind'. I understand that putting an unsympathetic female character onscreen was challenging for the time, but I could NOT LIKE her. I gave up at the 2 hour intermission and put in something better. (That said, you are not obligated to like something that you watch to respect it. I don't like Citizen Kane but I seriously respect it as a film)

'The Grand Illusion' is amazing, as is some of Hitchcock. My favorite Hitchcock films are 'Rear Window' and 'The 39 Steps' (I like 'The Birds' because lol!disasterflick). 'The Third Man' is fascinating and has some of the fasted pacing I've ever seen. Have you ever heard of 'Some Like It Hot'? It's one of the slashiest old flicks I've ever seen, and if you're more into the implacable cop genre, I'd recommend 'High Noon' (the only western I like) or 'Bullitt', which takes place in San Fransisco. I could go on and on and on with this so I think I'll stop for now.

Meh, I don't *mind* GWtW, but I don't love it either. In particular, I don't like Scarlett [and as

365reasonswhy said, for a southern girl that's sometimes considered blasphemous. I do, however, respect the character because for all she was manipulative bitch, she was a survivor in a very rough time period in history.

Eh, he had his hits and misses. I'm not a huge fan of Psycho, The Lady Vanishes and Suspicion left me cold, and North by Northwest had just about the stupidest ending I've ever seen. My dad doesn't like Dial M For Murder (I do) but loves Vertigo (which I have some problems with).

You like what you like. And that's ok.

Well, first off, what kind of movies do you like in general? Romcom/action/war/politics?
Best movie you've seen lately?, etc.

But in terms of quick recs, two things: check out Roger Ebert's The Great Movies reviews; they're all on his website, and he does what I feel is a good job of seeing films according to their own merits and not their Classic status, plus he describes films well enough that I find it easy to tell whether I'll like them or not.

Also, since you liked Casablanca, I'd recommend The Maltese Falcon; it's noir, has a lot of the same actors (although no Claude Rains, unfortunately), and pretty solid if not quite as good. Maybe All About Eve, which has some great, clearheaded insight into what it was like being a powerful woman at the time (mostly it sucked). I'm not a huge Jack Lemon fan, but Some Like It Hot is surprisingly charming.

ETA: Also, with regards to Gone With the Wind...I don't love it, but I think it's worth watching. Scarlett's hard to like, but I find the idea of her fascinating; fighting between her own capabilities (ambition, intelligence, business sense) and the Southern Belle ideal that she was raised to believe in and embody. The fact that that's reflected in her choice between men (Rhett her true self, Ashley the man she should want) makes the whole love triangle more bearable to me. Plus I like her and Melanie's relationship and how it develops. If you do decide to watch it, though, I would suggest you not try and watch the full four hour extravaganza of Southern Sympathy all at once, because it can wear on you. Watch it as mini-series, maybe an hour at a time or something.

I love Gone with the Wind, but maybe watch a couple of shorter old movies first to get into the swing of things. :P I'd also recommend Stage Door (pictured in the original secret), Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Thin Man. Oh, and Top Hat if you want to try a musical. (Actually if you want to try musicals, my list is much longer, but not everyone likes them.)

Half of the movies I was originally going to suggest were musicals. But I had to reign myself in.

Dammit, I can't stop.

Some 70's flicks:

The Wicker Man - (make sure to get the EXTENDED CUT, the director's cut is a lie, as is the original dvd release) an amazing film about sexuality vs repression, paganism vs. Christianity, conspiracies and British coppers. A similar feel to Hot Fuzz, if played less for lulz and more for creepy.

Theatre of Blood - the Ultimate Vincent Price movie of all time. Camp as hell but very enjoyable.

60's
A Man for All Seasons - Henry the VIIIth vs. Sir Thomas Moore.

2001: A Space Odyssey - my favorite film of all time. It's about the evolution of the human race and struggles with technology and there's... aliens?

50's
Twelve Angry Men - Though the whole film takes place in one room, you'll wonder how the hell the director managed to keep it so interesting. Because it is.

Seven Samurai - Hell Yes.

Harvey - James Stewart is fucking adorable with his big invisible rabbit friend. Everyone freaks out.

Seconding the recs for Wicker Man and 2001.

First of all, I usually love bad movies, but I hate the Nicholas Cage remake of Wicker Man with a passion because people won't give the original a chance because the remake is so bad, either that or they think I'm talking about the remake when I say I love the original. (The soundtrack is amazing, too!)

Second of all, if you ever get a chance to see 2001 in a theatre, DO IT.

Seconding for Twelve Angry Men. You'd never think that a film taking place in one room would be as interesting as it is. So good. <3

Don't waste your time with Gone With the Wind. All of the characters are unlikeable, the plot drags, it's just GOD AWFUL. I don't care that it's a classic or how amazing the cinematography is or whatever, it's horrible.

As for recs, I really like old horror movies, especially old Vincent Price stuff. Someone above mentioned Hitchcock, so I'll just say that my favorite Hitchcock film is Rebecca (I like it so much that two of my user icons are from that movie)

This for the Gone with the Wind. I want the two hours I wasted watching half of it back. We've come to expect more from films than 'looks really pretty' and 'my kind-of racist grandmother really likes it'.

As for more horror films, how about Fritz Lang's M, or The Invisible Man? or Dial M for Murder? (I also consider Dr. Strangelove to be a very kooky sort of horror-comedy.)

Well, I am shocked to be in the minority here, but if you're really asking for someone to recommend Gone With the Wind, allow me to be that person.

I am kind of picky about old-timey movies, for many of the reasons mentioned above, but despite the four hour running time and really uncomfortable material, I could watch the thing again and again. Scarlett O'Hara is a great character (do not confuse with great person, obvi); Vivien Leigh is amazing.

Oh, I agree with you. I mean, granted Scarlett O'Hara isn't likable and that it can be uncomfortable, but it's really a great movie, in my opinion. I honestly loved it.

So many recs fill my heart with gold. FEEL NO SHAME. KEEP THEM COMING.

I feel very greedy now, but uh. Kurosawa's stuff? I'm always interested but then it still feels a bit chore-y.

I'll admit I haven't watch any Kurosawa (for the same reason), but my dad loved Rashomon and it's one of the earliest (if not the first) films to have conflicting flashbacks, so for film history's sake at least it might be worthwhile.

I'd also rec Seven Samurai (and am curious about Yojimbo- I've never seen that one) but I can't find it on youtube. (Roshomon is supposedly in the public domain, so no one can take it down.)

As for other recommendations, well...

At the moment I'm watching Get Carter for the first time, which seems to be what the Bank Job was a spiritual sequel to (well, Get Carter and the original Italian Job- ANOTHER REC), and enjoying it quite a lot. The whole thing is also on youtube. Very NSFW, tho.

There's also always Yellow Submarine? I don't know if you've seen that- it's not classic Hollywood but it's before 1980, and everyone ought to see a little non-Disney animation at least once in their lives.

I support many of the movies suggested in this thread, and now I'll add my own.

*Metropolis, by Fritz Lang. It's one of the most visually amazing films I've ever seen. Get your hands on the newest version, though; earlier cuts are apparently incomprehensible.

*Stagecoach.

*Wuthering Heights.

*Captain Blood.

*The Man who Cheated Himself (not exactly a classic movie, but a very good film noir).

*The Great Race.

*Anything from 1939, which is apparently the greatest year in movie history.

Have fun! Older movies are awesome once you get into them.

I recently watched The Misfits and I highly recommend it. It was written by Frank Miller and stars Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, and Miller's then-wife Marilyn Monroe. It really gives you that unsettled feeling all the way through. D:
