A Couple of Reasons Why Studio Era Hollywood Films May Not Have Fandoms (Or, Reasons Why Some People Do Not Like "Classic" Movies):

1) Acting styles have evolved and it's sometimes to difficult to see pre-Brando/method stuff as anything other than over-done and too theatrical.
2) Relationship dynamics and gender roles have changed, and some people feel uncomfortable watching films steeped in that sort of culture, and would feel especially uncomfortable writing fic or anything set in that period that might be perceived as glamorizing it.
3) Ditto race. Even more so race, frankly. (Casablanca is on of my favorite films ever, but I still cringe every time I hear Ilsa refer to Sam as "that boy playing the piano").
4) Film as a medium has changed so much since its inception; even beyond the length of things like, say, Citizen Kane, the way things are plotted, written, even edited is so different that it takes getting used to and (generally) required effort is the enemy of big fandom presence.
5) A lot of stuff that studio-era Hollywood pioneered has become so common it's cliche at this point, and no one enjoys watching movies made entirely of cliches.
6) Film canons in general tend to be less likely to lead to fandoms, unless there's sequel potential, which is obviously not a possibility.

I say this as someone who loves classic movies; I love Casablanca and I have enduring affection for good ol' Archie Leach and just about every film he was ever in. But my taste is not everyone's and I accept that without judgment.

+1

Also I'd say that for some people who aren't familiar with old movies they don't automatically understand how things like the relationship and gender dynamic was supposed to come across at the time.

awesome response, i love them too but i see people's issues with them

And in the meantime, I agree.

Got any recs (sides Casablance, which I loved) on you?

I'd like to start watching older movies, but I don't wanna take shots in the dark and I'd like personal recommendations to avoid the obligatory and overrated. I'm not even that versed in movies before the 80s so anything before that would be cool.

And Gone With the Wind is on Netflix and I'd like a rec before I sit down for four goddamned hours.

A can of worms. You opened one.

[identity profile] adventuringlady.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
* The African Queen
* All About Eve
* Singin' in the Rain
* It Happened One Night
* Anything Hitchcock (but especially Rear Window)
* Breakfast at Tiffany's
* The Philadelphia Story
* Some Like It Hot

I could really keep going, but this should be a good place to start.

[identity profile] kayleen-san.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
This is another vote for Rear Window! God, I love that movie.

Re: And in the meantime, I agree.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I did not like 'Gone With The Wind'. I understand that putting an unsympathetic female character onscreen was challenging for the time, but I could NOT LIKE her. I gave up at the 2 hour intermission and put in something better. (That said, you are not obligated to like something that you watch to respect it. I don't like Citizen Kane but I seriously respect it as a film)

'The Grand Illusion' is amazing, as is some of Hitchcock. My favorite Hitchcock films are 'Rear Window' and 'The 39 Steps' (I like 'The Birds' because lol!disasterflick). 'The Third Man' is fascinating and has some of the fasted pacing I've ever seen. Have you ever heard of 'Some Like It Hot'? It's one of the slashiest old flicks I've ever seen, and if you're more into the implacable cop genre, I'd recommend 'High Noon' (the only western I like) or 'Bullitt', which takes place in San Fransisco. I could go on and on and on with this so I think I'll stop for now.

Re: And in the meantime, I agree.

*fastest. You can tell how excited I am about a topic for the number of stupid typos I make.

Re: And in the meantime, I agree.

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like Scarlett either, and as a southern girl that's sometimes considered blasphemous.

Re: And in the meantime, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I don't *mind* GWtW, but I don't love it either. In particular, I don't like Scarlett [and as [livejournal.com profile] 365reasonswhy said, for a southern girl that's sometimes considered blasphemous. I do, however, respect the character because for all she was manipulative bitch, she was a survivor in a very rough time period in history.

Though I also dislike Hitchcock's stuff which is considered pretty blashphemous for someone who loves classic era films. So.

Re: And in the meantime, I agree.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, first off, what kind of movies do you like in general? Romcom/action/war/politics?
Best movie you've seen lately?, etc.

But in terms of quick recs, two things: check out Roger Ebert's The Great Movies reviews; they're all on his website, and he does what I feel is a good job of seeing films according to their own merits and not their Classic status, plus he describes films well enough that I find it easy to tell whether I'll like them or not.

Also, since you liked Casablanca, I'd recommend The Maltese Falcon; it's noir, has a lot of the same actors (although no Claude Rains, unfortunately), and pretty solid if not quite as good. Maybe All About Eve, which has some great, clearheaded insight into what it was like being a powerful woman at the time (mostly it sucked). I'm not a huge Jack Lemon fan, but Some Like It Hot is surprisingly charming.

ETA: Also, with regards to Gone With the Wind...I don't love it, but I think it's worth watching. Scarlett's hard to like, but I find the idea of her fascinating; fighting between her own capabilities (ambition, intelligence, business sense) and the Southern Belle ideal that she was raised to believe in and embody. The fact that that's reflected in her choice between men (Rhett her true self, Ashley the man she should want) makes the whole love triangle more bearable to me. Plus I like her and Melanie's relationship and how it develops. If you do decide to watch it, though, I would suggest you not try and watch the full four hour extravaganza of Southern Sympathy all at once, because it can wear on you. Watch it as mini-series, maybe an hour at a time or something.

[identity profile] poisonivory.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I love Gone with the Wind, but maybe watch a couple of shorter old movies first to get into the swing of things. :P I'd also recommend Stage Door (pictured in the original secret), Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Thin Man. Oh, and Top Hat if you want to try a musical. (Actually if you want to try musicals, my list is much longer, but not everyone likes them.)

[identity profile] adventuringlady.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Half of the movies I was originally going to suggest were musicals. But I had to reign myself in.

Re: And in the meantime, I agree.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Dammit, I can't stop.

Some 70's flicks:

The Wicker Man - (make sure to get the EXTENDED CUT, the director's cut is a lie, as is the original dvd release) an amazing film about sexuality vs repression, paganism vs. Christianity, conspiracies and British coppers. A similar feel to Hot Fuzz, if played less for lulz and more for creepy.

Theatre of Blood - the Ultimate Vincent Price movie of all time. Camp as hell but very enjoyable.

60's
A Man for All Seasons - Henry the VIIIth vs. Sir Thomas Moore.

2001: A Space Odyssey - my favorite film of all time. It's about the evolution of the human race and struggles with technology and there's... aliens?

50's
Twelve Angry Men - Though the whole film takes place in one room, you'll wonder how the hell the director managed to keep it so interesting. Because it is.

Seven Samurai - Hell Yes.

Harvey - James Stewart is fucking adorable with his big invisible rabbit friend. Everyone freaks out.

If I post another rec-comment, I'm so, so sorry.

Don't waste your time with Gone With the Wind. All of the characters are unlikeable, the plot drags, it's just GOD AWFUL. I don't care that it's a classic or how amazing the cinematography is or whatever, it's horrible.

As for recs, I really like old horror movies, especially old Vincent Price stuff. Someone above mentioned Hitchcock, so I'll just say that my favorite Hitchcock film is Rebecca (I like it so much that two of my user icons are from that movie)

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I am shocked to be in the minority here, but if you're really asking for someone to recommend Gone With the Wind, allow me to be that person.

I am kind of picky about old-timey movies, for many of the reasons mentioned above, but despite the four hour running time and really uncomfortable material, I could watch the thing again and again. Scarlett O'Hara is a great character (do not confuse with great person, obvi); Vivien Leigh is amazing.

This is amazing and I am happy.

[identity profile] digiphantom.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
So many recs fill my heart with gold. FEEL NO SHAME. KEEP THEM COMING.

I feel very greedy now, but uh. Kurosawa's stuff? I'm always interested but then it still feels a bit chore-y.

One vot for the Marx Brothers!

Re: And in the meantime, I agree.

I support many of the movies suggested in this thread, and now I'll add my own.

*Metropolis, by Fritz Lang. It's one of the most visually amazing films I've ever seen. Get your hands on the newest version, though; earlier cuts are apparently incomprehensible.

*Stagecoach.

*Wuthering Heights.

*Captain Blood.

*The Man who Cheated Himself (not exactly a classic movie, but a very good film noir).

*The Great Race.

*Anything from 1939, which is apparently the greatest year in movie history.

Have fun! Older movies are awesome once you get into them.

I recently watched The Misfits and I highly recommend it. It was written by Frank Miller and stars Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, and Miller's then-wife Marilyn Monroe. It really gives you that unsettled feeling all the way through. D:

2) Personally, yes, I find the relationship dynamics and gender roles unappealing and a bit uncomfortable

[identity profile] baka-deshi.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, this is it in a nutshell. I respect and enjoy a lot of "classic" movies, but the sexism and racism inherent in many of them does make me profoundly uncomfortable. It's bad enough trying to enjoy manga/anime.

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
<3 Archie Leach reference.

This post is pretty perfect. I do wish more people were into classic movies, but given all of the reasons you stated, I understand why more people aren't.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I loves me some Archie Leach ;)

I honestly think one of the biggest barriers to people liking "classic" films is their advocates going around saying "YOU MUST LIKE THESE MOVIES THEY ARE CLASSICS THEY ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN MODERN CRAP YOU UNSOPHISTICATED RUBE". It just sets up unrealistic expectations and makes people adversarial from the get go. I've had really good luck introducing friends to films both new and old based on things I know they like, and not putting too much pressure on them either way.
