I agree. Too much of the game centers primarily on Yuna's pilgramage, Yuna makes more sense as the protagonist for FFX.

Agreed 100%. Yuna is my favorite heroine ever, and it's really a shame that she wasn't "officially" allowed to fill that role.

I'm not even one of those fans who absolutely can't stand Tidus and even I agree that Yuna should have been the main character. I wish we could have had her for FFX and not only FFX-2.

But then you get to Gagazet and suddenly Tidus is the one sacrificing himself and not telling Yuna; it becomes much more his story.

In the end, though, it's Their story. That's part of the theme.

I always thought that was pretty obvious; Tidus is just the narrator (and I love him anyway).

But I do agree with tenebrais, he does become more involved with the whole story in the second half so it ends up being centralized on both of them.

Somehow, I could never really see Tidus as anything but a vehicle to view Yuna's tale. Though maybe that was the point.

I think of her as more the co-protagonist, because Tidus really does have agency later in the story.

But yeah, Yuna's fucking awesome. I love her.

The only thing that seems to make it even relevant to being Tidus' story is the coincidence of his father being Sin. Every other plot point in the game technically surrounded Yuna's journey. Temple trials, summoner rivalries, Al Bhed confrontations? Tidus is about as much of a protagonist for FFX as Anakin Skywalker is for Phantom Menace.

"Main character" or not, Tidus was pretty much there to ask the "D'oh!" questions to prompt answers from the Spira cast that would educate us as viewers of the story.

Yes Tidus keeps saying it's 'his story' but that's cos it's his view of the events in this weird land a giant whale sent him to. And also to give the audience a clueless vehicle who needs everything explained to, of course.

In a sense, I think you're right. Yuna is an absolutely amazing character: I'd go so far as to say she's my favourite female character in gaming. Her inner strength, resolve, courage and pure heart, coupled with her elegance, grace and dignity, inspire me greatly.

On the other hand, though, without Tidus, Sin would never have been destroyed. If it wasn't for his influence, Yuna would have sacrificed her life for the Final Summon, and the cycle of death would have continued. Yuna's love for him gave her something to live for, and lead her to question Yevon's destructive traditions. And in the end, Tidus decided he would rather sacrifice his existence, and his love, so that Yuna's world could be free of sin.

I suppose it can be seen both ways. Yuna's strength and determination to save Spira made her a true heroine, but Tidus was the reason Sin could ultimately be destroyed. Either way, they're both heroes.

(His constant corny 'This is my story!' did truly irritate me. It wasn't exclusively HIS story at all. I'm glad Yuna called him out on it that one time.)

I akin Tidus to being like Nick from the Great Gatsby in that while they're the narrators of the story, they don't really do much in the protagonist part of being the main character.
