I know I should exercise. I really do. I don't get winded just walking around, but I live in a third story walk-up and I am winded by the time I get to my door if I'm carrying things (which I normally am). Also, my BMI is like 43.

But exercising is just so god damn mind numbingly boring.

This :/ It's not my body that protests the idea of exercising: it's my brain. "No, not the mind-breakingly boring exercise time! Please don't make me go through another half-hour of doing nothing but monitoring our breathing and counting reps. I swear I'll go on strike or something if you force me through that again!" ... I wish I were joking, but I'm really not. The very idea of exercising bores me to death, and I'll do anything to stop thinking about it :(

Maybe you could try to find an exercise that isn't "exercising"? I have a lot of friends who will never hit the gym with me, but they enjoy taking long walks. (Geocaching, if you have access to a GPS, is a great way to set a goal.)

But most importantly: don't give up just because you aren't currently fit enough to do everything. There was a long period where I couldn't walk (broken leg) and it was tempting just to quit exercise altogether -- everything was hard and nothing worked like it was "supposed" to. I stuck with it though, and I can't express how much better life is now.

get an ipod/cheap MP3 player! get audiobooks and high-BPM music (even if you don't like Gaga, she's motivating as heck), read magazines on the elliptical, zone out and think about a project. yes it's boring, but it feels sooo good afterwards

Have you tried taking a class of some sort? Obviously not everyone can afford them (or a gym that includes them with membership, which is what I do), so if you can't, ignore this post.

But if you can, that may be one way of breaking up the monotony. I've started taking dance and yoga classes, and even a total body conditioning type class for weights, and I find them a lot more fun (and motivating) than running on a treadmill or just lifting weights. A lot of gyms have a ton of different options for classes, so that might be something to look in to. (Plus for me, personally, I find it helpful to have a schedule I HAVE to stick to because it's not self defined).

Find something fun! Find a sport you've always wanted to play, find something you *enjoy* doing. Give yourself goals of some sort to work towards-it helps a lot.

For me, it's realizing that I can pick up more heavy shit and put it back down than most other girls that makes me keep going to the gym. That, and my workout takes ~45 minutes. (lift mwf, swim tthss) and I'm going back to rugby once my insurance kicks in.

Just running a treadmill or whatever is mind numbingly boring, but find something you enjoy doing. it makes it a lot easier.

Well, a lot of people have never been interesting in playing any sport at all.

[identity profile] ianthine9.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
True, but most people can find something exercise wise that's interesting.

there's more to working out than running around a track for 14 laps, or playing a hamster by running on a treadmill/sitting on an exercise bike for 5 hours.

that's the point i was trying to make. It don't matter what you do, just find something you find fun. For me, it's rugby and lifting heavy shit and putting it back down. (225# deadlift crew, represent!)

[identity profile] ianthine9.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
And cause I'm a broke mofo who can't edit posts-lifting is the quickest way to lose weight, btw.

On my lifting days, if I take 30mins, that's a lot. it's run on the track for 2-3 laps just to get the heart rate up, do 3 diff lifts (it alternates, I do the 5x5-one day it's deads, milpress, pullups, the other it's squats, benches, rows) and its 5 sets of 5 reps each, ramping the weight with each set. if it takes 45 minuts, that's me being slow and lazy, and the only reason i run a few laps is just to get blood flowing, because at my gym, the track surronds the workout equipment-if it took effort, odds are I'd jump right into the lifting.

It's like. less than an hour a week total to lose like, a pound a week. It may not be the most interesting thing ever, but even if it's boring, it's quick.cause lifting raises your metabolism for a few hours. I've lost like 100# just from lifting and being aware of what i eat.

[identity profile] baka-deshi.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed - and if you aren't physically capable of free weight lifting, there are also water exercises/body weight resistance exercises you can investigate. Building muscle is one of the best ways to build strength and rev you up :)

Have you tried one of those dance-type videos? (Libraries have them if you want to test before you buy.) It could help. I totally hear you on the boring, I can't do treadmill or bike or anything like that because it's so boring to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an excuse. There are as many forms of physical activity as there are fandoms (more, probably) and I would be shocked if you found every single one boring. Your issue is that you are lazy and would rather sit around on the internet then find a physical activity that you enjoy and then do it.
