Well if you read the secret above OP, I think there are people who agree with you.

It was really bad. Like we went through all this mystery with River just for her to end up being his wife? WHAT EVERYONE THOUGHT SHE WAS IN THE FUCKING BEGINNING.

It was just not pulled off well at all. I'm at the point where I really don't want to see River at all anymore and I used to like her.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly think Moffat thinks the viewers are idiots. This is the second time he pulled his "OMG, isn't this a twist!" thing waaaay after many viewers ha already figured out what the twist was...

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think Moffat kind of realized fandom had figured out where he was going and decided to backtrack and come up with a bunch of nonsensical ridiculous plots that weren't even necessary in the end because he still took it all to the same conclusion.

I would have preferred if he had just been playing with us and the "Wedding of River Song" title had been a smoke screen for something else. Having the Doctor and River get married seemed pointless and only seemed to serve as, "Well now that you're my wife, you'll do what I say!" (that may not have been the point, but I just got this sketchy feeling from it.)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
After having read all the idiotic secrets and seen the nerdrage, I'm certain the fans are idiots.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because Davies not being subtle and shoving the plot in our face wasn't condescending or thinking we were idiots at all.

The most subtle thing Davies ever did was YANA and four fucking beats. Everything else was spoon-fed.

They're both not good writers, but at least Moffat leaves things in the episodes you can notice when going back.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because Davies [etc]

We're talking about a story written by Stephen Moffat. What does whether Davies was a good writer or not have to do with it?

Totally, totally this. It was like Moffat explicitly built up to the whole wedding thing, then got to the point where he was supposed to write something so that it became surpring and interesting, couldn't think of anything and just went 'fuck it, he'll just marry her in thirty seconds and its entire significance will be to expediate another aspect of the plot!'

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
That's like the entire problem I have with Moffat's recent Who wrapped up with a pretty little bow on top. It feels like he doesn't write characters or stories as much as he writes collections of plot devices.

I liked the Astronaut/Moon two-parter well enough even though it was guilty of that sort of writing but after that all I could see was just how much more interesting episodes focusing on the little concepts he crammed his episodes full of would be.

An episode centering on the Tesselecta? Something that actually took time to explore a world where all of time was happening at once? Sure, sign me up! But instead what we got was... well, what we got.

It's a shame because I consider Eleven ~my Doctor~ but I just can't stand Moffat's writing, as contradictory as that may be. I want to be optimistic about series 7, but...

[identity profile] mollywobbles867.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't satisfied with it either.

[identity profile] tawabids.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Agree. Forever. Go step on lego, Moffat.

Also, that scene in the s6 trailer where River got her kit off - did I just miss that? I WAITED ALL SEASON FOR THAT AND INSTEAD WE GOT A CRAP WEDDING, CLEARLY MOFFAT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT WOMEN WANT AT ALL. Unless I just missed it, can anyone tell me?

[identity profile] blienky27.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It was a scene taken out of The Impossible Astronaut, I believe. I was frustrated by that as well.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Moffat said the scene was from the season premiere, but was "too naughty" and he doesn't know what he was thinking when he wrote it in.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Love for "go step on a lego" ahhahaha. good lord that was always torture.

[identity profile] aetter.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I just feel sad for River at this point. As it stands now she's sacrificed way too much for him and he's done fairly little for her in return. Happy 'nights' with the Doctor or not, her entire existence was about him and that doesn't sit well with me at all.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-10-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it bugs me that the Doctor is just like "LOL well you can spend years wrongly imprisoned for my murder so I can lower my profile, that's cool".
Edited 2011-10-15 01:29 (UTC)

[identity profile] aetter.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. She gave up all of her future regenerations, her freedom and ultimately her life, but the Doctor is basically okay with letting the universe believe she killed him.
Either I have to accept that the Doctor is a lot colder than I thought, or it's just terrible characterisation for the sake of making a convoluted plotline work.

[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going with the second option. I don't even watch the show but it seems loaded with Woman=The Giving Tree syndrome. Do not want.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-10-15 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm not sure whose characterization horrified me more in that scene.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
If it helps, I was also sort of bothered by the whole, 'River's whole life revolves around the Doctor', but this meta (http://owlsie.livejournal.com/521961.html) posted after LKH sort of made me go, "...Oh, HEY!"?

Her life was never her own anyway, from the day she was born. But even if it means her life revolving around the Doctor, she chose it to be like that. Sort of, "Fuck you, Silence, I'm going to subvert the hell out of what you raised me to do." And that's at least some consolation - she chose her own life path.

Still not sure about the Doctor basically nudging her into a position where she'd be in prison for life, but to be fair, it doesn't exactly look like it can hold her ;)

[identity profile] kribban.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, don't we already know from her meeting with Ten that she does get out eventually?

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we do. And we know that's what happens at the end of Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone (presumably). Still, it does seem like she's in there for a while... although, again, it might as well be cardboard for all its staying power. It's basically a holiday house with bars ;)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus, he already knew she was in prison before he knew why. And she has explicitly told him not to change anything about her life. So, it is kind of on her orders.

That's the impression I got, that River was centering her life around the Doctor because it was that or...well, the Silence, in a roundabout way. And that she was actively choosing to stay in the prison, considering that the moment he got the phone call she broke out - so she could apparently escape at any time. Besides, however much her life centered around the Doctor, it really did seem like she did other stuff with her time, too, at least to me.

I love love love Alex Kingston's performance and the chemistry she and Matt Smith have. I even like lots of stuff about her character and the general idea of their Time Traveler's Wife style relationship.

But yeah, I agree that the whole thing became incredibly creepy and off putting. She gives up everything for him, even agrees to spend her life in prison for a murder she didn't commit. And I don't see why. It seems like the least he could do is pull some strings there. Even if he had actually been dead, I don't even see how she'd be responsible for killing him, since the suit did all the work.

So now it's just tragic and horrible how she spends her whole life in jail and gives up all her regenerations and oh yeah FREAKING DIES FOR HIM and all she gets out of the deal is, what? "Nights" with the Doctor? Which makes it even creepier. He also gets this captive fantasy wife he met when she was a baby out of the deal. What the hell?

I think I need to stop ranting. The strangest thing is I do vaguely ship it because of the acting and such (and I've never shipped the Doctor with anyone before). Maybe that's why it bugs me so much.
