But going overboard is the ENTIRE POINT of Lady Gaga! She takes everything other singers/celebrities do and cranks it up to 11. It's hilarious.

Leather shoes and skirts turn into shoes and skirts made of meat.
Sexy dancing in a bikini turns into creepy dancing in a bikini.
Hair dyed interesting colours turns into hair dyed eye-bleeding colours.
Slightly controversial music videos turn into mindfuck music videos.

I watch her videos once to see what it's all about and then that's it. They have little to do with her song and the weird factor isn't my cup of tea. I think the only video that I did enjoy was Paparazzi, but that was pretty toned down (compared to her others) and felt more like a story. I'm really not that big a fan of music videos anyways. Most of them are shit.

I think most of her music is catchy. I mean, it's club music, so I don't expect a whole lot from it either. Her voice is nice when it's not completely processed (I love her accapella versions). I do think she's a talented woman, but she's also incredibly over-rated.

This is how I feel about Gaga. I understand that the gimmicks and outrageousness were a way of creating a career - she's a good singer with good music but so are thousands of others, and when she was recording under her real name she wasn't really successful. The freak show was a way of setting herself apart and creating an identity, and it worked. She's a big star now.

But she used to not take it seriously, at least that's my impression. She was having fun with it but didn't buy into her own hype. She does now. She's fallen down that rabbit hole completely and now she just looks ridiculous.

And since I'm talking about Gaga, I find it incredibly hypocritical of her to sing "Born that Way" with all of her body modifications.

as a huge (and admittedly mildly deranged) fan of hers i want to thank you for at least giving her a chance. ymmv when it comes to anything she does but i'm glad you dont HAET HER 4EVER OMG SHE SUX. she can be very polarizing and i'm glad you have the sense to be level-headed in your opinion. :)

I'm ambivalent about her music but I like how she's turning her life into a Gesamtkunstwerk. What she does is not merely a gimmick for attention because there's alot of deep thought involved in all aspects and phases of creation and the promotion. Her work can be enjoyed from a singular view (e.g. listening to her music) but up to a academic viewpoint. Whether or not you find what she creates asthetical pleasing it's a form of modern, media spanning art.
