Wait, he was severely traumatized in canon?

Because the movies are the best representation of the books. Clearly.

I fucking LOLed.

Seriously. Harry has to be the most ridiculous character in the books. "Voldemort killed my parents and has been trying to kill me since I was an infant? I'll be over here making fun of Hermione for being studios and NOT STUDYING EVERY SPELL I CAN. Oh, look! A Snitch!"

At the end of Goblet. In OotP he has all the symptoms of PSTD (plus a few Voldemort-related problems).

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely, anon. It's always bothered me that his depression in the fifth book was never properly addressed and that fans write it off as him being annoying and too whiny. As a person, Harry is flawed. Yeah he's a hero, but he's still just a kid, a boy who was abused growing up and then had the weight of the world placed on his shoulders. People died at Voldemort's hand, and in a way he will probably always believe that some of them died because of him.

Depression comes in many forms, Harry's was rage. I think part of the problem is the way our society views depression and how limited anyone's knowledge of serious things like PTSD is. Not only did Harry see someone die, he never got to properly grieve or cope with that loss and the guilt that came with Cedric's death. And then the feelings that came with Sirius' I feel he just pushed far down so he wouldn't have to deal and so he wouldn't make the same mistake. Plus, right after Sirius' death he's dumped with the prophecy.

MTE

[identity profile] specimen-47.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's gotten to the point that I just assume fans are either too young or too ignorant to educate themselves on depression, and/or other psychological problems, and how they *actually* work as opposed to the incorrect ways it's portrayed at large.

And, I think, no one cares about a trauma survivor unless that survivor is a woobie who is broken and needs to be "fixed" somehow, particularly in a stereotypically non-threatening state. Harry's rage is the exact opposite of that, so it can't/doesn't fit into fandom's fantasy fuel.

order of the phoenix is really special to me for that reason. i've been there. when i was harry's age i felt shut out from my friends, was depressed... it sucks. sometimes you have these uncontrollable bouts of rage. it doesn't make you "emo" or "whiny." it makes you human. and for a kid who has a lot more baggage than your average hormonal, angsty teenager... i'm surprised he managed to get over his anger that quickly.

i love harry, he'll always be my favorite character in the series because as a child who lost a parent and had those confusing emotions, i always found it so easy to relate to him. so i find it really tiresome when people just write off his justified rage and frustration as "annoying" because clearly they have no idea what they're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I have chronic depression myself and I still hate Harry as a character. Am I like, allowed to do that? I also hate Order of the Phoenix as a book, but because it's too damn long and has loads of pointless subplots, not because of capslock!Harry. And really, my main problem with capslock!Harry is that he never fucking apologizes. But then again, neither does Ron. Oh wait, I hate Ron too.

This. Plus no one gave him any support or sympathy for the loss of his parents in the first place. No wonder he had rage. Rage was the most sane and healthy reaction for him!

I adored CAPSLOCK!Harry too! Whenever someone says he was irritating, I feel like yelling YES, THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT! (no visual pun intended) Of course he was irritating and dickish and moronic -- that's what fifteen year olds are, especially when they're under enormous pressure, are suffering from trauma, and almost everyone around them is distant and/or sneering at them. And that's why when this fifteen year old was put into adult circumstances he's not mature enough to handle, the results were so emotionally overwhelming and eventually tragic. And when the fifteen-year-old in question comes from a neglectful family who forced him to keep all his emotions bottled up as simmering resentment and cynicism, of course his outbursts are going to be of rage, not weeping and shivering and woobiness. I tell you, I have never, ever, ever been so able to feel the sincerity and immediacy of a fictional character's thoughts and emotions as vividly as I felt Harry's in OotP.

In that book, I could feel and understand and empathize with every thought Harry had and line he said, and absolutely adored every moment of his assholish, irritable, rage-suppressing, whiny, narrow-minded, idiotic, explosive, sarcastic, passive-aggressive, impulsive, constantly-screaming douchebaggery.

In spite of his completely atypical circumstances and the fact that the book couldn't explicitly describe any sexual thoughts, he was the most believable fifteen-year-old I've ever read.

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think, to some extent, it's fair that there isn't much in the way of sexual thoughts. I think he should have had some and would have, but I think the majority of his thoughts were focused on the issue of Voldemort. Again, not saying that he shouldn't have any at all/didn't have any becasue he is still a fifteen year old, straight (as far as book/movie canon outwardly state) boy.

I completely agree with you, fellow Anon. Completely.

[identity profile] ageofalejandro.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Homes, you are clearly reading the wrong fic, lol. Check out dark!Harry. I'm utterly loathe to recommend the darklordpotter forum (rampant misogyny, lolwhut), but they do have a variety of otherwise truly excellent writers who do exactly that.
They totally suffer from a couple cliches (evil Dumbledore or Weasleys, sometimes), but the quality is otherwise sterling. Here's their fanfic database (http://www.patronuscharm.net/)

There PLENTY of fic where he's not weak/whimpering/pitiful, there's also many fics where he is many of those things (and others where he responds to that by shifting his interests and loyalties to the dark side), you just need to look harder.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I hate cookie-cutter hurt/comfort fic. So unoriginal. Especially if there's rape, its practically guaranteed to be boring.

[identity profile] nymosy.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
this author (http://www.amanuensis1.com/mainfanficpage.html) is great at writing harry as reacting bravely to traumatic situations, if you can stomach rape fic.

[identity profile] melusinahp.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you, anon. I wish I knew who you were so I could friend you. I agree 100%.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you OP~ I once read a fic where Harry found himself in an abusive relationship with an original male character and I don't know if I've ever been so annoyed with how a character was portrayed in fic. It wasn't Harry at all~ I didn't like.

Anon, you're so effing awesome. Nothing angers me more in the fandom than when people dismiss OotP!Harry as "emo" (or worse, with "teenage angst" wich appeared in EVERY SINGLE FUCKING REVIEW of the movie), when he was in fact suffering from a textbook case of PSTD.

I'd never made the connection that he'd react that way to further trauma (I don't read much fic with that plot), but you make a very interesting point. And an older, more powerful and more unhinged Harry would certainly make for entertaining fic.
