Not trying to go on the attack, but I'm curious about the corneas part. Why do you would want your body to remain whole after death? You won't be around to care about it, and organ donations can save lives. Just curious about the reasoning.

Because people are stupid and have stupid superstitious objections that prevent them from helping other people in need

My IQ plummets whenever I read one of your comments.

Yep.

AYRT

Corneas don't save lives and it wasn't by accident that I specified them. I don't have any particular objection to my other organs being used but I don't want my eyes fucked with when I'm dead. Yes (this is for childings) it's ~superstitious, but to be quite honest, I don't fucking care. It's my body and, as the laws currently stand where I live, I have some say over what happens to it.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
their donation enhances the lives of the living though. You aren't going to be needing them (where-ever you are going afterwards) so why be selfish? You could enhance someone's life, and at zero cost.

Me, I'm leaving my body to medical science (although if they can find any bits worth the salvaging they are more than welcome, most of my organs are shot though) and I hope I can do some good in death.

The laws need changing to prevent selfishness, and superstition, from impeding medicine and science.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't be at zero cost though. It would be at the cost of my happiness and peace of mind while I'm still alive, knowing how my body would be violated when I die.

You're dead, who cares
You won't know, you will cease to exist as a person, letting valuable parts of you go to waste

Don't worry babe, you're not going to be better off than any of the other zombies just cause you kept your corneas after you died. HTH :)

Its going to decay into mush after you die, horrible, stinking, oozing, foetid, pestilent, mush. How is having a piece of that meat and tissue cut away to help someone get a better quality of life, and ease their passage through the world a violation? That's actually an improvement on what will happen to the body. The perfection of your pretty eyes is going to be despoiled by cruel nature, so you aren't going to be preserving anything by not improving someone else's life.

Plus if you die of anything other than old age you'll probably get autopsied anyway.

The laws need changing to prevent selfishness, and superstition, from impeding medicine and science.

No they don't, not at the cost of personal choice. Nobody is entitled to my body parts after I'm done using them. I can donate them or not as I choose. I, personally, choose to.
I think it might be better to change the law to default "yes" rather than to default "no" because most people don't care at all either way and will just go with the default. That in no way infringes on freedom of choice. But saying I can't choose to keep my own body whole when it's mine? No. It's mine and I decide what gets done with it.

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 08:08 am (UTC)(link)

Not being able to see sucks ass
I'm only near-sighted and that itself is annoying as shit. I can't drive a car, read a book, DRAW, do fucking anything without corrective lenses, so I can't even imagine how horrible my life would be if I needed new corneas

I'm glad you're okay with being a total asshole, but it doesn't make you special or cool

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
If I were a total asshole, I wouldn't be open to the idea of donating any of my organs, baby.

Trying to guilt trip a complete stranger into doing something they don't want to makes you the asshole, not them.

[identity profile] straydog733.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs*
Cool cool. It is a weird and unnerving subject, so I will definitely not be one to discount the emotional response. I personally would put giving a living person eyesight over my wishes and squicks about my body, but it's everyone's own decision.

I grew up with knowing that when my grandfather died, his kidneys, liver and corneas were donated (his other major organs were too damaged), the rest of his body donated to a school for med students to practice on, then finally cremated for my mom/aunt/uncle to spread as they wished. The idea really appealed to me as a child, and it's stuck over the years. I had pretty much the most pro-organ-donation setting possible, but realize that not everyone did. While I hope you change your mind, more luck to you, and thanks for clarifying your point.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, please, continue to excuse your own selfishness. Go on then. Because really, fuck you. Fuck you and your excuse of being superstitious. Yes, why should we make the life of someone who is living better by giving them something you can't even use anymore -- don't worry, that makes total sense. Asshole.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, fuck you too. People like you make me feel like specifying I don't want to donate any of my organs, because I don't give much of a shit either way really but I hate other people feeling entitled to my body in any motherfucking context.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Seems like this person is willing to part with the rest of their organs though. They can keep their eyes if they want to, can't they? Or are we now in the business of telling people they're selfish fucks for not donating "enough"?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Calm down anon. It's for them to decide and it doesn't make them selfish if they don't so please stop with the guilt trip.

And technically, in some cases it still doesn't make their lives better since there is a huge chance of the body actually rejecting the organ. And the meds they put them on doesn't exactly make them feel all that better as well.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a weird squick with regards to donating corneas that I don't have for other organs. Heart/kidneys/whatever = fine. Corneas = oh god not my eyes. D: It's irrational and I'm pretty sure I made myself check the 'corneas' box last time I re-registered as an organ donor cause obviously they are in need of corneas and rationally I know it's not any different from donating any other organ, but that was my decision and no-one should be obliged to do it if they don't want to. Organ donation in general is not a moral imperative as far as I'm concerned.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
In some religions the body needs to be whole (as in, the state it was at death) in order to be buried/for the soul to be considered eligible for the afterlife.

I am fairly certain there are some strict restrictions on what one can do with a body in Judaism, which I think was why their bodies were burned during the Holocaust, as it was unholy for Jews.

(If I'm wrong, here, feel free to correct me, it's been a damn long time since I read up on any WWII/Holocaust history)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
You're correct about the Jewish believes, I think, but I wanted to point out that they didn't burn the bodies for that reason(Nazis didn't even have that much knowledge about Jews). They did it because it was more efficient and made them easier to bury. Personally, that makes it more horrible.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I just remember (it was at the Museum of Tolerance, I think...?) being told that the term Holocaust meant burnt offerings or something, and the term was used because for Jews, burning of bodies was unholy. And I'm with you there, cold efficiency is practically worse than intention in this case. :(

[identity profile] fadeinthewash.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
which I think was why their bodies were burned during the Holocaust, as it was unholy for Jews.
I can't prove or disprove this, but I will posit that burning lots of bodies is less hassle than burying lots of bodies, so there would have been just as much practicality as a final 'fuck you' in doing so.
