[Supernatural, Florence + the Machine]

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Just... please, don't ruin Florence+The Machine for those of us who appreciate music for what it is.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, please. I haven't had a chance to listen to Ceremonials properly yet, what if now all I think about is bloody spn? ;__;

[identity profile] sister-wife.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
someone making a fandomsecret about a pairing is going to ruin the entire album for you?

...okay :/

If I have to deal with the fact that Muse is on the Twilight soundtracks then I think you can deal with one fandom secret about SPN and Florence+Machiene.

It's really not a big deal.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
What makes you think I don't appreciate the music for what it is?

I think Ceremonials is a brilliant, beautiful, emotional album, a perfect follow-up to Lungs (which has a few catchier songs, but also a few almost-duds). I've listened to it over and over, thought about it, analyzed it, felt it and breathed it and loved it.

I love how universal the lyrics and the melodies are, how Florence has admitted that the songs aren't that specifically symbolic, and how that seems like an invitation to interpret the songs yourself, which makes them even more meaningful. I first heard "Dog Days Are Over" when a period of long depression in my life came to a close and it became my anthem; I listened to Ceremonials and found it to be a beautiful, complicated, bright, subtle album.

The songs on it also just happen to remind me of the relationship (note: not necessarily the "'ship") between Dean and Castiel, which I find to be a beautiful, complicated, bright, subtle relationship.

LOL, SPN is the least of your worries when the woman in questions makes videos using Asian men in Blackface and invoked stupid Voodoo stereotypes and other problematic racist bullshit.

God, I hate the prevalence of their music in fandom. At one point, every. single. fanmix. had one of their songs on it. And that was when there was only their first album, so it meant running into the same songs, over and over again.

Now that's happening with their second cd too (which I only knew it was out because a new batch of songs by them showed up on famixes)

[identity profile] sister-wife.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
i casually ship destiel but i lean much more heavily towards wincest but i'm definitely going to have to agree with you

no light, no light is the most obvious but pretty much every song on the album reminds me of them so it's not just you

maybe this is just because i'm a compulsive fanmixer who obsessively analyses lyrics though

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
The first line that actually said "Castiel and Dean" to me was in All This And Heaven Too -- "And I would give anything for a moment just to understand" (or something to that effect; to lazy to look it up ATM). That just struck me as very Castiel.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Too long; COULDN'T read

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
er, i think those were the lyrics of the song, not the secret

(but yeah, at first glance i was all "woah, i'm not reading that, wtf-- wait"

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
On my first listen-to I cringed hard when the "bright blue eyes" bit popped up in "No Light", because a friend of mine loves Florence and Supernatural (which I dislike) and I knew she'd make the connection to Misha Collins' eyes and fangirl about it to me. And she did. D:

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
This band has been all over my radar lately. I'm gonna have to listen to it now.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
WORD. Well, "No Light, No Light" is a little more Charles/Erik to me, but those pairings have a lot of similarites!

[identity profile] shortcrust.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
TRUTH. The whole album to me is this big ball of complicated emotional hurt. Beautiful lyrics, associated with two heartbreakingly beautiful pairings. D:

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of songs sound like they were sung for them but I'm thinking it's because theirs is a typical tragic love story so it's not that odd.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-12-09 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
This was the point I was trying to make, yes.

[identity profile] emchelle.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I adore Florence + the Machine, independent of anything else, I just think Florence Welch is fucking fabulous. And I generally don't go looking for 'fannish' connections in my music.

But the Dean/Cas struck me, oh, about halfway through my first listen of 'Ceremonials', and now after playing it through about a hundred times over that sense is still there. It's just so...perfect.

[identity profile] ellethill.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? Boy, do I know where you're coming from.

Like you've said in a comment below, their music is gorgeous and at times highly personal, with themes that are almost universally applicable to all stories (hi, hello there, Mumford and Sons!); it's very likely that the fandom one's most involved in at the moment can influence one's interpretation of the songs. But damn if I don't blink at how many of the songs on the new album can so easily be applied to Dean/Cas (viewed as a romantic relationship or not).

I've yet to listen carefully to the whole album, but right now All this and heaven too, Seven devils, No light, no light, and What the water gave me are the ones I associate with them the most(...in that narrative order, even; sigh. what can you do. )

[identity profile] ellethill.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
...and when I wrote below, I meant above :D

Thanks, OP! You have just made What the Water Gave Us, which is all-around depressing, hilarious.

[identity profile] fiducia.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No I get that! That one song that mentions bright blue eyes especially. I wouldn't call it being 'that fan', though. You just found an interesting correlation. Good job!
