Well from my personal experience, being an American female abroad gets me a lot of attention. Same for all of the women I've ever traveled with (mother, sisters, friends, etc). Maybe it's just the countries I've gone to but, without fail, I got hit on by a random guy in the street at least twice a day. The fact that I didn't speak their language didn't even matter. It was a bit ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It definitely depends on the country. I know that one of the warnings they gave students at my college who were thinking about studying abroad at any of our supported programs was, "Be careful because sometimes the locals will try to pick up American girls at the airport."

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That happens to women from other nationalities too and anyone who looks foreign can get some kind of special atention in most countries, from side way glances, to try get hit, etc.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea I'm sure. But I try to speak from personal experience and not say "all women" whenever I can help it. So I was just speaking for myself and people I know right then :)

This. Being American has very little to do with it. It's usually being a Western-looking female in non-Western countries that gets you that male attention, or just looking exotic by the local standards. The combination of American and abroad alone won't get you anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
no, being an american female in europe, especially Italy, France, Spain, will get you unwanted attention, like, more so than just the regular everyday unwanted attention.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, please. You're full of self-important shit.

~Brit living in Spain who emphatically does not see American girls harassed any less than any other non-Spanish white.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Which part of Spain? I travel back and forth between Tenerife and Madrid, and after 10+ years I can definitely say American women get hit on a lot. I've even got one guy friend who constantly tries to hit on these girls with his piss-poor English. Mind you, most of the guys I see doing this are in their early twenties (and I'm not saying all guys this age act like that), so maybe it's just a very recent thing.
From what I've seen and heard, the harassing gets worse for American girls 'cause they don't know how to say back, and the guys don't care since (usually) they can't understand the words, even if they definitely understand the meaning behind them. And compared to people from other countries, Americans do get the worst of it because people have this consensus that Americans are arrogant and uncultured. So when an American girl finally fights back, she immediately becomes "free game" and deserves to be teased and harassed. I've seen this happen to local girls and girls from other countries, it's happened to me, but like I said, imho Americans get the worst of it.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Funny. That is not what...

A) The Peace Corps warned (in detail) about.
B) My Cuban, Colombian, and Argentinian Spanish professors warned me about (the Cuban did summer trips to Spain with the studens, the Colombian to Mexico. They also talked about their own cultures).
C) Most American women who travel/live abroad have said.

It varies by country, yes. But it isn't a matter of 'Oh, American women so hot!' but more 'Hey, on TV American women are easy!' and many times that is the majority of their info on us, depending on region, education level, and a couple other factors.

I'm just sayin'. From all the first and second hand accounts, it IS a thing. Maybe you should research before getting on your own conceited high horse?

Oh, and most of these women and people who talk about it will also detail all the amazing and wonderful people they have met, with the harassment being just something to deal with and be aware of.

But the OP's response is awesome. I am so stealing it for when I teach abroad.

Oh, please. You're full of self-important shit.

Wow, telling women that they're lying about the harassment they've observed and experienced. There's someone here who's full of self-important shit, and it isn't her.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-24 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, when I lived in Europe I got more attention than the other non-American girls. I think being American had a lot to do with it.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
No, being a white female might get you attention. But being American? No. If anything, foreigners find that offputting. I don't know how many times a foreign guy has lost interest in flirting with me when he learned I was American. Or how many times someone has made a disparaging remark upon discovering I was American.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
In all of my overseas travelling I learned that as an American woman I'm an easy target, because it's assumed that
A) I'm stupid
B) I'm wealthy
C) I'm easy
D) I don't speak the language
E) I'm gullible.

When I backpacked through Europe I was told by a huge amount of people to pretend I was Canadian, because people would respect me more, and I'd get hit on/taken advantage of/manipulated less.

"unwanted attention" doesn't always mean sexual.

I went to Italy and Greece with my parents when I was sixteen. I didn't wear makeup and was in t-shirts and jeans during the trip, and I STILL got attention from men on the street. Like, even right in front of my fucking mom and dad. One guy in Rome even took me by the wrist to try and talk to me, actually seperating me from my parents for a few seconds until they realized I wasn't walking beside them anymore. I was too afraid to call out to them.

I've had opportunities to go to Italy since then (it's been over a decade), but the thought of dealing with that kind of stuff again makes me feel panicky. I will never go back.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
God this.

I've only been in Italy, and Spain a couple days myself across my life, but in that tiny period the amount of just absolutely unacceptable behaviour I got exposed to was shocking.

Like the dictionary definition of rape culture.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
When I was in Italy I got hit on by a thirty year old guy outside a cafe. I was a twelve year old on a Girl Guide holiday, with a bunch of other Guides. Not even a joke.

[identity profile] onetracks.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
if her nationality was that obvious, the guy in question wouldn't have cycled through languages trying to find one she'd use. ergo, it's likely that she's white and abroad in a country that is predominately not white.

Ahahaha... no. I'm sure you feel that there's some sort of enlightened social point you're trying to make here, but, as most everyone with any firsthand experience has pointed out, you're very wrong.
