What's being an American abroad got to do with it?

[identity profile] cyprith.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed it was meant to imply "I am out of my element in a new, strange place."

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Which wouldn't get her unwanted attention. I'm assuming she means abroad some place where a woman of 'American' looks, presumably white, stands out.

[identity profile] mefistofluffies.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with the series, but what she shouted looks like a nonsense phrase. And the guy was trying to find a language he could speak to her in, so yeah.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically you're right...but I like talking about Skyrim so here's the explanation: It's from the Elder Scrolls game Skyrim. It's the most famous of the dragon-language "shouts" (like spells but different) because it was in the trailer. The effect is to blow the target back.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
pretty sure it's the most famous shout because it's the first one you get...

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well from my personal experience, being an American female abroad gets me a lot of attention. Same for all of the women I've ever traveled with (mother, sisters, friends, etc). Maybe it's just the countries I've gone to but, without fail, I got hit on by a random guy in the street at least twice a day. The fact that I didn't speak their language didn't even matter. It was a bit ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It definitely depends on the country. I know that one of the warnings they gave students at my college who were thinking about studying abroad at any of our supported programs was, "Be careful because sometimes the locals will try to pick up American girls at the airport."

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That happens to women from other nationalities too and anyone who looks foreign can get some kind of special atention in most countries, from side way glances, to try get hit, etc.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea I'm sure. But I try to speak from personal experience and not say "all women" whenever I can help it. So I was just speaking for myself and people I know right then :)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-18 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Being American has very little to do with it. It's usually being a Western-looking female in non-Western countries that gets you that male attention, or just looking exotic by the local standards. The combination of American and abroad alone won't get you anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
no, being an american female in europe, especially Italy, France, Spain, will get you unwanted attention, like, more so than just the regular everyday unwanted attention.

Ahahaha... no. I'm sure you feel that there's some sort of enlightened social point you're trying to make here, but, as most everyone with any firsthand experience has pointed out, you're very wrong.

Exoticism, plus TV's taught them that American women will jump into bed at the drop of a hat.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
No.

Kindly do not fucking tar all the other countries of the world with the same brush.

In fact, you're more likely to get a goddamn lecture in Europe than you are be hit on for being 'exotic'.

Yes, thank you for your lovely and utterly useless bit of trivia. Aren't we all enlightened now.

The question was: "why was it that the OP was getting unwanted attention because she was American?" I responded with what was the most likely answer. If you have a better reason for why the OP being American is subjecting her to unwanted male attention, kindly say it.

[identity profile] blitzs-fighters.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, come on, I doubt it has anything to do with her being American as opposed to her being foreign, as a million other people have said. Or what, all of us non-Americans who get as much shit in some places don't exist?

ugh, this. i've only been to eastern countries, so perhaps it is different in europe. but i don't know how many times i flat-out got asked "do you want sex?" from men (comeplete strangers, btw) who thought that just because i was an american girl, i must be "loose".

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2011-12-19 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
TV taught them that Westerner women will jump into bed.

A French female journalist got sexually assaulted while filming the riots in Egypt, just like an American female journalist was raped under similar circumstances, and she said it's because 1) the guys are sexually frustrated and 2) they're think that westerner women are easy.

This being told, being French I got hit on by an Irish guy who insisted, upon the logics that I was on holidays, and "holidays are made for fun". Also : woman on holidays alone = wanting to get loose away from home where nobody will judge her, in his mind (and in the mind of a female colleague of mine, because that's what she did, so I gather it's a widespread opinion).

Maybe American women are warned about this because they are not used to this so need more of a warning.
But since that guy tried many languages on the OP, it's definitely NOT because she's American.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"But since that guy tried many languages on the OP, it's definitely NOT because she's American."

Excellent point.

Also I have never heard of the stereotype that American women are supposed to be especially "loose" in Europe. I can't speak for Italy, France or Greece, but I've spent holidays in all three of those countries and never ever did guys hit more on Americans than other foreign girls.

I'm living in Holland.
If anything, American tourists think we're all drug-dealing prostitutes over here and talk to us like they could buy us with a few dollars.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
As many have said, it varies place to place. The areas you listed I have not heard much warning about in comparison to, say, South America (in general) or some countries in Africa. And as I said, I have been given these warning spefically about the dangers of being a American woman (on top of just being a woman) by people who were NOT even American in their origin.

And I am sorry for the jerks who assume stuff like that. However, I would like to point out that saying 'American women have a poor stereotype which encourages harassment in some countries' is a far cry from saying 'all of x nationality treat everyone like shit.'

Just sayin'. It drives me crazy when people who act so damn culturally enlightened pull even worse shit but because it is x nationality it's 'okay'.

I am also not saying that other women of other countries have it any better or any worse, just that there is a certain stereotype which may be dangerous in certain countries/situations/regions. I imagine every nationality has some added danger in certain countries because of varying social, cultural, and historical tension/representation.

She's probably either white in an Asian country or blonde in Eastern or Southern Europe or Asia. (Possibly Africa, as well, but that's less common destination for term abroad). Basically, she sticks out like an exotic foreigner.
