i tried getting into hot gimmick, I thought the art was kinda slick. But I got spoiled on the ending and I'm GLAD i didnt waste my time on it

I also read Hot Gimmick for the art (I actually finished the whole thing, though -- even worse, I got my sister into it but that was before I finished the series and now I feel pretty guilty about that)

Miki Aihara's older comics have better art IMO. I don't think any of them have really been translated though aside from Tokyo Boys & Girls. But still, her 90s style was much better.

[identity profile] fickletastictot.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hot Gimmick should have been renamed Hot Mess tbh. I would have thrown it against the wall if I didn't actually read it off the internet instead.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I read it through and enjoyed it to a certain degree, but I also seethed while I was reading. I guess it's like they said in one Glee secret recently, that they hate the show but continue to watch it anyway.

Honestly, I can't say it was any worse than every other creepy shoujo romance manga.

[identity profile] ionizable.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
god, i could not understand why all my friends in high school loved this comic. i felt like there was something wrong with me for despising it bc i didn't know how to articulate why it squicked me out :(

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah OP, that series is pretty much shit. But it's like watching a soap opera, the drama is entertaining if you can ignore the awkward "morality" of the characters and how none of the plot makes sense or how the characters don't really act like real human beings. But, like I said, it's fun to laugh at with friends and enjoy :D

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Man, Hot Gimmick. I loved that series, outside the ending, and I read the short alternate novel and prefer that one. :P Though both endings are sqicks to begin with.

But yes. Hot Gimmick is trash. Fun trash, but trash. It's a train wreck you can't help but to semi like and keep going back to.

[identity profile] micans.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of those things that's a constant presence in my local library, but I've never bothered to check it out. Is it really offensive or something?

SPOILERS for Hot Gimmick

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Very abridged summary of the massive problems with this series: There are three male leads/love interests. Two are MAJORLY abusive assholes and the other is the female lead's (Hatsumi) adopted brother who grew up with her from very young childhood (Westermarck effect? What Westermarck effect?) and is creepy in his own way, though not *quite* as bad as the other two. The first abusive asshole wins Hatsumi in the end, who is completely spineless and passive and puts up with all his crap. The second abusive asshole is a childhood friend who turns out to be out for revenge against Hatsumi's father, so he tries to get Hatsumi gang-raped on film. SHE STILL TRIES TO 'HELP' AND 'UNDERSTAND' HIM AFTER THIS.

tl;dr: abuse is romantic and means a person really cares for you.

I call Hatsumi "doormat-chan"... It's like the author went out of her way to make her absolutely submissive...

VAGUE SPOILERS for Hana Yori Dango, Fushigi Yugi

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, what is it about shoujo and gang rape? Was there like a time when it was really being pushed as a trope, like how all urban fantasy now is contractually obligated to have a love triangle? Because I was reading Hana Yori Dango a while back and that had an almost gang rape too, and then I got spoiled for the guy who set up the almost gang rape ending up with the main character and ragequit the manga.

And then there was Yui in Fushigi Yugi (which was a fake out but whatever), and just... why so much almost gang rape, shoujo?

I'm pretty sure that shit started in the 90s
Though I wonder why
It is troubling

Maybe I'm just a depressing thinker, but it just makes me worried about Japanese culture in regards to that sort of thing, eugh. Well, shoujo manga as a whole makes me worry. So many abusive/possesive/controlling dudes, it's like half of them are mini-twilights.

Re: SPOILERS for Hot Gimmick

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I never thought Shinogu (the brother) was creepy at all, although I agree that his feelings for Hatsumi are problematic given they are brother and sister (even if they aren't blood related). Still, in a comic where all the other dudes are abusive and he's the only guy who actually cares about Hatsumi and treats her with some ounce of respect, I had to sympathize with him a little

It's impossible to ship Hatsumi with anyone in this comic, though

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's about a really meek girl and a really dominant guy. I guess you could construe it as anti-feminist or whatever, but honestly, I don't think the author meant for it to be taken like "This is how every relationship SHOULD be." It's just wish-fulfillment for people who are into that kind of thing.

So no, I don't think it's offensive, but I can see why it rubs people the wrong way.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
oh i fucking LOVED it while i was reading it. hot gimmick is one of those things that i look back on and think "OH GOD WHY DID I WASTE SO MUCH TIME/MONEY ON THIS." but i really enjoyed it. i think, like others have been saying, that it's got this soap-opera-like quality that really keeps you reading. like there was always some new dramatic development that had me dying to know what happened next. and i also thought the art was really cute.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
tbh this was my experience with Twilight! I totally read it in a vacuum-- I'd never heard about it before, there was no indication that it was "big" (I was living in Japan and it hadn't hit over there yet), but it was the only non-math-text book in my international bookstore that I hadn't read yet, so I bought the first book. For about $20 (import fees!). And then bought the rest. The entire series, including the last two in hardcover, cost well over $100.

$100 I can never, ever get back.

But for some reason I loved that shit while I was reading it. /shrug

I definitely shipped Ryoki and Hatsumi together real hard and then I realized years later that. It kind of. Really. Wasn't ok. Oops.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
lmao i shipped her with azusa which is... definitely even worse.. yeah

[identity profile] jedishampoo.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
If this is the one with the annoyingly abusive love interest guy and the wimpy girl, and I think I skipped ahead to the end to see if it was worth it and it wasn't, then I do not fit your view, OP, 'cause i hated it so much I couldn't get more than a few chapters in and sold my copy lickety-split. :) But ah, well, people likes what they likes.

[identity profile] trashsocialite.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Just here to say hot gimmick secret, yay.I don't ge the hate for it and I generally enjoyed it. All her work is like that but I love it and her art style. It's so guilty pleasure material.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Don't... get? I mean, it's one thing to like it, but you can at least get why others would be pretty offended or creeped out, right?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-20 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I love that manga it's so funny and addicting.

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the series is legitimately gripping for the first three volumes. Hooks a lot of people early on. But I wouldn't say that critics are just feeling guilty for liking it. HG compounds a lot of the more problematic themes and issues of shoujo manga, and turns the volume up to 10. It's worth addressing it as a pronounced example.

That said, it was entertaining as hell, and had me craving more with each volume. Sadly, it sort of dies out towards the end.
