The new commenting system on LJ sucks, I think we can all agree (and all the other prospective design changes seem to be speeding it down the path of no return). Knowing LJ, it's probably not going to change no matter how much anybody complains, and as this comm is heavily based on user comments, it's probably time to consider moving. Dreamwidth is the closest to LJ's old format and has a large fandom base, and seems the best alternative for now.

So -

[Poll #1804842]

Other thoughts?

(As a note, I'm completely willing to either stay or move. Updating the comm is easy enough for me either way.)

ETA - It's not only about subject lines. Others have written up potential problems better than I could:

http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=6261682#t6261682
ETA 4 - http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html?thread=7952050#t7952050

ETA 2 - For those worried about possibly needing to make DW accounts to comment, if a move happens: you don't need one! OpenID will let you comment as an LJ user (in the same way Facebook users can comment on LJ).

ETA 3 - For those worried about missing updates: I can crosspost to LJ to let you know a post is up, I don't mind that (it's like a minute of extra work, no problem) - if the DW move happens though, the comments would be over there.

ETA 5 - Apparently, this is what we're getting next year.

Would it be possible to have a new vote between "no" and "wait until Saturday? I was reading some of the links provided, and if at all possible, I'd like to change my vote. having a run-off vote between those two options might be helpful?

If F!S moves, I will go with it. My biggest problem with leaving LJ is that the communities that I follow are all active here. The changes that LJ is making are legitimately making it difficult to do business here, so to speak, so we might as well get started now. New year, new internet home, etc.

am i the only one who likes the update? anon icons are very qt and it actually helps me read longass threads better.

btw i don't care dreamwidth is fine too

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I neither like nor dislike it. There isn't really any difference beyond a few buttons in different places as far as my usage is concerned.

I don't see the changes as a big problem and i don't want to have to go to a different site just to read fandom secrets. Please don't change!

I voted wait until Saturday, though in all honesty, I think we should give it at least a week. Saturday is a little too close, and what with Christmas etc., I'm sure more people would be lost in the move than otherwise would be. Also, as someone said above me, I think we should cross-posting to lj, with a link to the DW post. That way people can continue checking their flist, as I'm sure most people will still have communities etc. that they check over here. And yeah, it helps reduce the amount of people who get lost in the move- that's my main concern.

IDK... the new commenting system seems pretty self-explanatory... you can either comment as yourself or click "switch" to go Anon. Don't really see a reason to move.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not trying to be wanky, but I honestly don't understand why some people would apparently find it so horrible to move and wouldn't be willing to read fandomsecrets on a different site. [livejournal.com profile] technophile would be willing to crosspost so you'd still see f!s updates on your flist, and you can comment on DW with your LJ account so you wouldn't have to make any new accounts.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. In the long run, I feel like it would be better. I don't see the difference from visiting this site and switching to another site. Especially one that allows anon commentating and is always set to public viewing. No one would have to make a new account either. If you usually post anon you can view it without being signed into anything. In fact, it's much more stable than LJ in that regard. And for people who think it would take more time to sign in with OpenID, I call bullshit. You'd waste more time waiting for this new LJ system to load. I think people are just being stubborn and making excuses. I bet these are the same people who shun Tumblr.

Switching to an S2 style seems to have helped for other comms, those still have subject titles and preview and none of this terrible scrolling whenever you comment. With a bit of tinkering a few of them, like [livejournal.com profile] xmen_firstkink have even managed something pretty similar to the old default, you could try pming them for the css code. Also, LJ is apparently planning to come out with an S2 style in the near future that will be just like the old default. Backwards as hell but if it restores function...

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
LJ is apparently also planning to make S2 styles like this too at some point in the future, so idk. (Granted, it's supposedly going to be in a year or so, but still.)

the thing is though that with the shit lj just pulled, moving to dreamwidth would mean less of a change in the general experience of reading/commenting on f!s. and i say this as someone who hates switching websites.

I don't want to sign up for either a Dreamwidth account OR OpenID. The lack of subject lines stinks but it's not that big a deal. I'd rather see the comm switch to a custom CSS or S2 style.

But... Apparently (and forgive me if someone else has mentioned this), you can fix the comment display issue by:

(for your own journal): going to journal>journal style>customize your theme; then scroll down to find "disable customized comment pages for your journal" and set it to NO.

(for overall comment views): going to profile>settings and clicking on the display tab; then check off "view all journals and communities in my own style."

I'm open minded and was willing to give this new change a try. After playing around with it for a a couple hours it is quite annoying... When I expand a section it takes a lot longer to open for whatever reason. I don't have a slow computer nor is my internet slow, but that stupid loading circle will stay there for a good 5-10 seconds. Doesn't seem that long, but when you're going through a big list of comments, such as FS, it's a long ass time when you add it up. The site seems to load a lot slower too. Like I said, I don't have a slow computer and never had this problem before. It seems to be the way it's coded and how the information is fetched. I am annoyed about the preview function being removed. I don't use it a lot, but sometimes when I'm not sure about a tag if I haven't used it for awhile it's nice to see just to make sure it works. Especially anonymously since you can't edit your comment. The only redeeming quality I found was it was nice to have new comments marked with a little icon. But the lag is getting to become a deal breaker for me. Personally I'd rather not deal with it.

Forgive me if this has already been asked or mentioned (I really can't be bothered to wait to expand all the comments...), but if FS does move to DW will the site still be kept up here? Like will the archived secrets remain here for viewing?

some of the changes are good, some are just outright bad. I honestly don't see lj changing anything but I think waiting a few days to see what happens might be a good idea.

I'm going to say leave - the secrets that will inevitably lead to wank always cause such huge threads and now that I see the thread link has been removed (what the fuck LJ?!) I cannot see myself being able to navigate a list of comments over 20 without pulling out my hair.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The thread link is still there for me. Hover on the blue part of the upper comment and link and collapse pop up.

Look, a subject!

They're there, at least for some, but they don't have the same functionality. They're in the body of the comment instead of the header bar and are hidden when the comment is collapsed, and you can't click on them to view the comment's thread. They're basically useless now.

I tried DreamWidth and didn't like it.

But I tried following four or five conversation threads at F!S with this new layout and found it IMPOSSIBLE. I don't even get how you can navigate some of those comment threads without the 'parent' link, and that's assuming that the 'expand' button is even going to cooperate with you - which I doubt it will even 70% of the time. Combine that with a lack of subject line and no more preview or spellcheck and I'm much more willing to figure out the ins and outs of DreamWidth than stick with LJ. I really hope they fix it, but failing that, I'm voting DW.

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2011-12-21 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in the confused books as functionally it seems the same. Just looks very different minus subejct header (and I like the look. The expand button is even working for me for once)

Even if it did change and FS moved, I wouldn't follow. FS is convenient to me on LJ because I use this site so often. Dreamwidth I don't have an account for and just would never remember to check/consider/follow a link there. Frankly, I wouldn't bother. I like FS, but not enough to check an additional site just for FS

Yeah, not following. For me, more change to use DW than the change here on LJ. I don't like change~ :s

(Anonymous) 2011-12-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So ... you bother to click on the LJ cut to see a FS post but you wouldn't bother to click on a fake cut leading to DW? (Also, as has been pointed out a hundred times in this post, you can comment there with your LJ account.)

I've already moved craptons of stuff over to DW. I have no problem with moving more... Also, if F!S moves over there, maybe there will actually be a decent amount of fandom over there that isn't an exclusive "we write about SJ issues in fandom" club. I don't have a problem with that, but DW fandom is really...limiting.
