I think a lot of the desire to "prove" that K/S is canon stems from all the suggestive quotes from Gene Roddenberry and excerpts from the TMP novelization? Which doesn't really address your secret about being annoyed, I realize (and I agree that RABID shippers of any kind can be off-putting) but I think K/S is an unusual circumstance where there is a lot of perceived evidence in favor of the ship, thus, the fans that set out to prove it.

[identity profile] xxxendles.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I think that the need to prove it canon stems from the wish to accepted as "real fans". Roddenberry's statements are just the fuel to that fire. The truth is that it could be canon an all over the place and there would still be people who dislike it and dislike the fans.

And in all honesty, people forget that there's so much evidence against the pairing too. One thing ethey like to forget is that Kirk's a ladies man. Yeah he can bisexual or whatever, but there's a word for it: cheating. Doesn't bode too well with relationships.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's awkward. In ANY fandom. (and I ship the hell out of K/S)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
IA

I wish fandom would get over the current hang up it has on everything being "canon-approved". It never used to be like this, once upon a time canon was stretched, mangled, beaten, and left to weep in a back alley in the name of fun. You'd never be able to write something like Banned From Argo these days.

[identity profile] xxxendles.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts, word to word, exactly. Who the fuck cares if it's canon? If it were there would still be haters, there would still be people pissed on at the fans of the pairing. There's a lot of evidence for them, true, and it's nice that it's not pairing made out of thin air, but most of the shippers really gotta face the fact that there a lot of evidence against it too.

I utterly adore this pairing, actually I'm fucking obsessed with it, and I still hate how people have to prove it canon NO MATTER WHAT. If I hear "you can't change the sky from blue to green" bull shit one more time I'm gonna punch a kitten.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of torn, because while I do enjoy the hell out of the Ship's Closet and think it brings up some interesting points, I don't necessarily care if it's canon (because K/S is lovely anyways). However, a lot of those interesting points are really valid, and I think that a close reading of ST shows that there was a lot of pretty interesting intentional stuff between them (the fact that Gene Roddenberry made the word t'hy'la, for example, is really interesting). I think rabid fans of any kind are pretty off-putting, though.

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. This is where my hate for Remus/Sirius in HP fandom comes from. And yes, I know there are "reasonable" shippers. But they tend to get drowned out by the idiots in any case.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, me too. The whole "almost canon" thing always pissed me off. I never liked the pairing much (it was always James/Sirius for me), but it was the shippers that turned mild dislike to actual hate.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
spirkers?

really?

you make me embarrassed for the fandom.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
What are you thoughts on Kock?

;)

[identity profile] solo-by-choice.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely agree. I think Brittany is hilarious, but K/S doesn't have to be canon for me to enjoy it!

Though sometimes I can't enjoy it anyway because I feel bad about Bones being left out :(

[identity profile] miss-makiba.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I understand perfectly, and feel the same way. :) It shouldn't matter that a ship is canon, because people will ship it anyway; I half suspect the surge in "it must be canon!" (and there was definitely a surge) has to do with some smug S/U shippers. Not the entire cause, but I'm sure it's a ship war thing, in any case ("My ship is more valid than yours! Yours was only in the one movie! Mine was _____!")

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. It's very much a ship war thing. And as someone who ships Kirk/Spock AND Spock/Uhura and tends to live by "ship and let ship" anyway, it's very depressing. *sigh* Why can't we all get along with eachother?

[identity profile] htebazytook.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't have to be canon to be awesome obviously, but trying to prove your pairing is kind of the point of slashing, I thought.

Sure Brittany is super convicted and ngl it does irk me when she gets all "ZERO PERCENT CHANCE OF ANOTHER INTERPRETATION, HERE" but the fun of fanfic is you get to reinterpret what is presented by the canon, so I'll just write my stuff and other people can write theirs and we'll live happily ever after despite any canon legitimacy or lack thereof

(Anonymous) 2011-12-23 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think it makes sense for shippers of non-canon pairings to try to legitimize and rationalize their ship because people question the validity of pairings based on subtext.

I know, right? The little anime nerd in me squeals over this piece of fanart every. single. time.

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see a problem with people trying to highlight subtext. Especially because (in my headcanon) the 23rd century has TOTAL different social constructs of sexuality and relationship dynamics. It's fun to think about. Personally, I enjoyed the little bits of fanservice Roddenbury and other writers threw at us ("t'hy'la", namely)and think that, as long as nobody takes it to seriously, reveling over scenes which can be taken as slashy (Backrub ftw!) is a ton of fun!

There are some really rabid, scary fangirls who ship this pairing, though, I will admit. And they do kinda make it awkward for the rest of us :(

Brittany and the Ship's Closet gets on my nerves, I won't lie. It's a bad, bad, bad attempt at GLBT film/literary theory. Nothing is worse than a badly organized, random, unintellectual "argument" that thinks its smart, logical, and intellectual. Nothing personal on her-she seems like a badass chick. I'd probably like her if I met her in real life. But I dislike the whole "THERE IS NOOOO OTHER INTERPRETATION!" when actually, yeah, there are many different interpretations of the scenes she analyzes. That's the fun part! Kudos to her for putting it out there, though. I definitely respect her for having the gumption to do that.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of "Brittany and the Ship's Closet." Should I check it out or will it just bother me?

now my actual reply

If fandom has taught me anything, it’s that canon doesn’t matter. So I do wonder about the many who try to prove that KS was meant to be canon. I never thought it mattered. Like someone said in the comments, it might be a result to the new ST movie and how S/U got to be canon. Someone mentioned that because S/U got to be canon, the S/U shippers went on about how their pairing is more valid than others. I’ve never seen THEM with that mentality so that was news to me. I just never thought canon mattered. The point, well to some of fic was to rewrite canon. So why should it matter if a pairing is or isn't?

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2011-12-23 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed! Because K/S is my favorite pairing (though not at all the ONLY pairing I like!)I've spent more time in that section of the fandom than any other. It's a pity, though, because from what I've seen of the S/U fandom (at least on livejournal) they seem to be incredibly humble, decent people. Not that the K/Sers can't be lovely too! Like I said above, most of us are pretty nice and it's a few crazies who ruin it for all of us.
