THIS. Even in the Ritchie fandom the Irene hate annoyed me, but at least in the BBC show we have no reason to suspect that they're going way off from canon with her.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, she's a dominatrix instead of an actress, for one.

And I guess you haven't seen the clip with her naked (or at least topless) and coming on to Sherlock?

Hell, forget "ruining my ship", I'm pissed off that this is how they chose to introduce her (the "topless" scene was in the first trailer that actually showed her). She's supposed to be smart and probably powerful... and they introduce her showing her damn tits.

In the Victorian era, being an actress was frowned upon by certain circles, and pretty much seen as being a hooker. For it to have the same effect/impact, they have to modernise the job/career she has. To some, being a dominatrix is disgusting and seen as a high-class hooker. And to do her job as a dominatrix, she has to get naked...

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No she doesn't. You can whip, spank, etc. a person just as well while clothed, Hell, I'd think that keeping clothed would work even better, since you being clothed woe the person your dominating is naked put you in an even more dominant position.

And again, part of my problem is that this is how they introduced the character to us. Not doing something smart, or clever, or amazing, but... being naked.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I can be smart and clever when I'm naked, too. Are you now concerned that Irene will be characterized as a mere sex object? I hope Moffatt will do a little more homework than that and portray her as the jill-of-all-trades that she is.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying she can't be. What I'm saying is, when the time came to show clips of Irene for tv, they choose cheesecake over intellect.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Except I don't actually think that is what you're saying. And I think you should just let it go until the episode airs.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
re: Ok, then what am I saying?

Who do you think I am, Sherlock Holmes?

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Adler was an opera signer and adventuress, never an actress...Am I forgetting something?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
what the hell do you think an opera singer is, if not an actress during that time?

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Fine, no need to jump the hell down my throat.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
And to do her job as a dominatrix, she has to get naked...

what fucking bad BDSM fanfiction are you reading?

many, MANY dominatrixes don't HAVE to get naked to be a Domme.

and an actor/actress doesn't need to be naked to get the sexuality of a character across. not if they're any good or their director is any good.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-25 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
seriously? I was hoping Moffat would do her justice, but clearly not.

I also like how in the books Irene was an impossibly minor character (one short story, period), while every adaptation has jumped on her as possible love interest.

I was hoping Moffat would do her justice, but clearly not.

*snorts*

Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, this. :/ I already feel like she's going to be the River of Sherlock and I hope I'm wrong.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if Irene is absolutely obsessed with Sherlock and has no real life outside of the days she sees him and would be completely happy to be thought to be his murderer (because she gets nighttime nookie, LOL) and be ~mysterious, then we'll know.

With Moffat's record for writing women? I don't have much hope.

[identity profile] simmy549.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
the episode hasn't actually aired yet, so there's still plenty of time for him to do her justice. We've only seen a small clip so far.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny, I hardly ever hear people make the same complaint about James Moriarty.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
James Moriarty has a penis. Therefore, according to the laws of fandom, he's exempt.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Or it could be the fact that there's never been an adaptation where he's depicted as Sherlock's love interest...

Oh, and for the record: I have seen fic where Sherlock ends up screwing Jim, and I hate it even more than him being with Irene. So he's not exempt as far as I'm concerned.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That clip you mention, the first thing she says, "I could cut myself slapping that face... would you like me to try? *CHOMP*"

I thought it was pretty clear she's going to be a sexual person, and what with also the obvious eye contact going on between the two, she's going to be very challenging. I don't see how her toplessness lessens the latter.

Then again, I do like my equal opportunity fan service anyways.

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, really? Clearly I'm not as caught up on the new info and promo material as I thought I was. I always reserve judgment until I actually see stuff instead of freaking out over officially released info, but that does sound potentially very disappointing.

It would hardly be the first objectionable way female characters have been written on Sherlock, though, so I can't help but still feel that all the anger being directed at the angle they're taking with Irene indicates some fans have screwed-up priorities and irrational investment in the slash, even if others are actually fans of the character and legitimately concerned about what's being done with her.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
She's supposed to be smart and probably powerful... and they introduce her showing her damn tits.

You are aware that Steven Moffat runs this show, right?

Because honestly this introduction doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man is that where they're going with her? Goddamnit, I knew not to trust Moffat. I just thought since he wasn't the only writer she'd have a chance.
