I agree, but I wish Addie hadn't been killed off.

Me too. I started watching the show for Jessica Lange and Frances Conroy but I came out so surprised at how great the actress playing Adelaide was. I am glad however she didn't die on the grounds of the house.

why would he get hated for Downs Syndrome characters, that is a real disease. Unlike the fake condition known as...

Morgellons.

Thing about a lot of shows is they're either comedies where Downs would be played for laughs, or procedurals that take place in the working world, and it just doesn't work to have someone with Downs or anything holding a gun. =/

[identity profile] lacunarity.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that they kept these characters in as reoccurring ones rather than one-offs (so how's Rachel's voice lessons with the paralyzed guy going?) but I wish they were given bigger roles than the "good-hearted person with Downs Syndrome who is wiser than the other characters." A little depth and a few humanizing imperfections would really make Becky a better developed character.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
how is becky good-hearted? she's sue's right-hand man

[identity profile] lacunarity.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, good point. Maybe it's just because to me it seems like she's just imitating Sue's behavior because she looks up to her, rather than acting like her own character. But you're right, that could be subjective.

I think they've been pretty good with her character considering the fail with which they done other sensitive issues. I also, think Becky's far more her own character when we see her without Sue. I loved that toast line, tbh.

****SPOILERS****

But she is getting an episode where she tried to date/have sex with Artie. I don't know whether this will be well-done or offensive, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
knowing Glee I'm going to have to lean towards "offensive". at least slightly. prove me wrong, Glee!

[identity profile] oohasparklie.livejournal.com 2012-01-04 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. Becky's an asshole. I don't know what you're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. That's actually one of the biggest redeeming qualities this show has. ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
must agree with this (WARNING: rant of a non-english-native-speaker ahead)
ever since I was a child I had this little phobia of people with mental disabilities, it had to do with me being bullied by a special kid when I was growing up, so I had a lot of troubles being even in the same room with one of them.
I started watching AHS with a little apprehension because of Adelaide, but her story make me realize that they are people too, or at least that not all of them were out to get me. So, I have to thank him because that show made me less of a awful person. It made me confront my fears.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though I've given up on Glee, damn I love Becky.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish that shows that do portray characters with Downs wouldn't always choose to go the "usually cheerful, nice and independent person, just like you and me, and btw yes, we do imply that all people with Downs are exactly like this" route. My brother's on the other end of the scale and god, it annoys me so much when all I see on TV is something my family will never have, and that what the audience sees is implied to be the norm with Downs people. It isn't.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
God, I envy you. I have to deal with my asshole-ish and clingy family members because they are normal people. If you've got an unpleasant and clingy brother then you can dump him in a home and walk away clean. It's an upside of having a 'tard as a relative, asylums and loony bins can take care of them for you. Just get your 'rents to dump him in one and tell everyone "they tried so hard", most folks'll still treat you all like saints.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of want to punch you in the face for this comment.

'tard was pushing it but you really fell into Try Hard Junction with 'rents. the only people who ever use 'rents are 40 year olds trying to write what they imagine a cool 14 year old would say. And your efforts weren't even for anything funny, so it looks like you're going straight from Try Hard to Fail City.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know her name but the downs character in American Horror Story is not usually cheerful, she's in a pretty abusive situation and acts accordingly (frustrated tantrums and such) they also show her limitations pretty clearly.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I do agree with this. I think by showing them being 100% nice, you are missing the real struggles that come with the limitation. One of my co-workers suffers from Downs Syndrome, and although he is generally cheerful I feel the constant need to bite my tongue around him as he has no concept of being in a work place or of wanting to truly help his co-workers. He takes constant breaks, will only do the jobs he likes (leaving the worst of things to everyone else), and there is this constant tension between us and his coworkers of how much should we say and confront him on because of his condition.

I know that not all people with Down Syndrome are like this, but I think the media belittles the families that struggle with dealing with things like that constantly by making it seem like it's 'no big deal.' It is a big deal, for a lot of people. You shouldn't hate or belittle people because of it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make things harder.

Every time he calls his mom and demands dinner at 35 years old, I feel myself wince because I can see how horrible of a situation it is all around.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
How was Addie treated well at all? She was a stereotypical "creepy girl" character with barely any depth or function, was abused terribly and mocked at every turn, treated like one of the monsters camera-wise (her creepy halloween mask anyone?) then she was killed horribly for the sole purpose of proving a point about the house so she'd never get to come back with all the other characters. In what way is that not offensive as hell?

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-01-05 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Um, NONE of the AHS characters were treated well. This is pretty apparent if you watched the show. And, it's kind of the point.

And how is it offensive not to make her a ghost trapped and tied to that house forever? She got to move on; given what we see of the spirits, I'd say that's a hell of a lot better fate than what they're facing.

Again, I am forced to ask: Since when has political correctness/sensitivity ever been a hallmark of American horror - any horror, really?
