no one else is going to say this, but that's SUPER gross considering that rape (and that character) is based off a real girl that steig larsson knew; he witnessed her rape and didn't do a damn thing to stop it, and then later felt ~so bad~ he wrote these books as some kind of weird cathartic penance, knowing FULL WELL that girl was still alive to see his fame and success as he wrote about a rape that he failed to stop.

there's nothing wrong with liking rape fantasies but for gods' sake pick a different one to wank over.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
umm you can't really stop yourself from getting turned on in a movie theater though

i agree that larsson's motives for the writing the book were questionable but i'm confused as to how that means that OP shouldn't be turned on by a film adaptation? these seem like two separate issues tbqh.

[identity profile] noforcenosound.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I just think if you're going to have a wank about a rape scene, be respectful and pick one a bit more fictional.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
But but but... this scenario was entirely fictional. But if you want to get technical... I'm sure the rape scenario between Bjurman and Salander has happened to somebody in the world. At some point. (Though maybe not with the nipple piercing) Making it non-fiction. But that would make all rape in fiction essentially non-fiction, because there is probably no realistic, yet fictional rape scenario that has not already happened before, and therefore by this logic no fictional rape scene would be wankable.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
fiction is all based in real life to a certain extent though idk this seems like a weird thing to nitpick about?

like yeah larsson based this character on this girl who got raped but odds are that he didn't know shit about her. so i would consider being turned on by the movie/book still a very far cry from being turned on by an rl rape.

[identity profile] noforcenosound.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
yeah maybe and if she was dead I'd probably feel different but she's alive and idk ugh

it's just all so triggery and weird

OP here: Yes, though Larsson's inspiration for Lisbeth was from a real-life incident, this was a fictional rape of a fictional character. If I thought that it was hot that Larsson saw a girl getting gang raped IRL, then maybe it would be different.

Not really. A girl was raped, that's about where the similarity ends. Writing a book that (while it's not perfect) had the message: "life still sucks for women, misogyny and sexual violence are still rampant and society almost always sides with the rapist instead of the woman," has value.

And unless you've never froze in a violent and horrifying situation, especially when you weren't even in high school yet, you might want to be less judgmental.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
da

welllll, he did name Lisbeth after the woman he saw get gang raped irl...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he didn't. The name has nothing to do with her. I don't know where people get this information.

[identity profile] noforcenosound.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't feel like being "less judgemental" to rape enablers.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Man... Rape fantasy =/= rape enabling

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Read the thread

She's not talking about people with rape fantasies, she's talking about a guy who literally stood by and watched as his friends gangraped a girl.

Make all the shitty arguments about peer pressure you want, that's straight up shitty and rape-enabling

I wasn't talking about the OP. The OP is fine. I was talking about Steig Larsson and the poke at "freezing up"

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
He named the main character after the girl whose rape he witnessed.

Also, shortly after the rape, he went to her house and asked for her forgiveness for not doing anything.

IIRC she refused to give it. Which just makes it even shittier that he then went on to write those books featuring a character with her name.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
NA

By the accounts I've read, she did refuse to forgive him. I think he went on to write these books and put the word out about rape and the sexual abuse of women to assuage his own guilt, nothing more (though of course they were published after his death, so as far as I know he never intended to profit from them). It's one of the reasons why I've refused to read/watch this series; I feel like someone out there is profiting off of the real Lisbeth's rape, and that bothers me to no end.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Could you provide the direct quote in which Larsson says he wrote this to assuage his own guilt and nothing more?

I don't see Lisbeth Salander as a victim. She is a survivor and tough as hell and I think she is one of the strongest female characters I've encountered. I think that's really important to remember.

Also as a poster said he was 15 at the time of witnessing the rape. Yes, he was still a child. I would like people to think about what they were like when they were 15 and think honestly what they would have done. I would have been scared out of my fucking mind to see that. I'm not sure I would have jumped in at that point either. And I am a person who, as a rape survivor, is passionate about these issues.

People get a profit out of making media based on tragic real life events all the time. But I am sure you watch none of those, ever, based on this logic.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, let's not be 'judgemental'[about the only moral fault left on the planet, it seems] that a man failed to do ANYTHING to stop a woman being raped (hardly the work of a moment). god forbid that any man be made to feel bad for that. Could happen to anyone, right?

I'm going to judge him. He's a bastard rape-enabler who then made capital out of his "guilt" - cry moar, mate.

There.

What a supremely idiotic thing for you to say.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What he did at age 15 was wrong. But are you at all familiar with Milgram's experiments? People don't always jump up and do the right thing. Just because you feel like talking tough over the internet doesn't mean you would have either.

And then, decades later, he wrote some books. He didn't make any money from them, they were published posthumously. So for someone who thinks they know enough about this situation to have an opinion on it, you're pretty idiotic yourselt.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
IA with you

I actually made a secret along those lines ages back when I first found out about it, and there was a huge wank in the comments about how he was ~secretly a victim~ somehow. Even though he later went to her house to beg her forgiveness for standing by and watching as she was violated.

[identity profile] noforcenosound.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
omg that's fucking disgusting. you know he was only doing that for his own peace of mind, those types of apology are so selfish. that's so gross :(

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, how old was he when this happened? Someone above said he wasn't in high school yet and where I live that means he was 14 or younger.

If that's true, it makes him a child at the time.

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of this book, but I haven't read it, so I don't know exactly how he's handled it and thus I can't comment further on that.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
P.S. I'd like to add, that I am *super* uncomfortable with him naming the character after the real woman. She can now be possibly identified by people who know either her or the author resulting in very private information being disclosed without her permission. That is not right.

So it's okay for a man to write about a real life rape but not for a woman to react to it? So watching a movie is "super gross" but actual porn is not "super gross"?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Shut up, you judgemental, stupid cunt. >:|
