Yeah, lots of people have a visceral reaction to rape, especially fictional rape that's happening to someone else and isn't in anyway directly threatening to them. Brain wiring, and all that. So long as you don't go about encouraging rape culture, or enacting laws/policies that disempower victims while enabling rapists, there's no problem.

Seriously, don't feel bad about it! Rape fantasies are common both with men and women, people just feel awkward talking about such private things. I guess people are more used to hearing about men's rape fantasies because of porn (that does feature rape) and hentai, and it's extremely common in the latter. Judging by the huge amount of rape hentai doujin and anime, it's one of the most popular sex fantasies fanboys have.

no one else is going to say this, but that's SUPER gross considering that rape (and that character) is based off a real girl that steig larsson knew; he witnessed her rape and didn't do a damn thing to stop it, and then later felt ~so bad~ he wrote these books as some kind of weird cathartic penance, knowing FULL WELL that girl was still alive to see his fame and success as he wrote about a rape that he failed to stop.

I have rape fantasies and I've role-played rape with boyfriends. What I always found interesting was that my rape fantasies feel like the opposite of rape. If I'm playing out a fantasy with a man, I tell him what I want him to do, what he's not allowed to do, what turns me on, what doesn't do it for me, what my safe word is, etc. Sometimes I even tell him very specific ways to move his body and when he's allowed to finish. And someone who's my boyfriend doesn't actually want to rape me or anyone else. It's just a power game. Real rape isn't a game, and of course, everyone knows that. In the game, I'm the "victim", but in reality, I'm in total control. So having rape fantasies doesn't make me feel guilty about anything concerning rape, because it's nothing like rape.

I have always, since I was very young, been very turned on my rape scenes. Even when they made me feel sick, they'd turn me on. I felt guilty and ashamed, like a terrible feminist, for years and years. Coming into fandom helped me realize that there are other people with the same reaction and that it's fiction and it's okay. We can't help what our brains do and as long as you intellectually know that rape in real life is horrible than there's nothing wrong with letting yourself fantasize about the things that turn you on.

Thank you so much for sharing this, OP. It's helping me feel a little less alone. I'm a man who would in real life never want to hurt a woman at all but I can get so damn turned on by rape scenarios that it becomes awful - I feel like a bad man just for taking such pleasure in the ideas.
