Completely agree. They all forget about characterization and canon and how much the backstory we do see in just FC alone is PART of the person.

I've only read less than a handful of all XFC gen/pairing fics that were worth reading or were brilliant.

There are many excellent artists tho.

X-Men was practically my first fandom back in the day, so maybe I just hold too high of a bar for XFC works, but hell I've read plenty of awesome X-Men movie trilogy fics, even WOLVERINE movie fics that were done well. So why not here? Oh right. Pretty actors. /

i agree and disagree. i agree that there is so much potential that has still been left untapped. endless possibilities and the such. And I agree to some extent that some of the most popular fics are great writing at the expense of keeping the characters "in-character". but still, i have read some great stories in this fandom (not necessarily the popular ones) and i believe there will be more to come.

I actually phased out of the fandom a while back, and I guess I'm more an AU fan, but I've always loved Boden's Mate (http://1stclass-kink.livejournal.com/4418.html?thread=6978114#t6978114).

gyzym's Carpe Breweski (http://gyzym.livejournal.com/101616.html) is also extremely popular?

But if you're not really an AU fan, I remember seeing quite a few good fics set in canon, but I never really look at rec lists, and maybe I have different taste :/

Well, it is a comic book movie fandom, which means the purists are more common than with most fandoms, which is terrifying. And the Blu-ray was made cheaply, so the burst that fandoms usually get with the movie release didn't happen as much as it usually would have. And it was overshadowed by the Harry Potter movie. First Class didn't have excellent grounds for a solid fandom in a lot of ways, I think, but saying that: I have been going through the kink meme to find unfilled prompts for pairings and gen alike, and I am writing them. I won't write Erik/Charles (you're on your own for that one) but hopefully I'm not the only one who sees the fandom lagging and decides to step up.

In short: I understand, OP, but I have hopes it will get better.

This secret really surprised me, because I read Charles/Erik and have been really impressed with a lot of the fic I've found -- there's genuine examination of their ideological differences and social backgrounds, with a LOT of variation on where the story finally comes down (everything from "Charles realises being a white wealthy invisibly-mutated man is a huge handicap in his understanding" to "they team up with the understanding that every case will be argued out separately" to "they split and stay split because neither will compromise enough"); and there's been a lot of good handling of Charles's disability, Erik's violence (aggressive defence, terrorism, walking a narrow line between?) and more! Maybe I'm just really good at somehow ferreting out the few awesome/sane corners of the fandom, or something...

In all honesty, my first thought was that the secretmaker must be reading at FF.Net or a mailing list or something, because while I'm certain there's a heaps of mediocre, character-lacking fic out there, I haven't had large difficulties finding things I both love and found challenging/discussion-provoking!

(And I'm totally checking this thread for recs -- of comms and fic challenges, not just individual stories.)

"Non-Con, Mpreg and Fluff?" That's all that you've found? What are you even reading? There's so much angst. Angst everywhere! And then there's the kitten fic and kid fic and AUs.

And maybe it's just me, but I feel the new movie canon is too young for "classics". There are really awesome fics and then there's stuff that survives through a year or two of fandom and still gets recced rather than overshadowed by the shiny new stuff.

Whaaaaaat XD I admit I spend all my time at the kinkmeme (which has a lot of gen stuff, if you're interested) and even there, there is loads and loads of amazing, non-fluffy stuff. As well as really good mpreg/noncon/fluff that is worth it even if you don't like the genre (though there is a lot of it, I can understand if you're not into it.)

But off the top of my head, a handful of angsty recs that do not at all encompass the breadth and strength of the writers in this fandom. I'm pretty big on AU, which all of these are except the first:

While I think eight months is too soon to have "classics" (the parent fandom is nearly 50 years old!) I have really enjoyed the infusion of new writers and new ideas that have come from X-Men First Class. mutatismutandis.dreamwidth.org has more recs - it's been quiet recently but there's good fic and art there.
