Well, seeing as this is a secrets comm...

I don't understand people who take animal violence worse than human violence. It just doesn't click for me. This is probably in part because I'm a farm girl, so I was used to naming baby calves after Disney princesses knowing they were going to end up being eaten. I mean, I never enjoyed it of course, but it was a part of life.

Then I see SPCA commercials and stuff, and it bothers me that people would rather donate money to get strays off the street than donate to a food bank or orphanage. And then there's people who get more shocked over a news article about dogs being tortured than people being murdered.

I guess I just got the Circle of Life thing going for me.

Cuz God knows people can't do both...

They CAN, but for the most part they DON'T. Every fundraising event any school I've been to ever had, witht he exception of Children In Need and Comic Relief which are kind of national things, were for cute animals. People donate to one charity then go OK KARMA BALANCED. For me, that's usually Oxfam or UNICEF, but for a lot of people I know, it's the RSPCA, the WWF, something like that. It's always been a huge bugbear for me :|

Strange. The schools I attended always did fundraising for people. Food drives, clothing drives, care packages, toy donations. But I can't recall a single event for cute animals.

+1 for the awesome comment.

I know what you mean, I always do think its silly (for one its ALL fake in movies these days no animals can be harmed legally) I mean I guess people can be more attached to animals than humans because animals are more "innocent" but humans are animals too, can't you feel at least EQUALLY Bad for them?
I don't think doggies and kitties would be angels if they had the mental capacity to make more complex decisions.

Animals are horrible murderous things. We are best at it but we didn't start it.

[identity profile] eyepatchmcgee.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
haha! yes indeed!

[identity profile] mspotamus.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
it isn't ALWAYS fake in movies. see: cannibal holocaust

[identity profile] eyepatchmcgee.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah that's why I said "these days" i mean movies made NOW in theaters, you cant legally hurt humans or animals in any film released in Canada or america, (or i believe in most if not all European cinema). Which is a very good thing! Just cause I care about humans MORE than animals doesn't mean I don't care about animals.

NO HUMAN OR ANIMAL SHOULD WATCH CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, among cruelty allegations (that seem to be pretty much true) its also just a dreadful dreadful movie.

[identity profile] followthemoth.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I grew up in farm country too and that's what made me vegetarian. As soon as I was old enough to understand/help out with farm stuff I was horrified. Then I was bullied for the rest of my time in hicksville by kids who would leave dead animals at my house and threaten to kill my pets. But nobody gave a fuck cause in the country, it was just "a part of life". Just because something is accepted doesn't mean it's right.

Also people can care about animals and humans. It doesn't have to be one over the other.

That being said, I do feel more comfortable around animals most of the time because I was tormented, raped, and abused by humans. No one has ever apologized or felt any remorse for the actions, they laughed as they tormented me. Even those who weren't directly involved blamed me and said I deserved it. So yeah, I don't feel fucking comfortable around people anymore. So when I do volunteer I prefer to work with animals, who I feel very safe and calm around.

I don't think there are words to express what I'm feeling without being completely cliche, so I'll just stick with being cliche.

You are so damn strong. I don't think I'd retain any tolerance for people if any of that happened to me. And I love you for volunteering with animals, I mean it. I'm so sorry that you were punished for your compassion.

I wish you all the best.

Aww, thank you! I appreciate your kindness, it's heart-warming to a see sweet and well-meaning soul out there.

I still have issues, such as dealing with social issues, depression and self-harm; but all things considered I've made a ton of progress. I would always tell myself "only X more years", and eventually I did get into university and moved away. Life's been steadily improving since then and I function pretty well in society compared to how much of a wreck I was when I lived in my hometown. I used to be pretty misanthropic at one point to be honest, but I came to realize I was really just scared of people. I'm still pretty uncomfortable with anyone I don't know very well, but I'm working through it just like everything else.

I wish you all the best too. :)

it bothers me people would rather donate money to get strays off the street than donate to a food bank or orphanage.

I'd rather donate money to stray animals because (as a vet assistant) I know what happens to them if they don't. They get sent and held at the vet's pound, then put down within 1-2 weeks if someone doesn't buy them. At least orphans have a roof over the head and homeless people aren't put down en masse for not having a home. These animals never got a chance at a happy life or a loving family...all because people dumped them on the street, kept feeding them scraps so that they bred and bred even more strays, some have the flu or kennel cough or cat AIDs, some are in such poor condition that there's nothing that can be done to help them, etc.
And the less food the pound has has to feed them, the less animals they can hold and the quicker they are all put down. In my job, it isn't unusual to put down up to 15 dogs and cats in a single day. So yeah...I'd much rather donate money to helping them than other charities kthxbai. I don't think that makes me a bad person or something that should "bother" you.

"I don't understand people who take animal violence worse than human violence."

Because animals are innocent and they don't understand. When guys are shooting each other in the street, I'm not really gonna care about them. They're being stupid. But if a person is torturing an animal for no reason, it is going to make me angry, because the animal didn't do anything. They don't understand and they can't fend for themselves. It does depend on the violence though. There is all kind of violence between humans, but there is something about animal violence that breaks my heart. It's on the same level as cruelty/violence towards children too, because they are innocent and helpless as well.

As far as the secret goes; rape is awful... however it just seems that in this society people are desensitized to rape and violence in movies... So I can understand where the OP is coming from....

For me? Because animals are, for the most part, entirely innocent victims who are subjected to the whims of humanity. I can compartmentalize the need for food/farming/hunting because it's a necessity and hey, every omnivore/carnivore kills for its food. We're not special in that regard. We are more or less special (barring a very few exceptions) in that we will hurt other living beings just because we can and that doesn't sit right with me. So yeah, I'd rather donate to shelter full of animals who have been beaten, tortured, mutilated and/or abandoned with no means to help themselves simply because we humans have a massive superiority complex and decided on a whim that having wild animals at our beck and call would be awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I get the "animals are innocent = they don't deserve it" reasoning, because NO innocent victim deserves violent abuse (even those who had it coming, in my opinion).

The human raised awareness makes the violence at least a bit worse for them in my opinion.
A lot of animals can feel just as much pain, but rape?
Many animals cannot be raped, because they don't care.
The emotional hurt is much worse for humans.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It "bothers" you that people care about animal suffering and want to donate money to help alleviate it?

The thing with animal violence and suffering is that domestic animals are always and inherently dependent on humans for their very existence, because we have literally created these breeds, and so any violence or neglect of them is not just cruelty, it's abuse. Animals will never have the opportunity to "grow up" and try to take care of themselves, because as domestic animals, they are dependent on humans for the entirety of their existence. There are plenty of charitable causes that deserve financial support, but the notion that it "bothers" you that someone would be most move by the horrifying abuse of animals (which, unlike the other causes you mentioned, has vanishingly little in the way of government-funded support) is strange and disturbing. Apparently abuse is only bad if it is inflicted on our own species?

Learn to read?

Anon said it bothers her that people are MORE concerned over animals than people. As in, a completely different think from what you're pretending you think they said.

Given that in 2006 the Donkey Sanctuary received more in private donations than the top three charities for domestic abuse combined, I reckon it's a bit fucked up not to be bothered by that, tbh.

[identity profile] x-expat.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Because when you kill an animal for food, it's quick and perfunctory. Hunters don't torture their quarry for fun, and neither do those who process animals for their products. When someone abuses an animal, it's needless. The animal is in pain; screams and suffers for a long time. It becomes personalized.

Some people don't understand why folks are so concerned about animal suffering and welfare. I don't understand why people AREN'T.
