That animals are important to you? I'm personally not an animal person, but I know people who feel a lot more strongly about animals than they do about most people. I haven't seen the film (though I've heard descriptions) so I don't know how graphic either thing is, but people just react differently to different things.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same, OP. It doesn't help that I just adopted a tabby cat. I went home after the movie and hugged him while I cried.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for this warning, now I'll skip this film until the DVD, and find out the scene to skip. That sort of thing always haunts me, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
It says you think death and mutilation are worse than rape, and you're less desensitized to animal violence than human violence. Pretty normal, I think.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, seeing as this is a secrets comm...

I don't understand people who take animal violence worse than human violence. It just doesn't click for me. This is probably in part because I'm a farm girl, so I was used to naming baby calves after Disney princesses knowing they were going to end up being eaten. I mean, I never enjoyed it of course, but it was a part of life.

Then I see SPCA commercials and stuff, and it bothers me that people would rather donate money to get strays off the street than donate to a food bank or orphanage. And then there's people who get more shocked over a news article about dogs being tortured than people being murdered.

I guess I just got the Circle of Life thing going for me.

Cuz God knows people can't do both...

That you are pretty standard representative of the average western media consumer? "If there were puppies dying of AIDS in Africa we'd have taken care of that within three days" etc. and rape and violence against humans (and especially sexual violence against women - imagine the reaction to a guy getting raped in movie) is pretty much normalized on TV. Yeah.

I'm right there with you, anon. I had no problem watching the rape scene because I'm easily able to remember that they're actors & they're being paid stupid amounts of money to bring that scene to life.

But the dead cat, I couldn't even look at the screen. I hid my eyes like a child. There was no amount of "it's a prop, it's foam rubber, that's corn syrup and food colouring" that could persude me to look at the screen until my friend said it was okay.

Totally agree with (most) of the posts here - I understand it and I don't think you're a bad person for it.

inb4 "HOW DARE YOU CARE ABOUT ANIMALS MORE THAN PEOPLE, THE HUMANE SOCIETY IS EVIL DONATE TO A REAL CHARITY! PETA!!!!!!"

Cause it's not like you can care about people and animals or support more than one cause. /sarcasm

Seriously though, violence towards someone helpless like an animal, child or elderly person always upsets me more than violence toward an able-bodied adult. I think both are horrible, but when the victim is someone so vunerable and innocent it just adds to my distress. That being said, I can't watch/read anything about rape.

What is this so I can avoid it?

I would probably be mildly squicked by the rape scene but traumatized forever at the other thing. I'm much more an animal person all the way.

I don't think it's unusual or bad. And I don't think it has anything to do with being desensitized to human violence or not accepting the Circle of Life either. At least, not for me. I personally find animal abuse more horrifying than (almost) anything that humans can do to each other because animals are entirely powerless. It takes a special sort of monster to abuse an animal that can't defend itself (and in fact, usually will do anything to please a human). It's the same reason why child abuse seems so much more horrific than the abuse of an adult. It's about the perceived innocence.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for this secret, OP. I will now NOT see this movie, because... a simulated rape scene I could possibly sit through, reminding myself these are actors and nothing real is taking place. A mutilated cat? Oh god, no amount of reminding myself it's just a movie is going to help with that.

I can't stand animal cruelty, it's one of the things that bother me the most. I will try to avoid that part.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
What? Why is there a mutilated cat? There were no mutilated cats in the original Swedish version. What the fucking hell!

Now I can't watch this version. Shit.

Yeah, to be honest I'm on the fence about seeing the American movie for this very reason.

And it's not that horrible things happening to humans doesn't bother me. But animal abuse does bother me a lot.

I think what bothers me a lot about most animal cruelty in movies is that it feels especially pointless to me. So often, it's just used as a formulaic way to deliver a threat to the human characters, without any other point. The animals often don't have anything to do with the larger story. They're just punished for being there, pretty much.

There are upsetting subjects about humans that I have a hard time with, too. But a lot of times I can still watch movies with those things if I know there's a point to it and I'm prepared for it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
I want to watch this in theaters but want to avoid that part. Can anyone give me any tips about around what time it happens and how long is lasts?

I'll be doing the same for Lizbeth's rape scene, but I've already been informed about that one, including the fact it lasts forever, fml.

I'm really curious about this cat scene. Was it long? Or brief? Me thinks I don't think I will see this movie....

The people saying that it's easier to accept that everything's okay and it's all fake with human violence make a good point. Gosh, I think I understand myself better now. XD I love gory shows/movies/books/etc., but I get really sad and uncomfortable when animals are involved. I think it's also that they're never truly involved in the situation. Just, you know, bein' a cat, and then... Well, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of watching American Psycho with a friend of mine in theatres. None of the human violence bothered us in any way, but as soon as Patrick picked up that kitten and headed toward the ATM, we both shouted "Not the kitten!"

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the cat too, and me and mom joked about cats being spoiled entitled little things since we had a tabby do the same thing to us recently. It was sad when that happened, but a bit predictable looking back on it because why would they bother putting a cute animal in a movie like this unless they were going to kill it for ~*shock value*~.

But considering that the scene with the cat was only a minute long and it's suffering had ended without us having to watch the process of it's mutilation, it wasn't that bad. The rape scene and the parts discussing the torture methods used on the girls was much worse to me. It was clarified that the murder victims were tortured before being killed, and we know what's-her-name(I don't remember any of their names) did live past her rape.

I understand being more sensitive to animal deaths because they're innocent and all, but when the movie throws all this rape and graphic torture of human beings at the audience I really couldn't bring myself to care about the cat for that long. Though that's just me, since I saw the movie with no idea what it was about and was not prepared in the slightest for it. /shrug

[identity profile] x-expat.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for warning me about the mutilated cat scene. I won't be seeing this movie.

There's nothing wrong with you btw. Personally, I think domestic animals are as helpless against their abusers as children. And no one would fault you for being upset over child abuse/death/mutilation.

[identity profile] glamourcorpse.livejournal.com 2012-01-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the Swedish adaption trilogy, which someone gave me as a gift but haven't been too stoked about what I'm seeing from the US one. I know the cat killin' isn't an invention just for the movie, but yeesh, thanks for the warning. The rape scene is bad enough, but it's a MAJOR event, the cat...ehhhhhhhhh. Gratuitous much?
