I get that it's a Disney movie and Ariel's the heroine so we're supposed to take her side, but seriously? Triton was not a bad or abusive father. Ariel was his favorite and he doted on her constantly. He allowed her a LOT of freedom, wouldn't hear a word against her, was delighted to hear she'd fallen in love, etc.

He was understandably frustrated because whenever he tried to discipline her for doing stupid/dangerous things, as a parent should, she just ignored him or sweet-talked her way out of it. She also KEPT disobeying him, shirking from her responsibilities, ditching her chaperone and getting herself into danger because she felt like it. He dealt with it as best he knew how, but when he saw her collection, it was the last straw. He'd been telling her he didn't want her to be caught in a net or harpooned or smashed to death by a boat, or to endanger their entire society by being noticed, and here she is surrounded by evidence that she'd risked her life thousands of times to collect the possessions of Very Dangerous Predators.

It's not a great analogy, but imagine your teenage daughter is sneaking into a meth lab and collecting crack pipes and needles and dirty condoms because she thinks it's ~mysterious~, and one day you find her sing-songing in a secret room lined with this shit about how she's going to marry the dealer? How the hell do you process that with anything but rage and horror? Yes, he lost his shit, yes he yelled at her and broke her things, and that wasn't the best way to handle it. But he didn't hurt her, he didn't debase her worth in any way, he told her why he was punishing her, and he felt remorseful about it afterward. That's NOT abuse. That's decent parenting.

Honestly, this is what I think whenever this issue comes up.

lmao oh god, I can never watch this movie again without thinking about Ariel the Little Crackhead now

Aw man. this one is actually funnier then the example I used above. I'm stealing yours if this ever comes up again, k?

AGREE. So very much.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I hate this argument because he doesn't seem abusive, he just seems like a concerned parent who flipped his shit because his daughter kept putting herself in danger.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
But Ariel wasn't sneaking into anything like a meth lab. She was just trying to see humans. Yes, I know that humans killed her mother, but not all humans are like that. Triton was blinded by his prejudice. Ariel certainly made her own share of mistakes, but they don't invalidate Triton's.

Just because Triton was sweet to her most of the time doesn't mean his reaction wasn't abusive. Unless your daughter is holding drugs or knives to cut herself with, destroying her possessions is NOT decent parenting. Decent parenting would be allowing her to have an interest in humans. If he had listened to what she was interested in, she probably wouldn't have said "Fuck you, I'm not following any of your rules."

Decent parenting would be allowing her to have an interest in humans

er, why would anyone try to foster their child's interest in something they thought would end up getting them hurt or killed?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen Ursula? Living under the sea put her in just as much danger.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Because not all humans want to hurt and kill mermaids? Or, to use other examples mentioned, not all white people hate black people, not every stranger is a meth dealer, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Decent parenting would be allowing her to have an interest in humans.

Humans killed his wife. Humans had done more harm to him than even Ursula. Do you think that if a random human had found a mermaid they won't have sold her to the highest bidder, displayed her, and then dissected her after an early demise? That's before they searched for the rest of her species, which Ariel was risking every time she willingly risked being spotted to sneak a peek or add another item to her collection.

Different anon here.

Do you think that if a random human had found a mermaid they won't have sold her to the highest bidder, displayed her, and then dissected her after an early demise?

The whole point of the movie is that Eric didn't do that, though, and Triton ASSUMED HE WOULD. Eric even ended up saving Triton and Ariel's life from Ursula. Plus, Triton had the ability the entire time to turn Ariel human. He just had no idea how MUCH she wanted to be human (because, really, he honestly didn't seem to spend that much time with her).

That's before they searched for the rest of her species

Where did this even happen? Am I missing something?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
SA, just clarifying:

Plus, Triton had the ability the entire time to turn Ariel human, which would have made it safer for her to live in the human world.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's a Disney movie. How the hell was Triton supposed to know that the one human Ariel met first would be a literal prince charming? The point was that if Triton was acting realistically, he'd think that a person wasn't going to be a perfect prince to an otherworldly creature when profit and fame was to be had. If a given person found a mermaid at the time, it's going to get out. And humans would have gone looking for others of it's kind. By exposing herself to the view of humans Ariel was exposing every other mermaid to the whims of mankind.

You're also forgetting that Ariel is his daughter, as well as a princess who had obligations. Would you turn your daughter into a fish on a whim because she'd be less likely to drown that way?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ursula didn't do as much harm because she had nothing to use against him. With Ariel's contract in tow, she intended to hurt Triton and his family much more than humans had. And in real life, that's what humans would have done, but in this movie, when her tail came out, there was shock, but no one moved to dissect her.

I'm not saying that Ariel's actions weren't risky. But Triton's reaction was not justified. It only steered her into more danger.

I agree

You don't find the fact that she's sixteen years old and isn't allowed out of the house without a "chaperone" just a little bit problematic? That doesn't read as "a lot of freedom" to me.
