I never really got what all the fuss was about over the movie title. So, Disney is trying to appeal to a wider audience through words. Big deal. If the movie is good, who gives a hoot what it's called?

If it doesn't matter what it's called, why did it need to be renamed in the first place?

Like I said, Disney trying to appeal to a wider audience. You gotta get people to go see the damn thing obviously.

YMMV, but maybe it's because words are not always just words? Words define our world because they articulate how society thinks about things, and it's those in power who get to make these decisions. If society changes the wording of a title to make it less feminine (because feminine=apparently bad), what that says to me is that it's not okay to deviate from "normal gender roles".

If that were true, wouldn't they primarily be making more films about male heroes? What's so bad about marketing a story to both sexes through the title? Disney is a business first and foremost. They want to make money. Is this seriously such a surprise?

It's not about it being surprising, it's about it being shitty. Nobody is surprised about Disney catering to the sexist society.

Also Disney is making a lot of movies about male heroes, not sure what you're talking about there. Even among the "Disney Classics" we have Pinocchio, Bambi, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Brother Bear, Robin Hood, Treasure Planet, Jungle Book, Emperor's New Groove, Tarzan, blablabla. Lots of movies, anyway.

I may be wrong, but I think they may be saying that the emphasis isn't really on those characters in the marketing. Plus in Snow Queen, the primary character is a little girl.

Huh? They specifically said "If that were true, wouldn't they primarily be making more films about male heroes?".

I'm not sure what you mean with"emphasis in the marketing", sorry, that's me failing at English. Do you that they would put more emphasis on promoting a male character in a movie that has a female lead if it were true?
Because the 2 minutes of the Tangled trailer have about 15 seconds showing Rapunzel (not counting her hair) and is being ALL about Flynn.

Or maybe you talk about "Disney Princess"? Because that's a specific franchise and while certainly big, only part of Disney's marketing.

I'm sorry that I don't understand you.

Taking a quick look at Disney films over the years, it seems to me that there are at least as many, if not twice as many movies with male main characters than female(I will admit that a lot of those are movies with animal protagonists, while practically all of the movies with female protagonists have human main characters, which is something else very interesting that I've never thought about before and I'm not sure what it means). There is nothing bad about marketing a story to both sexes, not at all. Where I object is when they take one gender, female in this case (and so often when there is discrimination against a gender), and saying "no, this is not good enough".

And it's not a surprise, no - it's entirely expected. What Disney is doing is just one example of what society in general does. I'm not really blaming them specifically (no more than I would blame any other company), but I do think it's interesting and that it says so much about what we consider acceptable, and I don't think there's anything wrong with questioning it when something strikes me as wrong.

You're reading a lot into that. What the execs are saying is Feminine = !masculine and little boys like masculine. They're looking for ways to get little boys to see the movies, and if a change in title would do that, why not go for it? It's making a more gender neutral title.

Wouldn't you be all over a change from "Super action fighting ninjas" to something like "Secrets" because it's less masculine and therefore might attract girls?
