I don't even mind with Tangled at this point (I like the name now), but Frozen just makes it sound like it's trying to be like Tangled.

I don't think it's a dumb thing to get upset over at all. It just proves that Disney is more looking at what sells than what works.

[identity profile] scornedsaint.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I still don't understand how the name Tangled was less girly than Rapunzel. It always makes me think of long, tangled hair, which generally/stereotypically most young boys don't have and would be more likely to associate with girls.

Me too. The Snow Queen is one of my favorite fairy tales and ever since I was little I hoped Disney would do an adaptation of it. But if it turns out like Tangled...no thanks. I want a traditional Disney fairy tale :(

It's just the title. I mean, if you don't like the movie/trailer when it comes out, that's one thing. If you don't like the art-style (when we get more definitive answers about it) that's one thing. But the title? Uh...

Than again, I may be biased as I actually love the name "Tangled", and I love the name "Frozen" because it reminds me of one of my favorite bands, so... >>;

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well...unfortunately, our society is stupid and likes to go "Oh, Rapunzel. That's a PRINCESS movie. You wouldn't like that son."

:/

Our society has progressed some on that front, but not enough. And c'mon. Princess and the Frog didn't do well at the box office. Now, whether it was due to the story (which was lacking badly) or the title, or hell, even both (i can get behind this one). (also the racism in our society), you can't blame Disney for trying its damnedest to appeal to all audiences.

It IS a company. Granted, they like to turn out quality movies (YMMV on that front. i've liked most of their films), but they are ALSO a business. They want to make money in the best way possible and if that means making a gender-neutral or just in-general-neutral title for a film, then so be it.

So...that's why I'm not that put off by the name change.

Granted. I can understand the frustration. I'd be a little miffed if say The Little Mermaid was changed to...oh, I dunno, Fins, but yeah.

At least this movie has yet to be fully in production. I'm just happy the damn thing is FINALLY gonna be animated after being shelved at least

I'm not too hip to the name 'Frozen' because 'The Snow Queen' sounds like it'd be a better movie to me. My big question is: does anybody know if they're animating this in 2D? Or have they not decided/released this yet?

Yeah, Frozen is a stupid title, especially because "The Snow Queen" sounds so fucking cool. I'll still check out the movie, though, and I will enjoy it as long as the dialog doesn't sound too modern and celebrity-y. A fairy tale needs the atmosphere of a fairy tale!

I think they just think "The Snow Queen" is a boringly old-fashioned type of title and wanted something new and slightly "edgy" sounding. Short one-word titles have been the "in" style for a while now.

I honestly can't blame Disney. First and foremost, they're a business trying to make money--which means appealing to as many demographics as possible by whatever means necessary.

I can see a young boy going up to his "MY SON WILL BE A MAN!" parents and saying, "I want to see The Snow Queen!" because he's just a kid who wants to watch a cartoon (and society and his parents haven't bashed him over the head with traditional gender role stereotypes yet) and his ridiculous parents thinking, "The Snow Queen? NO SON OF MINE..."

We can pretend they don't exist, but they do. At least with the new trend in hip, loosely related to the story, one-word titles, the parents are fooled long enough to take the kid to the theater and see the story. In the end, the kid wins--which is the only win I care about.

I guess I'm just of the school of thought that I don't care how they package the present, as long as it's good enough to get the package opened.

I've really had it with media bending over backwards to put male viewers first. Testosterone up the girl stories as much as possible but don't you dare put any sparkle in the boy ones. The ladies will start thinking we actually want them as an audience and we can't have that.

Ngl, I'm super upset about this. I do not want another Tangled.

Also what is with the 'boy won't see this' bull; really Disney? Boys went to see and liked The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, etc. when I was kid. Has society gone backwards or something?

I never really got what all the fuss was about over the movie title. So, Disney is trying to appeal to a wider audience through words. Big deal. If the movie is good, who gives a hoot what it's called?

Sorry OP, but I'm just so happy Disney is still making a Snow Queen movie.
Sadly I don't think the problem is not that boys would be alienated, but for some reason a lot of parents have a bug up their ass that little boys should not see "princess" movies!

It does kind of make me sad that these changes are being made. I'm still sad that Rapunzel couldn't be Rapunzel, but I hope maybe this can get us back to the point where parents realize that it doesn't matter if it's a "princess" movie as long as it's a good movie.

[identity profile] livetuned.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Most of Disney's success comes through their Princess franchise (and I'm sure lots of little boys saw some of these movies, c'mon), so for them to turn around and go "Nope! Too girly!" and change it to something else is so silly to me. And I kind of doubt it was just the "Princess" in PaTF's title that led to it not being an immediate favourite. I mean, it opened right around the same time as Avatar.
