Agreed so much. I've said this on a Sherlock comm: It's 2012,there's no reason they can't be a couple. And, honestly, the innuendo and coyness has stopped being cute, and feels more cowardly. "We can joke about them being a couple, but we haven't got the balls to carry though with it".

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much.

I ship Sherlock/John so hard, and it kind of kills me that I don't think they'll ever make it canon.

I hope they'll get up the courage to do it, but I don't have a lot of hope. Especially not with Moffat in charge, ugh.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I ship them, too, and I realise that that colours my opinion. But, again, it's 2012, the show mentions it at all the time, the show has other gay characters... What, exactly, is stopping them from making them a couple?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
what other characters are gay?

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Irene, that couple in "Hounds"... huh, I could have sworn there were more...

Oh, you thought I meant regulars, huh? Oops. No, I guess not.

[identity profile] smiles.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't Harry also gay? I mean, not that we've ever seen her but still, she is John's sister so she's somewhat relevant?

Well Sherlock is asexual, so...

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Being asexual hardly means you can't be in a romantic relationship. :|

I mean. Unless I'm sorely mistaken. Just let me ask my girlfriend...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely this.

Also, maybe I'm mad, but as far as I'm concerned Sherlock's asexuality is not a foregone conclusion, but that's a whole other barrel of fish.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's not. I prefer to think of him as asexual -- I am too, of course I do. But it isn't a sure thing in the show.

So, so mad at people who think that if he is asexual it means he can't be in a relationship, though. UGH.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, have we heard Sherlock, himself, say he's asexual?? Hell, even his being a virgin was stated by other people, one of whom was getting him back for calling him a "queen", and the other of whom really has no basis to know (what, has Jim followed Sherlock around every day since he hit puberty?).

[identity profile] straydog733.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
...knowing Moriarty, maybe?

A Study in Pink, unaired pilot, starting at O7:16 with the date scene.
The dialogs are a bit different but Sherlock implies that he's asexual.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, but I do have a friend who can't even be in a romantic relationship. I don't have a problem with people shipping John/Sherlock, but I would be annoyed if they made it canon. It is possible for two men to love each other without there being any romantic feelings.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
You have a friend who can't be in a romantic relationship... okay? I have a friend who shouldn't be in romantic relationships. I don't see how that means a damn thing.

It is possible for two men to love each other without there being any romantic feelings.

NO FUCKING KIDDING. Look at EVERY SHOW OUT THERE EVER. Having ONE SHOW depict two men who are friends and become a couple doesn't mean SHIT compared to the huge number of shows that have two main male characters who are just friends. It doesn't.

I am so fucking fed up with people saying how it's such a ~shame we want them to be gay because THEY CAN JUST BE FRIENDS GUYS OMG WHY CAN'T TWO MEN JUST BE FRIENDS.

Newsflash: THEY CAN. And the fact that they can has been thoroughly demonstrated in EVERY other movie, EVERY other show, EVERY other book. Jesus fucking christ, WAKE UP.

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Dang. Hear, hear.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's hilarious that you actually have to point this out to the people in here
Did they get their TVs from a bizarro world full of gay lead characters in relationships? If it's like that then hey, I'm willing to trade for the shitty bromances I see everywhere I look because frankly I've had it with them.

Two men ARE allowed to love each other without it being romantic. Whether you like it or not, oh Queen of the Hissy Fits :P

But John is definitely not asexual. So unless this is an open relationship and John has sex on the side or it's poly and John has a girlfriend, John becomes a celibate martyr. And honestly, I don't want to see an asexual Sherlock/sexual John relationship in that (or any other Holmes) series. And I definitely don't want the series to get into poly politics.

I don't see Sherlock as asexual, anyway, so much as celibate because he doesn't care people or sex enough to not be, but that's a different issue.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you - and if I'm honest, Sherlock as celibate makes more sense to the character than being asexual does, imo. And I can go either way. If he breaks that celibacy for John it would be really.. interesting, and touching. (On the other hand, I have an ongoing RP universe wherein Sherlock is asexual but will "go there" for John because he cares about him and because there are things about it that he appreciates, if not the act itself. *shrug*)

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
I actually like that idea, though I fear it kind of makes John looks selfish. "I know you don't wanna do this, but I really want to!"

OTOH, John willingly does a shitton of stuff for Sherlock whether he really wants to or not, so it's not like it'd be a one-way street.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
There is a lot of compromises in a relationship with someone who is asexual. Having the sexual party to be celibate isn't the only solution. It depends on the comfort level of the asexual party. Some will see being sexual with their sexual partner as relative no biggie because they want to give their partner pleasure even though they won't experience that pleasure through sexual intimacy. Hell some would even get off because they are giving someone that kind of pleasure. Some can not stand sex in any instance even if they are hetero/homo/pan/bi-romantic, and some in between. Asexuality isn't one solid group, it has different subcategories.

this. Hell, I don't even actively ship Sherlock/John, but I was watching the series finale and MY GOD why aren't they a couple. It's 2012, it's a modern interpretation. They've already changed things from the original stories, so it's not like that's a big thing. Why not have Sherlock and John in a relationship?

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a sucker for the innuendo and the coyness, but deep down I'm bitter that it's all it will amount to. And this isn't just Sherlock either. I love platonic friendships, but every time there's a "hee hee it's just like they're married, but they're not. it's just guy love between two guys ;)", I feel it just turns homosexuality into a joke. As if the idea of romance somehow cheapens the relationship. Yet if that were the case, why is it so hard to find strong platonic friendships between two characters of different gender.

Oh, I really do hate pulling the "well if one party was female..." card, because I hate the idea of shoehorning romance/flirtation on every female character ever (with or without chemistry), so it's unfair to deny the idea of two males just being close friends. But the chemistry is there, and it's so believable (imo anyways). I'm just tired of it being toyed with, but it never being deliberately okay in canon. It's like this show wants to appear progressive, but never commit to it. It's only ever for kicks and fanservice.

And hell, if Moffat/Gatiss honestly aren't that committed to preserving the canon relationships. Just look at Irene. I don't intend that as if she's a "threat" to a ship, or anything like that, just that if they're willing to be so flexible with character interpretations—

I think I'm just ranting now. I will stop, but man am I THIS'ing your comment quite hard.
