I always kind of wonder what people's stance is on downloading the scanlations, buying the manga, and then continuing to use the scanlations because the scanlator put more serious thought and effort into their translation than the person getting paid for it did.

Partly because, other than to support the author, it feels like the free offering is the higher-quality product and there's little motivation to purchase it as a result (though I obviously do). I'm not sure if that's weird or not?

Not saying this to be a dick, I'm just genuinely curious, what series are coming out (in english) that the scanlator's translations are better?

But yeah, if the scanlator's translations are better, I don't think that's a weird thing to do...

Trinity Blood. Especially the light novels. For crying out loud they couldn't get one characters name straight, not to mention that the grammar or continuation errors regarding eye colours.

The main one I'm thinking of is Maiden Rose, where although the professional translator is probably technically better, the fan scanlator puts so much thought and effort into it that I just find it truer to the original spirit of the lines. June seems to prefer using the most literal sense of the words without keeping the metaphorical ones, and the metaphors are definitely there.

There are a couple others though.

Hellsing, and in Count Cain at least on the names as the official translator had a tendency of not investigating about names as simple as Jezebel and Barabbas.

This I have to wonder about too. The closest Japan to American release difference is going to be SJ Alpha when it is released, which will be on a 2 week delay.

Now, IMO that's close enough to justify the wait and subscribe, but a little voice in the back of my mind is like "If fans can get manga out within 24 hours having to scan it, clean it, etc, why can't the official company who has access to the manga in a digital format before it even prints do it in less than two weeks?"

Although IMO, there's still motivation to buy because having the volumes both is nice to collect and saves a lot of eyestrain from computer reading, but that's besides the point.

I think there's legal issues with the 2-week delay. I'm pretty sure it doesn't take that long to prep the chapters... I'm lettering one of the series that runs in it, and I thiiiink I get the files before they're out in Japan, the translation quickly after that, and turn in the final files a day or two after that. All in all, it takes maybe 5 days from getting the files to turning the company-approved ones in? I don't know if other series that run in it take longer, or putting the whole thing together takes a while, but I really think it's a legal matter… like the only way Shueisha would agree to the deal is to have a delay.

Sorry for the rambling! I totally get what you're saying and I agree (and that little voice in the back of my mind tells me the same thing), just adding my 2 cents on the matter.

I'm really curious about what scanlated series you find to be higher quality translations (I'm not trying to be snarky--it's a serious question since it seems to me that in general licensed translations are usually much higher quality, though I also have found a few exceptions).

In my experience: Shaman King, regarding the quality of the translation. Which is a shame because I harbor a secret hate for the scanlation group, and was disappointed that the official translation seemed to have dumbed things down. I found that some things were translated so vaguely that the meaning was hard to understand, or lost its punch.

Maiden Rose is one, more from a story perspective than a technical one (the scanlator admits to not being the most proficient). Explanation here: http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/826117.html?thread=516891909#t516891909

Kind of on a tangent here, but I have noticed that sort of thing with fansubbed anime. I can't speak to the accuracy of the translations, but there's a fair amount of officially translated anime with say, bad English grammar, not translating important background text, etc. It also seems a lot of times that the fansubs have like...more personality, I guess? Even though that may come from slightly fudged translations.

I can't personally think of a series that this applies to, but I don't think anybody would find that objectionable. I mean, a lot of people who are concerned about the manga industry (and scanlation groups who want to cover their asses) encourage scanlation readers to buy raw copies and that's not much different.
