That really bummed me out too, even though I had thought that I was immune to being disappointed by CLAMP after all their previous soul crushery. Ah well, at least I've read some nice fic about them to sooth me.

Only now that I think about it, Angelic Layer, Magic Knights Rayearth, Syaron and Sakura until CLAMP fucked them up, Chobits, Suki, Wish (if you see it like that)... On second thought, Anon, yeah, I agree a little. :|

Except it's Kohane and Doumeki we're talking about here. Both were in love with Watanuki and after giving up hope on him, decided to do the convenient thing (get married, have kids together so the kids can start looking after Watanuki after all Watanuki's friends have passed away). It's not only depressing, it's kinda unhealthy IMO.

It had nothing to do with "heterosexuality winning".

I felt the same way and-big fandom secret-when it was revealed that Himawari also got married I got hugely depressed too. Though for me it was OT3 or bust.

Maybe if CLAMP had actually cared about the ending, Doumeki and Watanuki could have gotten together. Heck, Watanuki and Kohane could have gotten together at least! But no, the writers wanted to leave a hole in everyone's heart.

Oh god this ending. I felt so mad at basically every aspect of it. The only thing I liked was Yuuko appearing again (I hadn't realized how much I liked her until she disappeared; I thought my favorite part of the manga was Watanuki/Doumeki, but without her, Rou was just... blegh).

I felt mad because NO-ONE GOT THEIR HAPPY ENDING. Even Himawari, who probably got the (supposedly) happiest ending in the series, could only communicate with Watanuki by the use of telephones.

I swear CLAMP is too addicted to angst, and not the good kind of angst; it's maddening and annoying as fuck. Sure, let everyone be miserable!

God. Damn.

Aw man I agree, I just got so disappointed with where they took that series and Watanuki's ending. Blegh, everytime I see a picture I get a little sad because I was (pathetically) pretty invested in the characters. :\

I didn't care about the pairings in that series, but I hated the way it just died such a slow, dull death. I just found almost all of Rou to be dead boring, and then at the end it just...stopped. I'll take TRC's mindscrew ending any day over that. At least shit happened at the end of TRC.

This. That ending could have been done so much better. I don't even mean changing the pairing or what happens to the characters per se, I just mean better story telling. That exact ending could have been really good (if heart wrenching) if they'd put some effort into actually telling it properly.

I seriously did not think I would care so much about it either, but then I totally cried into my pillow the day I found out about the ending (was only on second volume or so at the time). Then I marathon-read all the volumes just so I can enjoy their pre-Rou interactions a bit longer. Sigh, thinking about the ending still makes me feel all empty inside ;__;

The ending made me cry, and I didn't even start out shipping Doumeki/Watanuki, I liked Watanuki/Himawari (with a naughty side of Yuuko/Watanuki). But Doumeki gradually became my favorite character, so the idea of him carrying this massive, unrequited love for Watanuki was just too sad. Unrequited, because while having Doumeki around is better than drinking alone, there is nothing in Rou to indicate that his feelings go any deeper - grandfather, grandson, it's all the same to Watanuki.

There was no way Doumeki and Watanuki could become a couple in canon (seinen manga), but the characters (and readers) could have been treated with more respect.

After XXXholic ended, I started writing a fic where Doumeki and Watanuki hook up via time travel, but I didn't finish it. For me, the ending to XXXholic is so bad it destroys any good feelings I had about the characters and makes the good chapters that came before terrible in retrospect.
