At first I thought "oh they're really scraping the barrel with this whole supernatural guy/normal girl stuff *rollseyes*" then read the summary on wikipedia. Ok don't think it's my thing, but huh...doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as or anything like Twilight from that brief paragraph.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read this book, but I have had it with people comparing every single interspecies romance in recent fiction to Twilight. Like you said, OP, it existed before that series, and it will exist after everyone's over it. It's an interesting trope all its own.

This has especially pushed my buttons recently because one of my fandoms has an interspecies romance, and several critics wrote it off as "Twilight-esque", even though the female half of the couple got to keep her career and life---the exact opposite of what happens in Twilight.

the female half of the couple got to keep her career and life

ooooo, that's all I need to know to want to read this book! I love paranormal romances, but only when the non-paranormal half does something other then angst over their supernatural lover.

Thanks OP and [livejournal.com profile] hermione_vader, I needed a new book to read for the Monday morning commute =)

Agreed with this. I haven't read the particular book in the secret either (and if I'm totally honest I'm slightly bewildered by the zombie idea) but this trope existed long, long, long before Twilight.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Thiiiiiis.

My god, I almost slapped a girl back in college in my creative writing class. My short story wasn't even romance! It was horror-esque with the girl meeting the guardian spirit of the graveyard and overcoming her fear of death. The Spirit had skin stretched over bones, showed veins, and was translucent.

THE GIRL SAID THAT SHE LOVED HOW MUCH IT WAS LIKE TWILIGHT, AND THAT I CAPTURED THE 'OTHERWORLDY' STUFF AS WELL AS SMEYER DOES. IN COMPLETE SERIOUSNESS. FORGET THE FACT THAT MERYER DISCARDS ACTUAL DESCRIPTIONS TO JUST SAY HOW PERFECT THEY ARE GRRRRRRAAAAAWWW-

...Sorry. Issues. Still recovering. Half the class was looking at the girl as if she was insane, the other half was trying not to laugh (and failing) at the expression on my face. At least that was funny.

But yes. Twilight fans and critiques need to shut up about how popular Twilight it. No, it did not define anything, it just copied same old same old and made it popular.

Looks like bullshit.

Just reading the plot on Wiki makes me irrationally annoyed this is being made into a movie, because now on the rare chance that Generation Dead gets its own movie(s), people will just call it a rip-off of this.

And tbh, I don't even find the plot of Warm Bodies interesting.

honestly i really want to be able to not lol at this premise, because i love love love love love teresa palmer and nicholas hoult also deserves to get his big break. but... not from this movie. no.

Zombies as romantic heroes have been done before. Return of the Living Dead III (I think it's III, I've only watched it once. It's the punk zombie one) where it was surprisingly serious, for example, and I'm pretty sure there have been others, so I don't think 'Twilight rippoff' would be the first thing coming to mind...

It sounds kind of interesting and not really like Twilight beyond superficial things, but the movie is only going to make this worse because from what I've heard they're intentionally going to push the romance-heavy just-like-Twilight angle. I mean it does suck that stuff like that happens - every YA novel gets compared to Harry Potter no matter what, and it gets fucking old. But on the other hand things don't exist in a vacuum either. If you're writing a supernatural creature/human romance right now, chances are when it's released it'll be compared to Twilight even if it's nothing like that.

>zombie hero

>not rotting

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha no

you can't just make a zombie a kawaii desu perfect boyfureindo and not address the fact that he's a zombie and completely take away one of the main things that defines him as a zombie (ie BEING A DEAD BODY THAT WALKS AND SLOWLY ROTS AWAY) and not expect people to at least roll their eyes really really hard at you

I'm gonna read it before judging it. But the premise itself reminds me of something that I really didn't like about Twilight: If it doesn't have anything in common with the monster, don't call it a vampire/zombie. But again, not judging till I read it.

Don't know it but Monster-meets-Girl is an overdone trope which is lamentably common in media. Monster-does-Laundry or Girl-goes-to-Dentist would be more compelling for god's sake.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
When I saw the premise of this book, I thought it was a joke. THEN I found out Smeyer loved it.

Also he should totally be rotting. It would make it better.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
People are more then welcome to read whatever they like, but I can't get past someone falling in love with a dying body. Even vampires weird me out but at least they are not decomposing they are more in suspended animation.

This book just gives me a sick feeling :p

[identity profile] houdini-splicer.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
lol why is he the special snowflake that isn't rotting? I can't.

The movie has Nicholas Hoult. I am automatically there. Haters to the left. (Especially since they delayed Jack the Giant Killer fffuuuu)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
it's up there with Twilight stupidity

and someone ruined Teresa Palmer for me by playing her as this mary-sue-perfect-chan Guinevere :(

rotting corpses should not be found sexy or attractive in any manner. ever

(Anonymous) 2012-01-24 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really see R as a romantic hero but I love this book. And I agree, nothing like Twilight!
