6 » I hate when people use the term "asexual" to describe their sexual orientation. Do you honestly not know what it means? Amoebas and protozoa are asexual. Meaning they have no sexual organs and reproduce by budding or fission.

I hate how people fling around a term like that, and how it's all of a sudden become slang to mean you just don't want to have sex. That's all you have to say. "I don't want to have sex." Stop trying to sound "hip" or whatever the hell you're trying to do by using a scientific term so incorrectly you sound like a complete moronic jackass.

Uh, using "asexual" as an opposite to "bisexual." Opposing prefixes and all that. A word can have multiple meanings, you know, and languages change. The word doesn't have to be purely scientific.

Also, often when you simply tell someone you don't want to have sex their immediate reply is "Are you completely insane?" So most just kind of back away from that.

[identity profile] savant.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand the opposing prefixes and that, but when did using the term start? Why not "nonsexual" instead? Most educated people when they hear the term "asexual" think of invertebrate animals who can't have sex. I just don't comprehend why people would want to be classified in the same category as a microbe.

I don't know; when I realized there was actually a word for it, "asexual" was most used so I stuck with it. I think one of the goals of the greater community is to get the sexuality well-known enough that educated people won't immediately jump to single-celled organisms and the like when they hear the term used to describe people.

I think "asexual" sounds nicer than "nonsexual," me, but that's really just my opinion.

Most educated people realize words can have different meanings in different contexts.

Also, often when you simply tell someone you don't want to have sex their immediate reply is "Are you completely insane?"

Really? Funny, I've never gotten that reply.

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I get a very loud, surprised "WHAT?!" to which I just shrug.

[identity profile] raynala.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Opposing prefixes? Since when was "not" the opposite of "two" ?

Same question here.

"You sound like a complete moronic jackass."

[identity profile] savant.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, big tough anonymous is trying to be clever. Why don't you log in and grow some balls before you tell me I'm a jackass.

[identity profile] kyaa.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, at first when I started hearing that term thrown around I would immediately think of plantlife.

I agree with the secret. I think a lot of fandom types identify as "asexual" simply because they might not have too much experience with sex, or are a late bloomer, maybe.

I don't understand the fact that I've come across self-identified asexuals who've admitted being attracted to another person. Wouldn't that.. prove that they ARE sexual in some way?

tl;dr I know.

[identity profile] kohda.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
There is a difference between sexual orientation and romantic orientation. It's completely normal to have nonsexual attractions or even be in a romantic relationship that doesn't involve sex and still identify as asexual.

I've had nonsexual crushes on other people before, what it means is that I admire them physically and may want to spend more time around them, but have zero desire to act on it. Just like it's possible for a homosexual person to find someone of the opposite gender good looking. You can admire someone without calling into question your orientation.

Of course, those people admitting attraction may be S.A.D (Sexual Aversion Disorder) rather than truly asexual.

(sorry for going on about that, it's a subject that interests me a lot >_>'')

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's just people wanting to be placed in a specific "category", you know... those people who don't want to be left out.

[identity profile] imrihamun.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Fewer people are real asexuals (just like fewer are Aspergersy) in the real world. So you're not interested in the modern, western, hypersexualized culture? Fine. Our [popular] culture puts waaay too much emphasis on it, to which I agree. But you wouldn't be calling yourself asexual outside of our culture. I find it to be a stupid, culture-bound label, often used by people who still do get off, at least somewhat, on smutfic, but don't have real life experience. I haven't seen many people who don't like romance fic, not as much as I've seen that kind, but the same thing - I mean, you don't like a certain, relatively large genre of fic, that's fine, but don't give your presumed sexual preference as a reason.

Besides, defining sexual preference is crap. It implies that it is static. It ain't fuckin' static.
