Well, last Glee secret was a fiasco, but this is surly popcorn worthy, right?

What did she do to him?
(I've never watched Glee, tbh)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She pretty much verbally attacked him nonstop over several days, insulting his manhood, talent, weight, etc. Said some lovely racist things about Rachel while she was at it.

So...if your only reason were "fandom dictates," I would say they can just deal with it. But you yourself being a lesbian who was outed? That, I can't understand. I came out of my own accord, but after the shit that followed with my parents from my own decision, I find anyone taking that decision away from someone else unforgivable. No number of (inaccurate) insults can compare to that, for me. That said, your opinion is yours. I just can't fathom it.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
so bullying someone and calling them fat is worse than outing them to everyone they know?

is this

a joke

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I have honestly no idea about the show, but just reading your comment without context gives me some serious red alerts. I mean you sort of made that sound very universally, unlike OP. And it really depends on situation. I wouldn't say either is worse than the other, both are just very wrong.

And OP really has right to feel compassion to whoever based on their own personal experiences, as long as they don't claim everyone should follow their example... which is exactly the opposite of OP's situation from what I understand.

Except he didn't deliberately out her, he made a comment about what to him was a commonly known subject, not unlike her comment to Kurt before he came out or Brittany's declaration on her show. The chick who overheard could as easily have gotten that information from one of the many public conversations between Santana and Brittany or catching their date at Breadstix not long before.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Your bias is showing.

I'm a Glee fan who loves Santana, but her behaviour cannot be excused.

I stopped watching that show after the first season because it became crystal clear to me that almost every character is a horrible person in one soul-shattering way or another.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty accurate.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)

I agree. Inner turmoil doesn't grant one a license to be an ass. I used to really like Santana and now I think she's just a jerk.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
wow, seriously?

how about no.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, here we go again.

I tend to agree with you. Santana was verbally abusing Finn, and, because there aren't any marks left, a lot of people brush it off. The thing that people tend to forget with Santana, both because of the outing and because she's a main character, making her a default protagonist, is that she IS a bully. She is a bitch and proud of it. She spends a lot of her time putting people down, and, since it's usually either turned towards the Club's antagonists or can be passed off as the kind of 'taking the piss out of each other' that friends do when it's against the other Glee clubbers, the audience lets it slide. But passing off what she was saying as just 'calling him fat...' No, this was after several comments of that nature, insulting his girlfriend, his friends, nailing Rory in the face with a dodgeball and laughing about it, and delivering all of this as an apology for her behavior.

Finn outing her wasn't intentional on his part, and he doesn't even say it much louder than Brittany said "If having sex meant you were dating, then Santana and I would be dating' back in Season 1. This time, someone turns it into a weapon against Sue (an act that, if Santana hadn't turned eighteen yet, would be illegal, I might add). It's not as if Finn knew that would happen. I don't think he did the right thing, but you push even the most mild-mannered people hard enough, yeah, they're going to push back. And Santana's feelings for Brittany are her weak spot, which is why he called her a coward for masking her insecurities by making fun of others. When he was speaking, outing her was incidental.

I don't give him a free pass because he was being abused by Santana. But I don't give her a free pass just because the fallout wound up hurting her more.

Uh, no. Kurt had more of a reason to out Karofsky than Finn did with Santana, but Kurt didn't do it, because outing someone is a shitty thing to do.

Santana is more popular in fandom than Finn is, so Finn tends to get shit on alot in Glee fandom.

[identity profile] so-wicked.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Finn outing her didn't piss me off nearly as much as making him the hero in her "coming out" episode did. Now that was the biggest bullshit I've ever seen. But I digress.

i'm going to preface this by saying that although i've gathered the general gist of this particular clusterfuck, i don't actually watch glee anymore so my opinion isn't completely informed but

w o w

as another lesbian who was outed against my will can i just say that although it's within your rights to not be mad, you don't get to speak for everyone else, and it's perfectly valid for people to be very angry with finn/how the story was handled? this is a sensitive topic which hits very close to home to a lot of people and it's natural that there were really strong emotional reactions from fans. no one is out there with pitchforks trying to make you repent from liking finn or waterboard you until you like santana. sometimes in fandom you'll have an unpopular opinion. that's ok. people are just angry, for totally understandable reasons, and they are completely within their rights to be.

from what i've seen of the discussion of this plotline, though, no one is trying to say that what santana did was ~~okay~~. they're just saying that what finn did was worse. verbal bullying is a really horrible thing, i'm not denying that, but it doesn't even compare to outing someone without their consent. outing someone is taking away their agency and putting them in a position where their entire life can change, and they are incapable of stopping it. they can be cut off from family members or friends. they can be kicked out of their home. they can be targeted for violence. mean words and a slap don't compare, they just don't.

and let's not forget that finn is in a position of much higher social privilege than santana. he is a straight white guy. she is a queer woman of colour. that fact alone puts their situations on different levels.

I agree. They said everyone in the school already knew about Santana's orientation and it's not like Finn meant to out her to the rest of the world. That was an accident.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom has always been way too forgiving toward Santana while villainizing other characters. It's really gross.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-20 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this secret 110%. I have no idea what it'd be like to be outed, but I have absolutely no sympathy for Santana just because I think she's a terrible person. (Which is not to say that terrible people don't deserve sympathy, just that I personally don't feel sympathetic towards her.) She insulted everything about Finn, hit Rory in the face, and used a bunch of racist slurs towards Rachel; by contrast, Finn said one thing spur-of-the-moment, not really all that loudly, and by his own admission it's something he thought everyone in the school already knew. If you asked Finn whether he wanted to out Santana, he would tell you that of course he did not: first because outing someone is bad, but more importantly because as far as he knew, Santana was as good as out, to everyone in the school: Brittany outed her half a season ago on her show, and Santana and Brit were terrible at keeping their relationship secret. So... as far as I'm concerned, what Finn did was not particularly sensitive or smart, but Finn has never been particularly sensitive or smart, so it seemed to just be a very in-character action born from extreme provocation that happened to fall in the wrong ears at the wrong time?

And for the record, since we're talking about the snooping involved in a vicious political campaign, they would have found out Santana was gay from any number of the other sources I mentioned above anyway with quite a lot of ease. In fact I'd say it's more probable than finding out by overhearing it in a hallway, which was just... unfortunate.
