So, I just recently started watching Supernatural out of morbid curiosity thanks to you guys. Why didn't I do this before? It is nearly everything I've ever wanted in a show (paranormal stuff! classic rock! classic car! road-trip format!)

I avoided Supernatural for years because I assumed it was just another cheesy horror knock-off with a pretty cast. I was totally amazed with how good it was when I actually started watching and sad that I didn't get over myself and start watching sooner.

So did I and it's actually pretty fun if you don't take it super seriously.

The exact same thing happened to me.

This applies to me too. I wrote it off as a silly show about two tough guys chasing skirt and being cheesy macho posers with their guns and their car. My friend made me watch it by constantly telling me how good it was. The time I mainlines through five seasons of it was one of the best TV experiences of my entire life. I wished I have a mind wipe device I could use to erase it from my brain and watch it all again.

You say that now, but just wait until season 5. If you aren't scared off, season 6 will do that for you. Seasons 1 - 2 are the show's prime.

Season 5 is actually my favorite... I love it's main story arc quite a bit. But six is absolutely AWFUL.

season 5 had a lot of really good scenes

I really disliked 5-6 but I think 7's pretty enjoyable so far. 1-2 were much better, tho.

S2 is my favorite overall but my fave ep ever is in S5.

I mean it had high points (Skin, Faith, my secret love The Benders) but in my opinion it wasn't until Devil's Trap that the show really started to hit its stride
season 2 is FANTASTIC though :D

Yeah, Sam had to get on board with The Facts Of Life Is We Need To Stop Big Bads From Eating Everyone before he really grew on me honestly. Once The writers hit their stride with the characters all kinds of awesome started happening IMO. ^_^

OH MY GOD YES. I love Sam now but fuck did he bug me in the first season. I am so easily annoyed by I Just Want To Be Normal~~type characters, especially when the alternative they have available to them is TO BE AWESOME INSTEAD. I was just like "YOU ARE IN THE WRONG SHOW FOR NORMAL, MAN, GOD"

but in season 2 he so completely grew on me. <3

Weird, I never took it that way. I always thought "normal" meant "control over my life." Especially, when it was clear Dean was just pretending to be happy about hunting.

Ah yes, the poor reluctant hero who never asked for any of this and goes swimming in da Nile for a while before pulling their head out of their butt and stepping up to the plate AND THEN being awesome.

Other examples off the top of my head being Marco from Animorphs, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has moments herself, Harry Potter himself to certain extents, pretty much at least one person per each action/end of the world movie actually containing a plot to go with the guns/explosions/etc, several X:Men verse characters, Simon and Wash from Firefly both have moment IMO even if they're not in the usual Big Damn Heroes line up...the list goes on indefinitely.

I'd say Han Solo, but do to the recent mixed reaction to him around here... -_^ -_^

Come on, Season 6 wasn't that bad. Granted, it was probably my least favourite, but none of the seasons stand out as all-round brilliant (to me, anyway). They each had their own moments, & I think "The French Mistake" was one of S6's.

Agreed that Seasons 1-2 are the show at its simplest, though. Sam and Dean can never go back to that now.

yeah same, i just got into it like a month ago. it's a great show even if it's cheesy.

I got into Supernatural because of F!S too. The fandom may be crazy, but the show is amazing.

See, I did pretty much the opposite- missed the original boat due to going through a few years of not watching much television and then when I did start seeing things about it, it was mostly fan wank/crazy/hate here and on other places online. Since mainly all I had to go on about Supernatural at all was a bunch of ship hate/other nonsense, I stayed very far away until my fiancé (who ranks this as one of his favorite current shows) introduced me to it midway through last year... and I couldn't figure out how to tell him that I didn't want to watch this show because of a bunch of Internet fans.

Silly me for judging a show by it's fandom, because boy was I wrong. I'm about half way through season four (but am not spoilerphobic because it's my own choice to be seasons behind), and I've really enjoy the comedy/Dean's big brother-ness/the side characters so far. ^_^

However I am learning to accept that if I ever really like a character not played by the two main actors, they are 100% more likely to either die (not the kind ~~Sam or Dean~~ people come back from) or are only around to be awesome for one episode and are never seen/mentioned again.

The wank I saw around the Internet was part of the reason I avoided it, too. I feel kind of silly for avoiding it because of the fans now (especially since there are a ton of really kick ass people in the fandom - you just obviously don't hear about them where wank is concerned). Glad I got over it, though, because it's one of my favorite shows of all time.

Season 4 is my absolute favorite season! They did an awesome job with the season long arc in that one and a lot of the episodes were great on their own.

I feel your pain, man. I keep telling myself I'm just going to put a moratorium on liking new characters on the off chance that maybe if I don't (or if I don't admit it aloud) they won't die/disappear. It hasn't been working so far.

Agreed! Enough fans of other fandoms I knew already were really what sold me on getting into the show initially when I caved actually.

Conversation I almost had with my guy: "If fandom friend A, B and C love this show so much, I'm willing to give it a shot, honey. Oh! I also trust your opinion of course! God this is came out awkwardly....Have I told you I loved you lately?" lol

I know, right?! I mean, Ash was the awesome anti-prototype character and then WHAM! Blown up. I wanted more of John, so nope, he's gone. Thought it would be cool to see this major show down between Dean/Bela (I have a thing so bitchy, smart bad girls that foil the good guy), so of course she dies off screen evidently because other fans didnt like her character taking away from Dean/Sam screen time. I'm dreading getting to the Jo and Ellen bits because I love both of them and the season six episode I caught on tv this week totally has me shipping Bobby/Ellen as these kickass/seen it all pseudo parents. -_-

I hear ya! Though I got into it on a combination of hearing about it all the time in one of the HP communities I'm a part of, and then watching the last three episodes of season three on tv around Halloween two years ago. I didn't know what was going on to get the boys there, but it got me interested enough that I went out and bought the first season and ZOOMED through it in less than three days. /hooked
