Yeah, but it's pretty clear that is name is Ed. It's like the American kids who insist on calling Light Raito, or... I can't think of any more english names in manga, but you get what I mean.

Yep, but I'd say those people are just doing it for the sake of humor. :P I call Light Raito as well.

I wonder if there are Japanese people who are like, all obsessed with American cartoons, and get pissed when people say Maiku and Sutaacy and stuff.

Actually, a lot of the Raito use stems from the people who were simply used to the name. Since somewhere around the majority if the scanlated chapters I read use Raito, instead of Light, it simply stuck for me. A lot of the people I've spoken with about it share the same opinion - read a name spelled one way often enough, and the real spelling will just look too weird.

Light does look stupid, but it's his name. If I'm actually paying attention to what I'm talking about, I usually try to correct myself, simply because I want the newer fans to understand.

But seriously, not all of us are OMGJ-ENGLISH ELITISTS. =3 (Though, the Edo thing really doesn't make sense to me unless you only saw raws, because every translation in that case was correct, as opposed to the majority of the fan translations being incorrect with Death Note)

Just how long was Raito used? I came into the fandom late and didn't follow scanlations, but I heard it went on all the way through volume 6? If that's the case, I find that a bit odd since his name was already spelled in English in volume 2 of the Japanese tankoubon. Did literally no one on the scanlation teams (or the fandom in general) bother to buy the tankoubon and correct the mistake? There are always people who buy the tankoubon even if they don't know Japanese, so that just seems kind of weird.

The group I was with, WtF, caught a lot of crap for changing it at all, actually. At least one other group continued to use Raito, well into the later chapters.

For that matter, we weren't scanlating from the tankoubons, why would you think that? The chapters came out much quicker in the Jump magazine, so we had a HQ version that we put out with the tank scans, and the normal LQ version that was put out quickly with the Jump scans as they came out.

I wouldn't be particularly surprised if the Jump scans were up to the equivalent of Volume 6 when the actual tank of volume 2 came out, but I don't remember any of that off the top of my head. I know they were quite far behind.

No, I'm aware that most scanlation groups do it from the weekly chapters. But Jump tankoubon are released very quickly, every 2-3 months, so Jump is generally only about a dozen or so chapters ahead. Volume 2 came out in July 2004, meaning Jump chapters were around the first half of volume 4. There's no way it should have continued through volume 6; If the other groups did, that means they're partially responsible for the "But I'm used to Raito!" wank.

YES! That's me exactly, and I always get crap for accidentally saying Raito. I was raised that way. (I read up until a certain point in death note and then got bored.) If I was able to think of it first, I would say Light, but I just say what pops in my head first, really.
