Light does look stupid, but it's his name. If I'm actually paying attention to what I'm talking about, I usually try to correct myself, simply because I want the newer fans to understand.
But seriously, not all of us are OMGJ-ENGLISH ELITISTS. =3 (Though, the Edo thing really doesn't make sense to me unless you only saw raws, because every translation in that case was correct, as opposed to the majority of the fan translations being incorrect with Death Note)

For that matter, we weren't scanlating from the tankoubons, why would you think that? The chapters came out much quicker in the Jump magazine, so we had a HQ version that we put out with the tank scans, and the normal LQ version that was put out quickly with the Jump scans as they came out.
I wouldn't be particularly surprised if the Jump scans were up to the equivalent of Volume 6 when the actual tank of volume 2 came out, but I don't remember any of that off the top of my head. I know they were quite far behind.

But yeah, I see how it would. I've never had a problem with people using 'Raito'...those people tend to be the ones who read the scanslations first.
But they use Ed in the English manga and TV series. =) I'd have thought it would seem obvious, what with all the other very English names. =)
Also, I find the people who go 'OMG EDO-KUNNNN <333' don't you Arufonsu, or similar. =/

Ed does sound better than the Japanese pronunciation, mostly because it reminds me of the old name of Tokyo. xD

THIS is what it boils down to, I think. Yes, the romanization of the Japanese word is going to come out "Edowaado", any Japanese person saying it will say "Edo/waado"....but what people fail to take into account is the Japanese accent, and the fact that FMA is not set in Japan, or in an alternate-universe type of Japan. IIRC, and it has been a while since I watched the series/read the manga, Xing correlates to modern-day Asia, specifically China.
Which is also why, at the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, I refuse to acknowledge "May Chang" as correct. WTF WAS WRONG WITH MEI, VIZ?!And if I'm right, Xing is the "Eastern" countries, making Amestria (...I am not even sure that's wtf the country is called. Shit.) the "Western" side. It would make 100 times more sense for a character who displays no Asiatic traits in a Western country to be properly referred to as Edward, not Edowaado. Final point: Please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the names of almost all of the FMA cast written in Katakana? Mind you, it's been a while since I last studied written Japanese, but I thought Katakana was used for literal pronunciations and borrowed words, as well as to write out a non-native person's name. Assuming that's the case (and please correct me if I'm wrong), it's another point in favor of Edward over Edowaado.In the end, I don't particularly care if someone calls him Ed or Edo or MonkeyChickenShortBeansproutOfSweetJoyousDeath. I have my stance, you have yours, and nothing I really say or do will change your mind. It annoys me to a slight degree, but I figure I do thing to annoy people as well, and you can't please 'em all.

It's hard to argue back with your points since I agree with them. ^^; Not being a member of the FMA fandom, I think I';d put down the 'Edo' thing as bothering me to a personal tick. It tends to be fanbrats who're trying to be clever who do it...which is always incredibly annoying.
I couldn't tell you the place names I'm afraid, but Amestria (?) does indeed seem more Western, the clothing and the names atleast
the area itself looks like a desert half the time..You're about right about katakana. In the katakana alphabet there is no stand-alone 'd', making 'Edo' the standard compromise.
I don't have to deal with it so often though, not being in the fandom and all. ^^; That and things like doujin scanslations always use Ed in my experience.
