You do realize that your 1st and 2nd paragraphs are kind of incompatible, right? "It's okay if you don't like it...unless you don't like it for these reasons!"

And, I haven't seen it yet, but rest assured when I do, whether or not you liked and why will have no bearing on my opinion...as mine should have no bearing on yours.

Teal Deer: Calm down.

I've seen the movie, I liked it, but I have to admit that "too slow/too boring/WTF even happened?" are all valid criticisms.

When you go see a spy movie you expect a certain level of excitement but TTSS was so subtle and underplayed that things don't feel as important as they should. For example, I didn't understand Peter could get in SERIOUS trouble for taking that log book until he flipped out at Tarr. I thought he just didn't want the guys to catch on, I didn't realize he would go to jail.

Uh, you do realize you just spoiled some of the movie for someone who hasn't seen it yet...

I like that it was subtle and underplayed. It's why Tinker Tailor was so popular when it came out, because it provided a more 'realistic' spy option to the wish fulfillment fantasy of James Bond. When you watch it, it's almost like the director is letting you see everything absolutely objectively, allowing you to put the pieces together yourself.

No worries. I'm sure I won't see it for a long while, and when I realized where the comment was going, I skipped over the rest. I'm sure by the time I see it, if I DO remember what was being done (something about a stolen logbook?) I won't remember the names attached to the actions. Like now, I only remember Tarr and...something with a P (and maybe a T?) and only think I remember which one was doing the stealing(?). So I'm good. Thanks though. :)

You're welcome! I was just a bit annoyed that you could clarify that you hadn't seen it, and then someone would go on to say for example in a comment that you couldn't miss seeing. :(

...But definitely not annoyed enough to employ any bathtub fantasies. :)

Oh man, whenever you DO get around to it, I hope you enjoy it so much.

Meh, it's been out for 6 months and it's a relatively straightforward scene. It's not like I told them how Christopher Eccleston pops up at the last second with a Russian accent. Wait, oops.

As I said, I like it, but I do see why this story works best as a novel. There's a lot going on inside the characters but they're all hiding what they think & feel which makes it hard to become emotional attached to anyone. Which is possibly why so many people seem to have latched onto that one guy in that one scene about that one other guy. The book is on my To Read List then I want to watch the movie again. I think I'll get a lot more out of it that way.

Now that was rude, and I hope facetious. Somehow I doubt it, though.

Not if you're in the USA, Japan, China, Mexico, Argentina, or half of Europe. I had some serious problems finding a theater that was playing it near me, and I didn't want to pirate it. It's generally respectful not to spoil people who have specifically mentioned that they want to see something and just haven't yet. I still don't spoil things that have been out for millennia if I can help it, because I want the people I'm recommending it to to have their own personal reactions to the piece.

Actually I thought the movie did a really good job of distinguishing Esterhase from Bland from Control from Hayden from Alleline from Tarr. The only character I had trouble distinguishing was [SPOILERS] Prideaux, and that was because for a while I thought he'd died.

Is it not the same plot and details as the movie made 33 years ago? Based on a book written before that?

Sup, OP here. Here's what I meant by those paragraphs:

1: these are the reasons I've seen given for why TTSS sucks.
2: it would be totally okay if these were reasons for Your Opinion As A Person rather than WHY ABSOLUTELY NO ONE EVER CAN LIKE THIS FILM, AND CLEARLY EVERYONE WHO SAYS THEY DO IS LYING
3: I get angry about people telling me what I "really think" or why I "think I like" something.

tl;dr totally fine to not like it. not everyone's cup of tea. my problem is people BEING A DICK TO ME because I DO.

my problem is people BEING A DICK TO ME

Then again, you're the one who fantasizes about them in tubs...

JESUS CHRIST! I am never going to live down that reference!

Okay, replace "entrails" with "cold tomato soup". It has fuck all with the movie but if you're going to be that fucking literal, that's closer to The Actual Feels I Possess
