I wonder how many people who are ostensibly inspired to become a virologist, doctor, Japanese translator, FBI agent, etc., because of fandom actually get any further than an entry-level college course before getting distracted by some other shiny new fandom.

To be fair, this is an older book in an older fandom. Depending on when OP read it, they're probably in for the long haul.

there's a secret like this every day, though. I would be stunned if any of these people followed through.

OP-

Well, I've already completed the entry-level college courses, and I really enjoyed them, and I'm currently on the track for microbiology, so AFAIK I'm going to continue it. If I change, though, it's not going to be for a new fandom. This story has been a part of my life since I was ~9, so it's had time to sink in, and take hold.

hey, that's awesome. you're the exception that proves the rule. good luck with microbiology - it's fun as hell.

Thank you! I am going to do my best, and yeah, I is fun as hell. :D

it's cool either way, though-- even if they don't stick to that particular field, they've learned something new and also know a bit more about themselves.
In my situation, I was obsessed with anime in high school, chose my university based on its Japanese program, took my Japanese degree and became an English teacher in Japan... by that time I wasn't really interested in anime beyond occasionally reading manga on the train... and now I teach ESL in America. One could say, without stretching too much, that without anime I wouldn't be where I am today.

Fandom, far more heavily then I would like to admit, influenced my decision to become a cop.

Guess who just had her induction to training today?

Also inspired to join MI5 because of GitS and Darker Than Black, and got far enough through the application process that even anonymously behind a good proxy I won't go into details.

Like there's lots of things I really love about the jobs themselves, but to pretend that fandom obsessions had no say in the choice would be dishonest of me. They sparked the interest as it were.

Not OP:

The book that called me to my particular chosen profession I wouldn't say is "fandom" (since it's a fairly obscure novel with no fandom to speak of), but I read it when I was twelve and it's been ten years now and I'm on track for my chosen career.

However, I was always interested in other aspects of said career prior to reading the book, the book just introduced me to a whole world of other options that I had not previously considered, so maybe it's different.
