I approve

Best reason to become a virologist that I can think of.

(...well... aside from maybe helping discover cures for serious deadly diseases, I guess)

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder how many people who are ostensibly inspired to become a virologist, doctor, Japanese translator, FBI agent, etc., because of fandom actually get any further than an entry-level college course before getting distracted by some other shiny new fandom.

[identity profile] dark-puck.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, this is an older book in an older fandom. Depending on when OP read it, they're probably in for the long haul.

I first got interested in my current healthcare career thanks to a kink meme story. I love that I finally found my true calling in life. No shame!

[identity profile] dark-kaomi.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with it. This book was a great description of what a contagious, fast acting virus can do. If it left a strong enough impression that you feel the need to fight against that kind of devastation then the author did a great job. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

This is one of my favorite book series yet my least favorite book of the series. Not sure why.

CIRCLE SECRET

FUCK YEAH

ROCK ON WITH YOUR BAD SELF, OP

And it is a great reason to become a virologist.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
don't feel too bad

video games are why i got into journalism, but nobody believes me when i say that

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever inspires you, there's no bad. Something inspired a desire to learn and go forth and fostered a love for a specific career - it shouldn't matter where that inspiration came from.

[identity profile] cysfics.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, that is an awesome inspiration!

Don't worry, anon. I used to want to be a physicist because of Macguyver.

... then I realized physics is mostly lots and lots and lots of fancy math and I got over it.

But that doesn't mean it's wrong to want to be something based on a fandom!

Hey. Boston Legal got me interested in the law. Taking the LSAT this summer, and while I know I'm no Denny Crane (I don't plan to work in courtrooms for one thing, but in legal research), it was the idea of it presented in such an accessible way that caught my attention and got me interested. So it happens. And it's pretty cool!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds silly but it's from stuff like this that people derive the interests that drive them through their lives. I think you're awesome that you've found something you're passionate about. :)

[identity profile] nakki.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Fantastic! I'm a rocket science because of Stargate SG1 (my first satellite launches this year) so I'm all for fandoms influencing people to become awesome =D

that's pretty awesome. I hope virology kicks ass!

As someone who also has a career-spiration from Tammy Pierce books, I totally approve.

Also, that is fave Emelan book.

Long haul course wise (my course back on to microbiology from time to time), but I wish you the best of luck!

I think most people are somehow inspired by something to do what they do in life. Is there like a point system for sources of inspiration that I'm not aware of? Where "following in a parent's foorsteps" is like 80 and "an inspiring book" is what, 20? Can a book be 50 if it's a classic? I don't get it. Inspiration is inspiration, and it's a personal experience.

I study history, and it's not uncommon at all for people here to say they watched Indiana Jones movies a lot growing up. Another common stated source of inspiration is the Civilization game series. :D

[identity profile] xaritomene.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm mainly here (LATE, GDI) to say I absolutely ADORE the Winding Circle books, and Briar was always my favourite, so I think it might be the awesomest reason ever. (Beyond, as other have said, wanting to fight against diseases like that 'un (without the magic).)

But, y'know, I'm doing EngLit at university right now because of fandom - because reading was the best thing ever as a kid, and fandom was what got me really interacting with the things I read, rather than passively reading. And I'm hoping to translate the skills I learnt on this course into a law conversion course in a year or so's time. I'd say that fandom is a great motivator. ^_^

OP is not me, but I know what OP is talking about. I've based my career around my love of history. I'm not a historian. I want to work in the same field as the people I read about.

I'm so damn close to getting what I want, I can't stand it...

Go for it, OP.

[identity profile] dragonimp.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Slightly off topic but WOW that cover is a lot creepier than the copy I have O_o. I thought it was some zombie apocalypse story until I saw the title.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
A book made me decide my life's calling. I don't think that's so strange.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
I chose to study genetics at uni solely because of Charles Xavier. I'm in a job I love and credit the X-Men for that every day. :)

[identity profile] barren-spite.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Briar is the reason I started thinking plants were cool. :>

Also, I am currently taking an Epidemiology course in University and it is so fascinating. Today we spent an hour and a half discussing schistosomiasis and Dracunculiasis (Guinea Worm) and there were a few collective shudders. But still, fascinating stuff!

Sidenote: that book series was so fantastic!
