Why? I'd think Sansa/Gregor would be worse, or Sansa/Joffrey. (Unless you're referring to the actual portmanteau itself...)

Because I enjoy the use of hyperbole.

But also because neither of those two ships that you mentioned are actually a thing in fandom.

Sansa/Sandor is pretty hugely popular, so I have to see it all over the place when I'm looking for fic and am reminded of how much I dislike this pairing every time I see a fic featuring them. Like, their popularity baffles me and the way they are romanticized... IDK. i just don't get how anyone can like Sansa and want her to end up with Sandor. She's been through enough already. Can we not saddle her with a manchild who is aggressive and ~15 years her senior?

Correction, I think it is the most popular ASoIaF ship period. :P

As for it being so popular, I think people enjoy the drama of it and how rewarding it would be because of it if Sandor softened up and hooked up with Sansa. Not saying that the ship is healthy or non-creepy, but most fantoms I've known have always preferred the sick bad boy ship over any nice and safe option. Probably because they see "nice, safe and healthy" as boring.

I meant to write "fandoms".

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Like, I like the "bad boy" ship sometimes. (I ship Spike/Buffy and Kate/Sawyer). BUT LIKE. SANSA IS A KID. She has zero power in that relationship. With Buffy, she and Spike were at least on fairly equal footing when it came to a fight. Sansa is just... she doesn't have that.

[identity profile] hinodeh.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I don't disagree. I don't really know what the current SanSan fandom and fanfic trends are, so I dunno how they deal with this if they deal with it at all. I mean, I'm part of the lj comm, but I mostly read the reactions to the HBO series and discussions. I do know that there are fics which age Sansa up, make her a capable player of the game and have her reunite with Sandor, but I dunno their percentage and don't know the handling of common handling of the fics which don't do that.

So you ship a guy with a girl he tried to rape but Sansan turns you off?

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Do you really want to get into the specifics of the differences in the dynamics of those two relationships? Because they ARE very different. And, I don't pretend that Spike/Buffy is anything other than an incredibly fucked up relationship in season 6. And I'm sure there are SanSan fans out there who would admit that SanSan is fucked up. So maybe it's just the SanSan fans that I've come across, but most of them seem to romanticize the relationship (just like some Spike/Buffy shippers do, I'm sure). THAT is what really gets me about the pairing. That and the fact that it is everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll tell you how it's different.

Sandor didn't rape Sansa.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
He thought about though before just intimidating her into singing for him!

Also, although Spike tried to rape Buffy (which I am NOT excusing btw), he didn't succeed. Their relationship was mutually abusive, and Buffy used Spike for sex throughout season 6. That doesn't make him trying to rape her ok. BUT their relationship was fucked up all around. They were both awful to each other in season 6 and I don't pretend otherwise.

Buffy could take Spike in a fight and was not in a position where she was under his power- ever. Buffy was calling the shots in that relationship throughout season 6.

By contrast, Sansa is really still just a kid who is a prisoner and Sandor is one of her jailers. She has NO power. There's no way she could hope to physically overwhelm Sandor if push came to shove and she is obviously scared and intimidated by him. She has no political power either. She has no friend or allies and Sandor is essentially the one person who isn't actively hurting her. She can't afford to reject him if she wanted to. Sandor has the power to make her life hell if he wanted to because she rejected him or whatever. I'm not saying that he would but the man IS pretty emotionally unstable. The difference in power dynamics is what squicks me about Sansa/Sandor along with Sansa's emotional immaturity.

If you ship it, whatever. I think it's gross, but go ahead. And at least admit that it is fucked up. I like Spike/Buffy, but I don't pretend that their relationship is romantic and healthy.

What little power Sandor had he used to help Sansa; I.E. covering for her when she told Joffrey not kill Dontos.

As for being afraid of rejecting him, Sansa had no problem telling Sandor to his face what she thought of him (as opposed to being all courtesies with Joffrey). Sansa's opinion of Sandor was that, as harsh as he might have been to her, he wouldn't let any harm come to her. She was afraid of him but not to the extent that she was worried of him making her life hell or abusing his power over here.

Because Sansa/Gregor and Sansa/Joffrey.aren't chuck full of "abuse is ok and means he loves you and the power of love will change him into a fluffy bunny and the age difference isn't creepy at all."

Also, there's more San/San, which exponentially increases it's annoyance and creepy factor.
