Because the OP might hate it

Yeah, sometimes when I write prompts, I find myself wanting to say, "And could you please not include ____", but it feels kinda rude, ya know...? So I either have to be rude, or take the chance that someone's going to include something I don't like when they fill the prompt.

Exactly. Sometimes people go: 'I might fill it, but would you mind if I...' and people always go 'yes, of course that would be great'. I wonder how many people actually mean that.

Of course, sometimes it's ok and it's something minor. But I imagine most people don't want their prompt set in a specific AU the author's a fan of or filled with OCs they might not know.

I've always asked - politely - not to include people I don't especially want to see having sex in "anyone" prompts - for example, in Star Trex XI RPF I don't really want Eric Bana, too many associations with his early comedy persona for me, so I'll politely say "any slash pairing but please don't include Eric" or something like that. I've never heard it was rude.

I've not heard it's rude, it just seems like it would be. Esp since, in many cases, I know the characters I don't like are really popular. For example, I can't stand Moriarty, but most of Sherlock fandom seems to love him.

I don't think it's rude. The whole point of writing a prompt is that you're hoping someone will respond with a fic you'll enjoy, and there are things you don't enjoy. (I'm not thrilled with Moriarty either, btw.) So it's better to be up front about what you'd rather not have than to try to be polite to someone who filled your prompt with a story that makes you want to curl up in a corner and die.

Yeah, you're got a good point. And you can be polite about it... "I'd love to see [prompt]. Please don't include [x character(s)], thanks."
Cool. (-:
